Episode 30 - Upside Down

Fear does not require complexity. The more intuitive it is, the more fear it instills.

The Creeping Disaster lived up to its name.

Concrete walls shattered like toy blocks. Emerging from the destruction was a grotesque giant.

Its face, stripped down to bone and skin, had three eyes that spun around. The massive spine supporting its head was sharp, like a dinosaur’s backbone.

With four arms extending from its spine, it had a humanoid shape but was clearly not human.

“Gggg, ggggrrr!!!”

Even those filled with confidence earlier couldn't help but feel a surge of fear.

“That’s… the Creeping Disaster…!!”

“...Savage.”

“Everyone focus! Don’t be scared! Begin firing!”

Daegu Defense Forces tanks opened fire in unison. Boom, boom! The 130mm smoothbore guns, capable of leveling buildings, covered the Creeping Disaster in smoke upon impact.

“Grggr, grrrrrr!!”

“Damn it, is that not enough?”

The monstrous figure remained standing, unfazed.

Upper-tier mutants possessed significant resistance to physical attacks, making it difficult for tank volleys to effectively damage the special mutant.

As the giant swung its massive arms, a whirlwind scattered the rising gray smoke.

The soldiers encircling the stadium began to grasp the horror of the disaster from 15 years ago.

But unlike the regular military and police, hunters specialized in hunting such monsters had a different perspective.

“That thing is emitting steam from its back. We can’t just approach it easily.”

‘Black Wing’ Ryu Jin muttered while flying above the Creeping Disaster’s head. His top-tier tech body, equipped with superconducting propellants and improved hydrogen cells, allowed hours of flight without fuel.

Ryu Jin’s role was to provide aerial support and real-time reconnaissance using his superior aerial capabilities.

A leader’s job was not to fight at the forefront but to guide and direct.

Just as entertainment agencies provided direction for their celebrities, Ryu Jin, a natural entertainer, focused more on support and command than combat.

After 10 years of establishing the Dongseong Guild and operating in Daegu Green Zone, Ryu Jin knew his role better than anyone.

“Guild Master, where should we deploy?”

“The 9th vertebrae is the flattest and least mobile area. Ma Seong-chan’s team on the left, Park Kyung-hoon’s team on the right. Focus on severing its nerves!”

“Understood!”

Following Ryu Jin’s orders, Dongseong Guild members equipped with wingsuits jumped out of the helicopters.

The strategy for dealing with such giant mutants was simple: concentrated firepower.

Unlike the tank volleys that covered large areas, small strike teams targeted specific areas for maximum damage.

It was akin to performing surgery.

“Haap!!”

Leading the charge was Daegu’s only S-rank hunter, Blood Sword Ma Seong-chan.

True to his moniker, he landed gracefully after slicing open the protective hide around the 9th vertebrae with his long sword.

This was followed by a barrage of attacks from above, ranging from giant mutant-specific rifle rounds to portable anti-tank rockets.

Red flames penetrated the massive wound created by Ma Seong-chan, causing explosions inside.

Boom, bang!!

The Creeping Disaster let out an ear-splitting cry of pain. Though it trembled, Dongseong did not relent.

“It’s slowing its regeneration! It’s working!”

“Attack the vertebrae! Disabling its regeneration requires concentrated fire on its wounds!”

At Ryu Jin’s shout, the guild members nodded in unison.

Dongseong’s reputation was not built on looks alone.

One of Dongseong’s greatest strengths was not only the unmatched power of its hunters but also their careful judgment in any situation.

They never let their guard down, even when victory seemed assured. They took their time to carefully analyze and exploit their enemy’s weaknesses.

Despite the formidable power of its members, Ryu Jin’s precise commands made the Creeping Disaster cry out in pain repeatedly.

It was working. Just in time, Namjin Front’s main force, led by Guild Master Jung Dae-ho, joined the fray.

With Dongseong attacking from above and Namjin Front from below, the Creeping Disaster began to lose balance.

A hunter accelerated with lightning speed, severing the giant’s hand muscles. Immediately, Namjin Front hunters opened their missile pods.

