Chapter 98: Kind Eyes (Ch.98)

Kristen’s eyes fluttered open to a comforting warmth spreading through him, sourcing from the palm rested against his forehead.

As the last dregs of unconsciousness faded off of him, he felt his surrounding spin for a moment before it settled and he could finally see clearly.

The first thing Kristen took notice off was the presence standing at his side, hands rested on his forehead and the quiet hum of magic all around him.

Sparks spread all across Kristen’s form, right from that point of contact and Kristen shivered visibly whilst his heart constricted in elation and excitement.

’He’s here... it’s him...’ Kristen thought as he stared up into a pair of enchanting violet orbs, his heart skipping multiple beats at a time.

’Mine!’ Kristen exclaimed within his heart, however just as he opened his lips to declare the same, he felt a strange weight on his tongue and found he could not form even a single word.

His tongue felt as heavy as lead, sunk down to the bottom of mouth and it also felt strangely swollen and sore,

Try as Kristen might, he could not lift his tongue up or even form a single sound.

’What is this? What is happening to me? Why can’t I speak?’ Kristen panicked as he struggled to force even a little sound from his lips, all to no avail.

Instead Kristen felt a searing pain spread throughout his body and he jerked slightly at the sudden pain that felt as though his muscles were being burnt from within.

"Awake?" A familiar voice asked and Kristen lifted his gaze to meet those enchanting violet orbs staring down at him, a grim expression on his face.

A pained groan escaped Kristen’s lips in response and Kristen curled to the side, panting for breath as the searing pain ravaged through him.

"Easy now... Zariah’s magic is working, I will do what I can also, the pain should fade away in a moment." Nile assured in a quiet tone as he trailed his free hand through Kristen’s hair in a gesture to comfort.

Kristen felt himself calm and he nodded slowly, his eyes fluttering closed as he gritted his teeth against the pain.

Kristen was not certain what exactly was happening to him or why he was going through such pain,

However if there was one thing Kristen was certain of, it was the fact that he was in safe hands,

Even if those safe hands had been claws wrapped around his throat and choking him last time he came to, Kristen still knew within his heart that he has never been safer all his life than he was now.

It took a moment of quietly enduring the pain, but soon enough, Kristen felt the warmth of magic take effect from within him, spreading out through his entire body and banishing the pain.

Kristen heaved a sigh of relief, his relief quickly converting to panic when the warmth on his forehead disappeared as Nile withdrew his hand.

Kristen’s hand quickly shot out to grasp Nile’s wrist, watching as those enchanting violet orbs lifted to settle on him, a warning look in them.

"It seems you still have quite the strength in you, I could send you right back to sleep if you plan to bother me with questions."

"I would be doing you a favor too, believe me when I say you don’t want to be conscious when the next episode of the poison’s effect hits anyways, there’s only so much Zariah’s magic trace can do for you." Nile murmured,

Kristen quickly shook his head in refusal, he was not certain how to explain what he wanted to say and so he tugged on Nile’s hand insistently.

Kristen watched Nile’s brows furrow in confusion as he took a step closer to Kristen.

Kristen lifted Nile’s hand to place it over his lips, Nile’s eyes then widened in understanding.

"You can’t speak?!" Nile asked in concern, Kristen quickly nodded in agreement.

"By the elements! This is getting really bad. The flame poison has begun affecting your senses, but it’s only been five days! Your situation is deteriorating much faster than we anticipated!" Nile noted in a tone of deep concern as his palm once again rested over Kristen’s forehead.

And for a moment, the warmth of Nile’s magic flowed through Kristen before Nile retrieved his hand once again, heaving a frustrated sigh.

"I’m sorry, my abilities are limited when it comes to the flame poison, I cannot reverse the effects till the antidote is administered." Nile apologized,

Nile’s words warmed Kristen’s heart as Kristen saw the side of the spirit guide he was accustomed to,

Although Kristen admitted that terrifyingly ferocious side of the spirit guide was extremely alluring too.

