Chapter 14 - The stirring monster

In the deepest part of the snowcliff ice, a monster was stirring.

A dark unknown entity sprang forth, it's talon curving on the ridges of the million years ice cage and snapping twigs that house the monster that'll unmake the world.

The entity was garbed in a red robe, his red eyes rimmed with black like a brimstone. He produced a crystal goblets of fae blood.

It took him fifty thousand years to gather enough blood for this purpose. He poured the blood onto the snapping twigs with manacles thick as a giant's thigh.

The twigs hissed, a dark smoke emanating from it. The blood slowly trickled into each crevices of the ice until the thick white had faded into crystalline and transparent as water.

The third stage of unlocking the heaven's cage had been completed. Only a few more waits, and his master would finally be free.

And they could rule the world together side by side, as they'd done before.

Burn it into ashes, pour the flakes into the deepest of the ocean. Listen to the delicious mournful cries, the pretty sight of blood splattered everywhere, as they righten the hierarchy.

With this thought in mind, his steps were lighter. His heart fuller as he headed into the human realm for the next part of his quest.

The seven jewels of hell.

Karma was dressed for work, her suit crisp and her lips bright red. Today, she would see if Alphonse's idea was useful or as useless as it looked.

The door opened a crack, Veronica peered in, her eyes crusty with sleep.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Karma and let herself into the room.

"Karma!" She smiled slyly.

"Vero!" Karma smiled back.

They shook hands, a complicated sisterhood handshake they'd discovered when they were six.

"You look so good. Where are you off to?" Veronica yawned widely.

Karma laughed and shook her head. Some things never change.

"To your step cousin's dress fitting." Karma narrowed her eyes at her, "Don't Tell me you've forgotten?"

"I won't tell you." Said Veronica sheepishly.

"You'd better get your dirty ass of my bed and get ready," she made a show of checking her expensive wristwatch, "you have thirty minutes to get ready madam."

"Oh piss off!" Veronica groaned. She sprang up suddenly, her eyes lit with mischief. "You owe me some," she tapped her chin with a finger.

Karma pretend to be absorbed in packing her bag, as she tried to hide her embarrassment.

"Ha ha! Not going to work on me. We all know you're shameless and have no bone in your body for embarrassment." She grinned.

"Fine fine. I'll tell you what happened between Ethan and I." Karma replied doggedly.

"Oh no. You'll tell everything right from the very beginning.... Mrs Li." She enunciated.

Karma shooed her cousin out of the room a while later and smiled to herself. Her gaze caught the mirror and she paused.

She was missing something. She rummaged her bag and brought of the necklace. Alphonse gave her this in front of Seraphina, hadn't she better put it on now to avoid suspicion?

She clasped the necklace on and it settled below her throat.

It was somehow heavier than last night. It was less cold than it had been too. Now it was even a bit warm.

She stared at her reflection in the mirror, appreciating the way the emerald green jewelry set off blue eyes, when something caught her eyes.

It was the Jade. In the reflection, it looked brighter, a soft glow emanating from it. It edges were slightly fuzzed and appeared to be...is that ripple on the edge of the mirror?

She had no time to ponder on the abnormal situation because the door was slowly opened, her stepsister standing there.

Her hair was swept into a bun, with two wisps left to frame her face. She looked gorgeous as usual, in a blue satin dress and a diamond necklace.

"Good morning Karma. How did you sleep?" She eyed the room warily, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Look at you gorgeous," Karma complimented Karma.

At least that was true. Seraphina might be a snake, but she was a pretty snake.

"I know right? Ethan got me this dress last week when we went shopping." She made a little twirl giggling elegantly.

Karma rolled her eyes and resisted the urge to gag. Ugh, here comes queen of saccharine sweetmess.

A conceited pretty snake, Karma added internally.

"Are you ready?" Seraphina swept a condescending stare at Karma's ensemble.

"Let me grab my purse. I'll join you downstairs soon." Seraphina smiled and turned to leave.

"Veronica is coming too right?" Karma asked.

"Yes she is. She's so adorable isn't she?" Came Seraphina's sweet voice. Her face screwed up for a second before she smoothen it out.

"The cutest." Replied Karma absentmindedly.

When Seraphina left, Karma grabbed the water bottle and downed it in three gulps. Another minute with that conceitedly sweet bitch and she might barf.

Her reapplied her lipgloss, her eyes strained on the mirror. Nothing.

She trailed her fingers on the Jade, nothing happened. And the reflection showed the necklace, no hidden ripple of fuzzy edges.

Karma pinched her brow in confusion. She wasn't hallucinating was she?

Maybe her sight was declining.

"Or maybe I just need coffee." She said silently to herself.

She grabbed her purse and turned to leave, her eyes flew to the mirror once again. There was nothing.

Oh well. She'd better get going before Seraphina comes back.

Veronica appeared in the hallway, looking pretty. Her oval face was framed with glasses.

"Here comes the bride maid in waiting." Veronica said in a sing-song voice.

Karma elbowed her playfully and they headed downstairs to the garage where their driver was waiting.

As the car sped off on the highway, with Seraphina carrying on a thr

ee-way conversation all by herself with a few replies from Veronica.

Karma could not stop the tendril of unease weaving through her stomach. Something feels wrong.

Very wrong.
