Chapter 240: A silent prayer...

Selene POV

I knew I’d struck her where it hurt the most.

Her grip on my arm loosened slightly as shock registered on her face.

"What did you say?" she turned and demanded, her voice a mixture of anger and disbelief "What did you just say Brooke did?"

"I thought you were besties," I teased "And I honestly thought that someone might have mentioned it to you or something but seems no one has, then I guess it’s not important,".

Her eyes narrowed with fury as she landed a slap on my cheeks and seized my neck "You’ll tell me what exactly Brooke did or I’ll harm the baby. You don’t know me, Selene... I am not like all the people you’ve met who go easy on you, I’ll fuck you up if you don’t tell me what I need to know right now,".

I laughed as blood sipped from the cut on the corner of my lips "And you don’t know me, Jade. I am not the woman whom you all think I am. I may look like a weakling on the outside but you cannot go through half of what I’ve been through and still retain your sanity. It’s not possible. So, do yourself a favour and stop bugging me,".

"Tell me what Brooke did!" she yelled, her body trembling. "Tell me what she did right now!"

Realizing I’d truly struck a nerve, I decided to press on despite the danger. Anything that would delay whatever she intends to do with me. At least, if we stayed here for longer, my scent would stay for at least 8 hours, making it easy for me to be traced.

"Fine!" I rolled my eyes and she removed her hands from my neck moving backwards, hands akimbo. "Your dear friend Brooke was Noah’s ex-girlfriend,".

From the small gasp that escaped her lips, I knew she wasn’t aware, so I pressed on.

"So, she was Noah’s girlfriend for three years before they broke up and she moved away. Around the time that the envoys from your pack came to propose a marriage agreement between you and Noah, precisely on our wedding day, Brooke came around a few weeks after... I think two weeks after our wedding and tried to warm her way into Noah’s heart. She succeeded and of course, she was your friend at that time, I wonder if she might have given you any peculiar advice to use on Noah... did it work?"

"That’s not true!" she stuttered.

"She’s had her hands all over Noah even after. It took her lying about being pregnant for Noah to banish her from the pack but the thing is, she has been your friend all this while, right? She told me once that she’s known you right from when she was in middle school and I can’t help but wonder if...".

"You’re lying," she interrupted me, her eyes narrowing dangerously but there was a flicker of uncertainty in her gaze as she spoke.

"Am I?" I countered my voice steady despite my racing heart. "Why don’t you ask her yourself? I’m sure she’d be more than happy to share all the intimate details with you and I’m pretty sure that one of the reasons she came back was to claim, Noah... in time you’d see that,".

For a moment, I could practically hear the wheels in her head turning as she stared at me, grappling between her anger at me and this information about her supposed friend. The conflict played out across her face, her grip on my arm alternating between tightening and loosening.

Suddenly, a voice called out from the group which I didn’t notice – approaching us. "Jade! What is the holdup? We need to move!"

The interruption seemed to snap Jade back to the present. She shook her head as if clearing away doubts and her cruel smile returned. "Nice try, Selene. But your little mind games won’t work on me. I’ve known Brooke all my life and you have no idea what she has done to prove her loyalty to me. She knows I’ve always been into Noah... she’d never,".

"That’s fine!" I interrupted her with a small laugh "You can tell yourself whatever you want. I don’t care. Now can you cup all this crap and let me go? What did I ever do to you? Noah was already married to me and he wasn’t going to accept another woman as his wife. Aren’t you a bit ashamed that you’re still fighting over a man – not just any man, someone who’s married,".

"I met him way longer than you and we were going to be married... you have no right to claim him as yours. Noah was mine before you or Brookes’ and I’m going to prove to you all that I always get anything I want if I set my heart to it. You’ll have plenty of time to regret your lies where we’re going,".

With a forceful tug, Jade began dragging me towards the waiting group. As we drew close, I could make out the face - it was a mix of werewolves and humans, all wearing grim expressions on their faces. Some could barely contain their malice as they stared at me.

"Listen, Jade," I turned to her one more time before we approached the group. "I know you’re angry about Noah... trust me, I know what it feels like to love someone who doesn’t love you back, I’ve had to live like that for 7 years until I let go and I promise you, you can do it. I swear. You just have to put yourself first and everything other thing will come swiftly,".

"I’ve been in love with Noah for 15 years... that’s like half of yours and I’m tired of doing nothing. I told you, I would make him reject you and marry me. If you’re good to my team and me, who knows, we might decide to keep you alive afterwards,".

That means they weren’t going to harm me now. They wanted to use me as bait to lure Noah in. At least, I wasn’t dying now.

"You won’t get away with this," I warned, struggling against Jade’s iron grip. Noah will find me. The entire pack will be looking for me but if you help me now, I’ll make sure you’re not punished. I’ll tell Noah that I survived because of you. So, please," I pleaded.

Jade laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "Oh, I’m counting on it, Selene. That’s all part of the plan. But by the time they figure out where you are, it’ll be far too late and then they’ll just have to meet my requests. Viola... it’s not that bad,".

As we reached the group, my eyes darted around, desperately searching for a way out. But I was surrounded.

One of the men stepped forward, a tall, imposing figure with a scar running down the side of his face. "Everything’s ready," he reported to Jade. "The false trail has been laid. It should keep us busy for quite a while,".

Jade nodded approvingly. "Excellent work, Marcus. By the way, has Jared arrived yet?"

Jared? The name rang a bell to me but I couldn’t place a finger. But the more I thought about the name, the more it felt like I was supposed to know who he was. I leaned closer and whispered to Jade.

"Is Jared someone I know? It feels like I’ve heard that name somewhere. Could you...".

"Shut up bitch!" she growled her face inches away from mine "Do you think you’re on a fucking holiday? You should be cowering with fear because if you know what awaits you, you would not be asking me stupid questions,"

"He said he’ll join us at the first meetup with some people of his own. He didn’t want to walk in circles,"

Then she turned to Marcus. "Fine, let’s move out. We have a long journey ahead of us,".

As the group began to move, I suddenly felt a wave of dizziness wash over me. I didn’t know if it was from fear or maybe the baby. I couldn’t be sure. I stumbled, nearly falling to my knees.

"Oh no, we can’t have that," Jade said, her voice dripping with false concern. She motioned to one of the men. "Give her the sedative. We need her compliant for the trip,".

I saw Marcus’s eyes run the length of my body; he was hesitating. "Sedating her with her pregnancy is not advisable Luna. The substance might be harmful to both mother and child," he said.

"Don’t be silly, Marcus. We’re not doing this for some stupid compassion. Give her the sedative and let’s get this over with. We’re delaying too much. For all I know Jared must have arrived there,".

Marcus drew closer to her and tried to whisper something to Jade but she refused and took a step backwards. "Do as I have instructed, Marcus? I don’t give a damn about things like that,".

Marcus inhaled deeply, giving me another apologetic look as he walked in my direction. Before I could protest, I felt a sharp prick on my arm. Almost immediately, the world began to spin, colors blurred together as my consciousness slipped away, My last thought before the darkness claimed me was of Noah and a silent prayer that he would find me in time,".
