Chapter 238: The biggest threat to the Luna...

Selene POV

The cool evening breeze carried the scent of impending rain as I paced the length of Noah’s bedroom, my mind was still a whirlwind of fear and disbelief. The auditors that were on our way to the pack for investigation, especially the members of the pack that had security clearance were found dead just a mile away from Moon Whisper.

Noah has not had a moment of rest since the news broke earlier today. What was worse, the news of the death of the auditors had somehow gotten to the ears of the people and now, our communication department was running through and fro trying to assure the people that they need not be afraid.

But who were they deceiving?

Everyone knows that auditors... no matter how intense a war is, even something as simple as a riot, they cannot be killed. Once they’re dressed in their uniforms for identification both fighting sides cannot kill them. They were like mini gods around here.

My gaze strayed to Noah who was back from his office but was still working. The girls were also in the outer part of Noah’s bedroom sleeping, they were the first people he had asked for as soon as the news had broken and it warmed my heart greatly at that act. More than anything, I wished I could leave the pack house for a few minutes to the mountain where I always go to talk with the moon goddess. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Why was this happening? She hadn’t mentioned anything about this kind of bloodshed and I couldn’t help but wonder if she was hiding something from me. As for Kragen... it’s been almost two months since I last heard from him. Was he busy? Or was he serving punishment again? Still, it would have been nice to have him at this moment.

Noah was typing furiously on his phone as he muttered more to himself than to me. "We need to alert the pack elders, increase patrols around the territory borders and see if we can bring in the women and the children from the lower village into the terrain of the pack house. Maybe we can convince some of the neutral packs to side with us,".

I paused my pacing, turning to face Noah. "Do you think that will be enough? We don’t even know what we’re going up against. Nora and Brooke are still in their quarters. We need to identify the source of the threat before we take action. I want to believe that those women are smart enough to consume an entire pack because of jealousy,".

I shuddered, remembering the cold malice I had seen in Brooke’s face the other time we met.

Noah looked up, his eyes meeting mine. The fear I saw there did nothing to calm my nerves. "I don’t know," I admitted softly. "But we have to try. I won’t let them hurt you, the girls or our child,".

As if on cue, I felt a strong kick from my belly making me smile. I placed a hand on my swollen belly. "This little one is a fighter already," I murmured.

Noah stood, crossing the room to place his hand next to mine. For a moment we stood in silence, feeling the life, move beneath our touch. It was a perfect distraction from the storm happening around us.

Suddenly, Noah took me back to the bed, gently depositing me as he asked. "What do you think of Princess Jade? Like what kind of person do you think she is?".

"She’s spoilt," I chuckled remembering the first incident that led to our meeting She was very bold but I don’t know her so well but I know she’s the type of person to get whatever she sets her mind to. Why do you ask?"

"You know, earlier today I gave my sister and Brooke a restriction Bracelet. With it on, they won’t be able to change into their wolves and I’d be able to track their movement at all times. So, I was talking with Kurtis and he asked me why I didn’t give Jade a bracelet too,".

"She doesn’t seem like that kind of person to cause trouble... not that she’s not troublesome," I quickly added "But I can’t associate her with violence or the kind of things your sister or Brooke have done,".

"Exactly what I told him but Kurtis pulled out several photos of her meeting with popular rogue lords abroad. After her father had died and since there was no one to take over the reins as Lycan... we agreed that we’d keep the place vacant and since I was the head Lycan back then, I would be overseeing their kingdom until she got married but that was too much for me because I had my hands full with Moon Whisper,".

He sighed "So, I gave it to another Lycan with a smaller pack... anyways, she’s been moving around quite a lot and you know Kurtis always has the strangest of news. He believes that she might be plotting revenge on you,".

"On me?" I was mortified "I am not the enemy here. Is she still bitter about us getting married?" I asked.

"It seems so," Noah smiled sheepishly "Seeing her with Brooke again, I don’t need anyone to tell me that Brooke must have fed her with lies. I just know that. But not to worry...".

He was interrupted by a sharp knock at the door. Both me and Noah tensed, exchanging a wary glance before Noah called out. "Enter!"

The door swung open to reveal Reid. He had worried lines on his face as he entered. "My apologies for the interruption," Your Majesty," he said bowing slightly. "But there’s been a development you need to know about,".

My heart sank. "What now?" I asked dreading the answer. As if we haven’t had enough chaos for today.

Reid’s eyes darted between me and Noah. "We’ve received reports of movement at the already breached easter border by the men we send out there to fix it. There’s a large group of foxes, moving fast. Our scouts believe it might be one of the reasons for the initial breaching,".

Noah cursed under his breath. "I knew it. I knew something was wrong,".

"That’s not all, your Majesty," Reid continued, his voice grave. "There are rumours that another troop of rogues is coming in from the South. It seems they may be planning a coordinated attack. Not to talk of the council of External auditors are on their way to Moon Whisper, protesting as they come. They’re not happy about their members who were killed outside Moon Whisper,".

I felt the blood drain from my face. I sank into a nearby chair, my legs suddenly weak. "All these people are coming for us?" I whispered "Why? We haven’t done anything wrong?"

"We don’t know the motive of their attacks. The security council is already putting arsenals in place and is moving women and children in the lower villages as we speak,".

Noah knelt beside me, taking my hands in his. "We’ll face this together," he said firmly. "I won’t let them harm you our children. I swear it,".

Reid cleared his throat. "If I may suggest, it might be wise to move Luna Selene to a more secure location. The Kingdom’s defences are strong but if we’re facing a two-pronged attack, we best be ready...".

Noah nodded grimly. "You’re right. We need to get Selene and the girls somewhere safe," He turned to me, his eyes pleading. "I know you won’t like this but I need you to go to the sanctuary in the mountains. It’s well-hidden and easily defensible,".

I opened my mouth to protest, to insist that I must stay and fight with him, but the look in Noah’s eyes stopped me. I could see the fear there, the desperate need to protect me and our unborn child.

"You’re carrying the future heir to Moon Whisper...today more than anything you come first,".

Reid nodded in agreement behind him.

Slowly, I nodded. "Alright," I said softly. "But promise me you’ll be careful. I can’t lose you, Noah,".

He leaned in, pressing his forehead to mine. "I promise, we’ll get through this, Selene. Together,".

Reid cleared his throat again. "We should move quickly. I’ll arrange Luna Selene’s departure immediately and..." the words died on Reid’s lips as the door swung open and Kurtis walked in.

"Let her remain in Moon Whisper," Kurtis said firmly. "I came as soon as I heard about the foxes... that’s the biggest of all our problems, Noah... Foxes are dangerous, not only can they take up another person’s form, they can wreak havoc more than we can ever know. She’s safer here where we can all see her,".

"We don’t know that, Alpha Kurtis," Reid scowled "She’s carrying the heir of Moon Whisper, getting her to safety is my number one priority before the King,".

"This is just a distraction, Reid," Kurtis turned to him, his eyes flaming. "They know they cannot easily get to the king right here so they’re trying to lure her out of the pack besides, how do you even know they’re coming for the Luna? Miss Brooke and Miss Nora are still in their quarters last I checked and Princess Jade is staying in the guest quarters in the pack. She was seen drinking a while ago. These are the biggest threat to the Luna and they’re still in the pack, why then should we send her away?"
