Chapter 223: The counter reversal

Andria’s POV

"I don’t understand. What do you mean?" the Luna asked.

"The culprit may not even be the suspect," he replied.

"Let’s call Mel first, since she was present at the game night, and she lives in the apartment with them," the Luna insisted.

I was lost in thought, studying Sir Kaelric. His gestures, his words, and his mannerisms all seemed too mechanical and stand-offish, as if he were pretending to play against me.

Something must have gone wrong somewhere, and I must find out what that is. But now is just not the right time to ask such questions.

"Allison, send for a guard behind the door," the headmistress commanded.

Allison walked briskly towards the door, her head held high in a dramatic posture. She returned a few seconds later with two guards.

I swallowed a chuckle. What does the council need two guards for? Just to get Mel?.

"You brought two?" The Luna asked.

"Yes, I thought you might be needing two," Allison said, twisting her lips a little.

The Luna rolled her eyes, directing her gaze to the headmistress.

"Head to the female dormitory, the general one. Find a student named Mel," The headmistress ordered the guards, and they turned swiftly towards the door.

"Make sure you bring her here unharmed," the Luna added.

They nodded again, opened the door and left.

We stood there still, I, Becca and Allison. Becca was picking her nails, Allison was biting her lips and rolling her eyes at intervals, and I was lost in thought as I stared at Sir Kaelric, shifting my gaze anytime he looked towards my direction.

He chuckled on one occasion, and I was flushed, knowing that he had caught me staring intently at him.

We stood in silence for some minutes until the headmistress broke the silence. "We wouldn’t be discussing anything until Mel..."

The guards opened the door with a bang, suggesting they were struggling to get Mel inside.

"Let me be, I can walk in on my own," Mel said as she walked into the council room.

Her eyes first landed on me, then on Becca and Allison at the same time, before she turned her gaze towards the council members.

"Greetings, council members," she finally uttered.

The guards left, closing the door behind them.

"What’s the chaos about?" The headmistress asked.

"I was arrested in my apartment today, and dragged out like an offender, and they weren’t even saying why they were dragging me in that manner," Mel answered.

"Oh, I see. You see yourself as not being free of any offence, and that’s why you caused such a nuisance when called to the council chamber. If you really felt innocent, why fight? Must your summoning be based on negative intentions?" The Luna asked.

Mel fidgeted, shifting her gaze from the Luna and then to us.

"Everyone in Ashwood knows that once you are summoned to the council, it’s either that you are in trouble or that you are to be assigned a duty. And of course I knew I can’t be assigned a duty so..."

"So what? Your mouth seems faster than your brain, Mel," Sir Kaelric cut in, straightening his shirt.

The mere sound of his voice made Mel shudder. She started sobbing immediately.

"There is no need for those crocodile tears, especially when we have not even started questioning you," Sir Kaelric continued.

"Weren’t you in the apartment during the game night..." the headmistress started.

"That’s not the question to ask. Weren’t you part of the game night guests?" Sir Kaelric interjected; his countenance looked as if he were boiling over.

"I...was," Mel stuttered.

"Were you part of the organizers?" The Luna asked.

"Who invited the guests to the game night?" Sir Kaelric added.

Mel looked from Sir Kaelric to the Luna and then back to Sir Kaelric, opening her mouth and closing in confusion.

"Answer the questions," the headmistress added.

"I was...part of...the.."

"Don’t waste our time," Sir Kaelric scolded.

"I was part...of the organizers of the game night," Mel swallowed.

"And?" Sir Kaelric demanded.

"But I didn’t send the invitations. I was just helping Aria and Becca out," Mel rapped her answers as if she just recalled a line she had rehearsed before fear took a better part of her.

Becca and I looked at her in confusion. "What did Mel just say?" Becca muttered under her breath.

"Don’t make me go an extra mile to find out who sent out those invitations, Mel. You had better say the truth before this council now," Sir Kaelric maintained.

"I..."

"Stop stuttering and just say the truth," Becca yelled.

"Shut up, no one appointed you to the school council," Sir Kaelric scolded, and then turned back to Mel.

"If you wouldn’t say the truth, then I’ll find out myself," Sir Kaelric said, moving forward.

Just before he laid his hand on her, she let out a shrill cry. "Please don’t hurt me, I’ll tell you what happened."

"Then speak up. I wasn’t going to be at you, though. I was about to find the truth from your memory," Sir Kaelric said, smirking a little. "And you know you would be punished for lying to the council."

"I sent some of the invitations," she confessed.

"You sent to Alexa and Tricia and some other junior and senior wolves," Sir Kaelric stated. He wasn’t asking.

"Yes, Sir," she replied, her head hung low.

"Who reported this incident to the headmistress without adding your name amongst the organizers? Could it be that you had set all these things up?" Sir Kaelric bombarded Mel with questions, and she started sobbing uncontrollably.

Her eyes were wide open like a frightened cat, and she was stuttering at the same time.

"Tricia was about to report the incident, because her friend was injured and humiliated. I heard her mutter it under her breath, so I told her not to involve me, since I only did her a favour by inviting her.

Aria and Becca had made sure I wasn’t the game master, and they were the major causes of what had happened that night. So she agreed to report the case, excluding me," Mel narrated.

"So I could also say that you initiated the game night, and because you weren’t the game master, you decided to bring chaos," the Luna added.

"No...Ma, I decided to exclude myself from everything that occurred after I was refused from being the game master," Mel answered.

"You should have excused yourself from the game night; it would have made it believable," the headmistress stated.

The headmistress brought out her phone and started to type, and not long after, she stopped; a message lit up our screens.

It was on the school media.

"All those present at the game night are requested to be at the school council room within twenty minutes."

In less than twenty minutes, the council room was filled with students who attended the game night, including Tricia. The only student not around was Alexa, because she was still receiving treatment at the school’s hospital.

"Tricia, you made a report anonymously, stating that the game night was organized to humiliate and bully your friend. You said you were invited for peace reasons and they turned against you," the headmistress said, sparing the pleasantries.

"Yes, ma, I did," she replied calmly.

"But it happened that you weren’t even invited at first. You pleaded with the organizers you claimed to have invited you to humiliate you, to invite you," the Luna stated.

"No, that’s not..." Tricia started to deny, but the Luna interrupted her.

"We have proof, it isn’t just a mere accusation like the one you made."

Tricia looked stunned, locking eyes with Mel, then squinting in a way that screamed "snitch".

"Yes, Alexa wanted to be present at the game night, so she pleaded with me to ask them for an invite. We wanted to be there so that we could resolve our differences, but it turned against us," Tricia defended.

"The doctor in the hospital stated that Alexa had taken a potion that would weaken her and bring out marks on her body even before coming for the game night.

When she noticed that the potion would soon kick off its reaction, she pretended to be drunk and attacked Aria, trying to bring out a response from her so that she could be blamed for whatever happened to her.

But when she noticed Aria wasn’t reacting the way she wanted, she shifted her aggression towards Allison. One way or the other, one student must go for it, and that must include Aria.

You helped her finish up the plan by reporting the incident anonymously. You both think you are smart, right?" The headmistress asked.

"Well, Alexa is suffering for her devious plans. Now you also would be detained for bringing chaos and framing another student," Sir Kaelric added.

"Mel, you are to be suspended. You are doing nothing currently in school grounds, so you have to go home for lying against your fellow student, and for being an accomplice..." the Luna started.

"But ma, I didn’t..." Mel interrupted.

"Don’t you ever dare to interrupt me again," she scolded. "You were an accomplice when you knew the truth and decided to hide it just because you were angry about being refused from being the game master."