"Why do you have that creepy smile on your face? Don’t be getting ahead of yourself and feeling satisfied that I worry for you...I would truly have killed you if Zariah had replied just a moment later." Nile stated out of the blue as though he could read Kristen’s thoughts.

"I am spirit guide, I can actually read your thoughts should I wish to... but no, your expression is doing all the telling right now." Nile said, once again guessing Kristen’s thoughts right.

Kristen was momentarily astonished, he had known the Spirit guide of Crimson Moon possesed unimaginable abilities, but to think he could actually read minds at will and even the minds of other races apart from his.

Kristen then recalled Nile’s words about killing him and he released a quiet scoff,

For some reason, Kristen was confident Nile would not have harmed him even if he did not recognize him to be his mate, Kristen could see the compassion and kindness in the eyes of the spirit guide.

It was said ’the eyes were the windows to the soul.’

Kristen had always believed the eyes of a person betrayed their true personalities, no matter how deeply hidden it was.

It was precisely why Kristen had known Lady Zariah was not as cold as she misled everyone to believe she was but instead was consciously concealing her true compassionate and easy going nature.

It was for the very same reason Kristen did not doubt that mate or not, Nile would not have harmed him.

"You are probably convincing yourself right now that I would not have hurt you..." Nile called out Kristen’s thoughts with perfect accuracy again.

Kristen shook his head slowly, forcing a neutral expression on his face with much difficulty to prevent Nile from predicting his thoughts.

Much to Kristen’s delight, the lips of the spirit guide twitched slightly before he laughed quietly.

Kristen swore for a moment, he felt his heart stop beating at the sound of Nile’s laughter.

"Changing your expression won’t keep me from knowing what you are thinking merman... besides, you are not wrong. I would not have killed you." Nile murmured with a casual shrug as he headed back to take a seat, leaning against the wall of the cave.

Kristen’s gaze trailed the spirit guide, watching as his eyes fluttered close for a moment, the hum of magic echoing all around him.

Kristen’s gaze trailed the calm and tranquil expression that settled over the spirit guide and his heart thumped so loud, he could hear it audibly.

’By the tides! He is beautiful!’ Kristen thought in awe, as he watched the red tips of Nile’s hair brush against his neck.

Kristen could not wait for when he would be able to run his hands through those lush tresses or feel them grazing over his scales.

Kristen knew it was probably wrong of him to be salivating over his mate’s perfection when his mate had not even realized their bond yet, but Kristen could not help himself.

"You must be wondering what exactly happened that we find ourselves out here..." Nile said after a short moment, his words drawing Kristen out of his obsessing.

Kristen nodded, sitting up from where he lay and stepping down from the rock slab, he headed towards Nile and took a seat beside him.

To Kristen’s relief, Nile did not object to him sitting so close to him.

"Do you remember anything?" Nile asked, turning his gaze to Kristen.

Kristen was quiet for a moment, thinking long and hard, but all the memories that came to his mind were blurry and unclear.

The last thing Kristen remembered clearly was meeting Lady Zariah and Nile in the Coral Guest Palace, after which, everything else was a mess.

Kristen shook his head slowly, wincing guiltily when Nile released a low growl.

Kristen suspected his memory played a very significant part in why they were out here.

"Just perfect...there goes the only proof of Zariah’s innocence." Nile murmured, his eyes fluttering closed as he clearly tried to calm himself.

Kristen frowned in confusion, his heart aching to see Nile’s displeasure.

He inched his hand towards Nile slowly and apprehensively, he grasped the edge of his robe and tugged on it slightly.

Nile glanced up at Kristen with a raised brow.

’Tell me what happened.’ Kristen thought, hoping Nile could once again read his expression accurately.

"Well five days ago, you were attacked and afterwards, your Sea Kingdom accused Zariah of poisoning you..." Nile began in a tone of distaste.

Kristen’s eyes widened slightly as he shook his head in disbelief.

Kristen wondered how exactly his uncle had come to the conclusion that Lady Zariah was the one who had attacked him.