“Concentrate fire on its face!”

Dongseong was known for harmonious coordinated attacks, utilizing individual performances and information from Guild Master Ryu Jin.

Namjin Front’s strength lay in its systematic, disciplined organization and Guild Master Jung Dae-ho’s excellent command, creating overwhelming synergy.

Precision strikes, impossible for the regular military, were executed without hindering Dongseong’s movements.

Dozens of micro-penetrator missiles obliterated half of the Creeping Disaster’s head.

When the barrage ceased, the monster’s face was half gone.

The special anti-mutant missiles, designed to be effective against high-tier mutants, proved equally effective against the special mutant.

“We’ve cut the 9th vertebrae!”

“Focus on its front legs! Immobilize it!”

“Gggggrrrr!!”

Indeed, the Daegu top two guilds were hunting the Creeping Disaster.

But the special mutant wasn’t merely a target.

Its main weapon was its sheer mass. Several Namjin Front hunters were crushed by its giant hand.

Crack.

The hunters were scattered like mashed potatoes, unable to even scream.

“Damn it!”

“Stay focused! Keep advancing!”

“Ugh!”

Dongseong suffered casualties as well. A hunter struck directly by the high-temperature steam shot from its back fell to the ground, tech body melting.

“Dong-hoon!!”

“This bastard!!”

Even A-rank hunters were instantly roasted if they made a mistake.

Ryu Jin and Jung Dae-ho exchanged glances. They nodded in agreement without words.

“Let’s finish this!”

“All units, annihilate the enemy!”

Dragging out the battle would only lead to more casualties. Each guild member was a meticulously selected elite, so each death was a significant loss.

With the battle turning in their favor, a quick resolution was necessary. Delaying could introduce unexpected complications.

Finally, the Creeping Disaster collapsed as its 9th vertebra was severed.

The conventional way to deal with giant mutants was to incinerate their organs or simultaneously sever their heart and neck.

“Bearing 42 degrees! Fire the railgun!”

Namjin Front forces pierced the giant’s heart through a side wound.

Dongseong’s Blood Sword accelerated, slicing the Creeping Disaster’s neck.

“Gggggrrr, grrrrr…”

The once fearsome special mutant let out a final death rattle and crumbled.

“Did… did we win?!”

“We did it! We avenged ourselves!!”

Amidst the cheers directed at the fallen giant,

“Confirming the success of Nephilim Hunt operation. Proceeding to ‘Extermination’ operation.”

thud, thud, thud.

phooosh!

Nanomachines were released over the stadium.

“What’s going on, uncle? You made a fuss for nothing,” Yu Hyun-a complained while looking through her scope. From her perspective, nothing happening was a good thing, wasn’t it?

I turned back, exasperated, as Park Hyung-rok sighed and shook his head.

“Do-jin.”

Just then, Ha-an, who had been hacking into military communications, stood up abruptly.

I nodded silently. The players weren’t supposed to face the Creeping Disaster now.

My current enemies were the endless mutants and hunters gone berserk from the nanomachines.

“Uncle, is that helicopter the one you mentioned?”

“Yes.”

“But it’s not coming this way?”

“They don’t drop nanomachines here. Instead…”

Boom!

Massive explosions erupted from the opposite building, turning the defensive line into chaos.

“They deploy pre-installed nanomachines.”

I pointed to the rising flames. Hyun-a shivered.

“Team Leader Hyung-rok, gather Haneul-gil’s forces. The mutants will swarm. Ha-an, come with me to the defensive line where the hunters are positioned.”

“Understood!”

I addressed the three with a firm voice.

“Our actions now determine the survival of Daegu Green Zone and everyone dear to us.”

“…”

“To survive, we must do whatever it takes. Brace yourselves.”

I activated the Impact Gauntlet. Under the setting sun, the crimson glow shimmered with its distinctive startup sound.

[POWER ACTIVATED]

“Let’s meet again.”

Now, it was solely my stage.

From the moment I was possessed until now,

I had been waiting for this very moment.
