Chapter 110: Silly Fish (Ch.110)

"How can the Northern Seas be so heavily guarded? It’s unlike the other cities of the Sea Kingdom." Nile murmured as he and the merman stood behind a large rock as the third patrol passed by in the space of thirty minutes.

Although Nile and the merman were encased in a Sea Pod with an invisibility spell cast over it, they still could not take the risk without finding a way past the tight security.

After portaling away from the sea cave, they had been able to get this far and were now at the very borders of the Northern Sea.

The magical barrier prevented them from portaling through with the aid of the trident and so the only option they had was to sneak past the tight security.

According to what Nile knew of the water hydrant, it was located in the deepest caves of the Northern Sea which meant they would have to venture to the heart of the Northern Sea and it was already the ninth day.

There was only one more day to spare before the Flame Poison would take effect, after which, there would be no saving the merman.

Nile was drawn out of his thoughts by a groan of pain and he glanced to the merman at his side who Nile could see was obviously trying to conceal his pain from him.

Zariah’s magic had actively protected the merman’s heart, but there was only so much she could do, this was the ninth day already.

Nile lifted a hand to wipe the beads of sweat forming on the forehead of the merman, his heart aching to see the pain in his eyes.

Wielding the Tide Trident had only worsened his condition and the merman had been in and out of consciousness over the past day, battling the effects of the Flame Poison.

"Bear with it for a little while, we are almost there." Nile assured in a tender tone, although he himself was no longer certain if they would be able to make it.

Nile peaked behind rock for a moment, the patrol routine had not changed and there was only ever a space of about two minutes between. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

However they had already hidden behind this rock for half an hour and Nile knew it better than anyone that they just did not have the time to spare.

The merman’s life was hanging in a balance, if Nile could not procure the water hydrant within the next few hours, he would not have enough time to extract it’s essence.

Nile made to step out from the cover of the rock but a hand grabbed unto his wrist, stopping him from making any movements.

Nile glanced down to his wrist before lifting his gaze to the merman who shook his head slowly, his eyes conveying his disapproval.

"We can’t stay here like this Kristen, the security is only getting tighter and it won’t let up no matter how long we wait, I need to create a distraction." Nile insisted.

The merman still shook his head in refusal but his weak grip on Nile’s wrist was enough to show he was loosing strength and could not maintain consciousness much longer.

Nile sighed as he placed a hand over the merman’s hand on his wrist.

"I vowed to save you, I made a promise to Zariah and to you that I would save you at any cost, I have never been one to go back on my word. I won’t start now." Nile decided.

The merman shook his head, tightening his hold on Nile’s wrist.

"What are you doing?!" Nile whisper yelled when the merman forced himself to stand erect and grabbed the Tide Trident.

"The power of the trident is draining you, anymore and your death will come knocking before the predicted time, No!" Nile refused firmly as he reached for the trident but the merman moved it away from his reach.

"Kristen, this is not going to end well. You can barely stand on your own two feet!" Nile hissed.

The merman shook his head again despite the exhaustion and pain visible in his eyes, instead he moved his hand from Nile’s wrist to his waist, pulling him closer till Nile’s head was rested against his chest.

Nile released a gasp of surprise, his eyes widening slightly while his heart rate accelerated.

"What... what are you doing?" Nile stuttered as the merman’s grasp on his waist tightened,

Nile leaned up to meet the gaze of the merman and the tenderness and adoration Nile saw in the merman’s gaze astonished him yet Nile could swear, his heart had never beat this fast all his life.

The merman’s lips moved to form words and although no sounds came out, Nile studied the movement of the merman’s lips and understood his words.

’I will not let you be in danger...never.’

Nile’s gaze softened as he sighed in resignation.

The merman was the one who had only a day left to live yet here he was, trying to protect Nile from danger.

Nile did not know if he should be touched or angered, there was just something about this merman that stirred within him feelings he could not recognize.

"Why? Why must you protect me?" Nile asked,

Nile watched the merman’s lips for an answer but he gave none, instead smiling down at Nile.

The water around them changed as the merman wielded the trident in Nile’s distraction and as the magic surged all around them, they were sucked straight into a turbulent portal.

Nile’s eyes fluttered closed on instinct and only came open again when the turbulence had stopped and he glanced around them to see they were now in a totally different part of the Northern Sea.

The Sea was much calmer and there were hardly any battle mers in sight, Nile guessed majority of the battle forces of the Northern Sea were distracted by something and Nile guessed something major must have happened in the Sea Kingdom.

As Nile lifted his gaze to the merman whose arm was still was still wrapped around his waist, the firm grip the merman had on his waist loosened and the merman fell backwards, the Tide Trident rolling out of his hands.

Nile’s hand shot out to grasp the merman, pulling his weakened body to himself, he pulled the merman’s right hand over his shoulder and held onto his waist before he stretched a hand to hovering trident and grasped it.

"I told you this wasn’t a good idea now look what you’ve done to yourself, you silly fish!" Nile snarled in annoyance as he glanced around, his eyes catching sight of a huge cave shrouded in darkness a the very bottom of the sea.

Nile’s eyes widened slightly as he took in the specie of fishes swimming by, this was Nile’s own method of telling his location at the depth of the sea.

The black tailed sea breams were a specie of fishes native to the heart of the Northern Seas, or at least that was what the ancient texts said.

Which meant that cave that had such an ominous aura surrounding it was most definitely the deepest cave of the Northern Sea.

"You brought us right to it, didn’t you? You may be a silly fish Kristen but you are one special silly fish." Nile commended, glancing at the merman who smiled weakly.

"You’ve expended such efforts, your life is worthy of the Crimson Moon’s blessing. After this is over, you will forever have the support and protection of Crimson Moon and the spirit wolves of spirit trail." Nile vowed as he stirred his magic and their Sea Pod shot towards the Sea Cave in the depths of the Northern Sea.

As they were propelled downwards, Nile found this particular part of the Sea bed was much deeper than every other, as though it was some sort of canyon dug into the Sea bed.

And the ominous aura all around it had Nile frowning as his senses came on high alert.

"What is this place?" Nile wondered aloud, gazing down into the pitch darkness that stretched far below.

Kristen’s grip on Nile’s shoulder tightened slightly and Nile passed a glance to Kristen who shook his head slightly.

"No worries, you are all I am concerned about right now, I have no business seeking out whatever lurks in those depths." Nile assured the merman as he understood the merman meant to dissuade him from heading that way.

Nile changed direction, although the canyon stretched much deeper, the entrance of the Sea Cave was only halfway into it or less than halfway while the top of the cave was visible even outside the canyon.

As their Sea Pod shot into the thin, funnel like entrance of the cave, it moved through the cave at a slow pace for a short while till they emerged into a larger inner cavern.

"Now where exactly can one find that water hydrant?" Nile murmured aloud just as a pair of large monstrous eyes opened up in the cave wall across from them.
