The 70s Novel: The Supporting Character Just Wants to Lie Down-Chapter 163: Trouble During Free Outing
The recruits do have breaks as well; mixing work with rest prevents people from going crazy.
On Sundays, after they finished simple tasks, it was free time.
This place was a bit far from the city center, and there were no buses. So, even though it was Sunday, Cheng Xue found it hard to leave the training base and go home to the city center.
In the past few Sundays, Wang Miaomiao and the others were so exhausted from training that when they heard about rest time, they just stayed in the dorms, too lazy to move.
Today, having trained for a month, they felt energetically great, so everyone suggested going out together for a stroll. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Not too far, just to the nearest town from here.
All ten people from one dorm went out together, running and walking along the way, giggling and chatting. It took them nearly two hours to get there.
The town was quite big, and once they entered, they decided to split up.
Wang Cuihua took her four little followers with her, Luan Qian and Xue Yunyun were a pair, and Wang Miaomiao left with Cheng Xue and Jiang Huilan.
First, the three of them went to the town’s supply and marketing cooperative to pick gifts. Because a few days ago, Cheng Xue and Jiang Huilan received their first-ever allowance, though it was only six yuan, it was something they earned themselves, holding different significance. So they wanted to pick some gifts to send to family.
Wang Miaomiao, holding that six yuan, sighed deeply, feeling her wages had been severely reduced. She wondered if Jiang Yan had sorted out her artbook yet.
Having accustomed to a good life, going back to liberation-era conditions was truly hard for her to accept.
She hoped Jiang Yan could help; she still counted on that side income to live well...
Although they really wanted to buy something nice, funds were indeed limited. Cheng Xue and Jiang Huilan quickly made their picks, briskly paid, and headed straight to the post office to send their gifts.
Wang Miaomiao also sent a letter, with five yuan tucked inside.
After finishing their tasks, they began to leisurely wander around, strolling until they ended up at the state-run restaurant in town. The three of them instantly had their eyes light up, exchanged knowing smiles, and walked in unison.
The military meals were admittedly sufficient to fill the stomach, but in terms of taste, the state-run restaurant of today was naturally victorious.
The three entered, unceremoniously ordered four dishes and one soup, and enjoyed a hearty meal.
Regarding money, they weren’t living off allowances, and the three agreed to come back next month.
After leaving the state-run restaurant, there was still plenty of time before everyone was supposed to meet up, so the three continued to roam around.
But after just a few steps, they bumped into Luan Qian dashing out of a small alley, panicked.
Seeing her looking unwell, Cheng Xue quickly asked, "Luan Qian, what’s wrong? Where’s Xue Yunyun? Why isn’t she with you?"
"Cheng Xue, it’s fortunate you’re here; Yunyun’s missing." Luan Qian was speaking, her voice trembling. Her anxiety was evident.
"What happened? Explain it clearly..." Wang Miaomiao slightly frowned, her mind involuntarily beginning to wander.
Luan Qian succinctly explained what had happened.
It turned out, after Luan Qian and Xue Yunyun had split from them, they wandered aimlessly and stumbled upon an open-air circus performing. The perimeter of the show was surrounded by black cloth to block outside peeping, leaving only one entrance.
Without much thought, the two bought tickets and squeezed in to watch. When the performance ended, and they came out amidst the swarming crowd, they got separated.
Luan Qian, not thinking much at the time, just wanted to get out quickly to the open space outside the exit to regroup.
As she was squeezing out, she kept feeling someone trying to get close to her from behind, acting sneaky. She evaded a few times.
Just as she stepped out, someone inexplicably grabbed her wrist and tried to drag her away.
Luan Qian urgently shouted, "What are you doing..."
The other person complained, "Wife, the show is over, let’s hurry home. The baby at home is waiting for you to feed him..."
While speaking, the man tried dragging her away; naturally, Luan Qian resisted and warned, "Let go of me, I don’t know you."
The man pleaded, insistent, "Wife, I know I’m not capable, and you look down on me, but we already have a child; you can’t just ignore the baby..."
Luan Qian frowned deeply, her wrist was hurting; the man’s grip was not normal.
And some bystanders, looking for amusement, even helped the man accuse her of being in the wrong.
Even if she was not the sharpest, Luan Qian knew she had run into trouble.
In truth, the man was anxious too; he never expected Luan Qian to be so strong, unable to drag her away.
Luan Qian, eyes darkened, looked at him, and without a word, struck his face with her right hand. Startled, the man instinctively retreated. Luan Qian followed up, gripping his left hand with her right, pulling forward, and then gave a fierce kick to his stomach.
The pain made him instinctively clutch his belly and let go. But Luan Qian wouldn’t let it go, flipping him into a hold, pressing him firmly to the ground.
"Ah..." The man cried out in pain, cursing, "You damn woman... Let go of me now, or I’ll kill you."
Luan Qian gave him a slap. "Hmph, not pretending anymore, huh?"
"Folks, this person is a human trafficker. I’m a female soldier from a nearby unit; could anyone help me take him to the armed forces’ department?" Although she could knock him down, she didn’t want to drag the big man around the town to find the armed forces to take him in.
Moreover, she had other concerns.
By now, Xue Yunyun still hadn’t come out, and she couldn’t help but worry.
The crowd, initially confused and unsure why the man was knocked down by the woman, soon understood when she explained and a few kind-hearted locals took over the man, restraining him and heading to the armed forces’ department.
And Luan Qian hurriedly called out to the crowd, "Yunyun, where are you?"
She called out three times with no response, growing more anxious, and rushed to the circus entrance.
"Hey... We’re closed; you can’t enter." Someone at the door stopped her, and the person looked at her with an unfriendly gaze.
Luan Qian frowned and took action; these days of training were not in vain, and she quickly took him down.
"What are you doing? What are you doing, causing trouble?" Inside, likely hearing the commotion, three people came out looking aggressive.
Luan Qian knew better to recognize she wouldn’t be able to force her way in. She was alone and not skilled enough to take on three at once.
"Gentlemen, my comrade hasn’t come out; I need to go in and find her." Luan Qian directly stated her identity, hoping these people would be deterred. She realized this circus troupe was not simple.
"No one’s left inside, you better leave... Don’t make trouble for us." The man evidently didn’t care and directly dismissed her.
Luan Qian reluctantly complied, stepping away from the door but not leaving too far, hiding around the corner, keeping a close watch on the entrance.
She felt Xue Yunyun hadn’t come out. Now, what should she do? Forced entry wasn’t possible, and leaving to find help risked changes during the meantime.
Luckily, maybe the others got scared too. Not long after, she saw someone suspiciously sneaking out with a large bag.
Luan Qian quickly followed...
