Lucius POV

There was another pause on the other end before Noah’s voice came on strong.

"I should be there with her, Lucius," his voice caught in his throat "I should have been there. She needs me and I’m here...".

"Your Majesty, the Luna is fine. I’m sure and I promise she’s been taken care of. By tomorrow, she’ll be home with you and you don’t have to worry. For tonight, you need to look after the Kingdom and let us look after our Luna. Please,".

After a while, he chuckled dryly "You’re right," he said, "I’ll be here, let me know if there’s any other news,".

After the call ended, I took a deep breath, looking up to the sky filled with stars. It was going to be a long night indeed. Moving towards the soldiers who had a big fire going on, I cleared my throat to get their attention.

"Thank. You all for today," I started "Rescuing one of the most important people in Moon Whisper is a great honor indeed and I want to applaud every one of you for making it possible. We won’t be leaving tonight and I apologize for the inconvenience..." I paused, as my eyes scanned their faces.

"However, the mission this night is greater than what we had before. We’re the keep the Luna safe until tomorrow. So, yes, we can party all we want but we must bear in mind that our Luna is with us and will depend on us to keep her safe. Stay alert and remain our drill,".

They all chorused a "Yessir!" in unison.

I went around after that, checking up on the security arrangements and making adjustments. When I finished, I climbed up to the small hill, overlooking the building. It was quiet there and the stars seemed to shine brighter. As I stood there gazing at the sky, Kurtis walked towards me, silently.

We stood together in silence until he spoke first.

"You did well today, Beta," he said breaking "The rescue was executed flawlessly,".

I nodded, accepting the compliment. "It was a team effort. But now, I fear we face an even greater challenge,".

Kurtis sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Noah?" he asked.

I nodded.

"Indeed," he continued. "The pack needs its Luna and Noah... he needs both Selene and their child. I can’t imagine what he’s going through right now. He thinks all of this is his fault,".

The conversation ended abruptly and we stood in contemplative silence, neither of us noticed Emilia approaching until she was right beside us. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but there was a determined set to her jaw. freewebnσvel.cøm

"Any news?" I asked gently.

She shook her head. "No change yet. The doctors are with her now," she paused, looking between Kurtis and me. "I just... I needed some air. And some company that isn’t filled with medical jargon and worried glances,".

Without warning, she stepped closer to Kurtis. In a move that surprised us – she leaned in and kissed him. It was a desperate act, born from stress and the need for comfort rather than genuine passion.

In between kissing, the two settle on the grass as Emilia’s shirt went over her head, her bare breast bouncing in front of Kurtis. To think I just had a fill of her moments earlier. Both of them panted as they resumed kissing and touching all over, I felt my throat constrict with air as I stared at them trying not to get jealous and aroused at the same time.

When I least expected, her lips left Kurtis and landed on mine. Instinctively, I responded to the kiss, feeling my wolf purr with love for Emilia. He liked her so much. Then, as if suddenly remembering myself, I gently but firmly pushed her away.

"Emilia," I said, my voice a mixture of confusion and concern. "What are you doing?"

Tears welled up in her eyes. "I’m sorry, I just... I needed to feel something other than fear and worry. I thought maybe..." she trailed off, looking at me. "Maybe we could all find some comfort together since we’re mates,".

"Me and you are mates, Emilia. And No," I said firmly "This isn’t right. We’re all under a lot of stress, but this isn’t the way to deal with it and not with someone else,".

"I have a name," Kurtis chirped in "And you can live in denial for as long as you want. Have it whatever way you want," he hissed.

Without another word, I turned and walked away, my body tense with conflicting emotions. I needed to put some distance between myself and them, to clear my head and refocus on what was truly important – Selene’s wellbeing and the safety of the pack.

As I walked away, Emilia’s soft groan reached my ears but I ignored her, hoping my erection would go down before I reached the fire. An hour later, I was sitting at the corner of the fire, listening to the soldiers teasing each other with one funny story and another when Emilia came down.

Immediately she and Kurtis flanked me on both sides making it impossible for me to do anything without drawing stares. Emily reached for my hands, I could feel her wolf whimpering.

"I’m so sorry," she said quietly "I don’t know what came over me,".

"It’s okay," I soothed. "We’re all under immense pressure and it’s only normal for you to seek to take away that pressure. So, it’s fine,".

"You have to accept it at some point, Lucius," Kurtis said suddenly, calling for my attention, but I ignored him, pretending that he wasn’t there. "You cannot live in denial for the rest of your life or in oblivion. The more you deny it, the more your wolf needs more,".

"Watch me," I scoffed dryly refusing to meet his gaze.

"You’re a coward!" Kurtis laughed dryly "What are you scared of? Having three mates is nothing new in our world. So...".

"I don’t care if I’ll need to reject both of you just to get back my sanity but Kurtis," I gave him a frosty smile "I will never accept you as my mate. I like Emilia... my wolf loves her but you... never in a million years. This is just a phase and it’ll pass,".

A smile lingered on Kurtis’s lips as he stared at me "I wasn’t expecting anything more than more cowardly talk," he laughed "Anyways, if you’re ready for that rejection, you know where to find me. I’m tired of putting up with this nonsense,".

With that, he walked away leaving me with Emilia. I saw her hesitate and I knew she wanted to follow him, I could feel it. It was as if I could read their thoughts. The matebond thing was indeed messy. Emilia’s wolf liked Kurtis more, Kurtis’s wolf liked me more and my wolf liked Emilia more.

"Go with him," I offered "I want to be alone anyways,".

She nodded and ran after him. Long after most of the soldiers dozed off and those on duty were taking turns guarding the area, I stayed awake, staring into nothing. My head was too full for sleep. But, just as the first rays of sunlight began to peek over the horizon, the doctor burst out of the room Selene was kept, a smile on his face.

"I’ve detected a heartbeat!" he announced. "It’s faint, but it’s there and getting stronger,".

I sighed in relief and immediately sent a message to Noah sharing the good news.

"Gather around everyone, we need to be back home before noon!"
