Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Lying

"Thank you, everyone. This is our family matter." Mrs. Miller gave a slight bow to express her gratitude, then followed into the car.

Julian Sinclair placed Moira Young on the car seat. Mrs. Miller had prepared a towel in advance. He wrapped Moira up with it to keep her from moving around.

"Are you cold?" Julian looked at her with concern.

Moira felt a bit dizzy, and her stomach was in terrible pain. She wanted to curl up in discomfort as her stomach churned.

Julian placed his hand on her forehead, and his heart clenched sharply. She had a fever.

"To the hospital!"

The driver broke out in a cold sweat, realizing that anything concerning Moira directly affected Julian’s mood. If Julian was in a bad mood, they wouldn’t dare breathe easily.

They drove to the hospital in tense silence.

Moira was somewhat in and out of consciousness, still trembling. After several simple checks, she lay in the VIP ward with an IV drip administered.

Julian sat by the bedside watching her, his mind adrift as he pondered whether what he was doing was right.

"Uncle..." Moira’s previously peaceful sleeping face twitched suddenly, her brows furrowing as if she had dreamt something terrible.

She instinctively grasped Julian’s hand, feeling his warmth, and only then did her brows relax.

But within seconds, she seemed to wake with discomfort.

"Moira, are you still in pain?" Julian’s worried expression touched Moira’s heart. Usually, seeing Julian would bring her comfort, but after what happened a few hours ago, everything had changed. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

She turned her face away, her tears falling onto the pillow, still unwilling to speak.

"Still mad at me?"

"Uncle has a girlfriend now; he won’t need me anymore." Moira spoke softly, restraining her sobs, "You’re going to be like those people and abandon me, not want me anymore..."

"You will..." Moira buried her head in the blanket, her greatest fear was being abandoned, yet she had this nagging feeling that Julian would eventually leave her.

Julian hadn’t expected Moira to say something like that, so sure of it. Could someone have leaked information?

After she said her piece, Moira noticed Julian had no reaction, which sent her into a panic. She had been waiting for him to comfort her, but he was silent.

She turned over to face him, her expression so forlorn it pulled at the heartstrings.

"Uncle... do you really not want me anymore..." The choked words were difficult to utter. She so desperately hoped Julian would tell her he would never leave her.

But Julian just looked at her, without giving any response.

To Moira, her uncle seemed calm, his heart unmoved. Yet only Julian knew that inside, it felt like a tidal wave, though he didn’t want anyone to know.

The hope in Moira’s eyes gradually faded to gray, her resolve beginning to crumble, the feeling of despair seeping into her bones, making her shiver in fear.

Seeing her like this broke Julian’s heart. He knew he would one day push her away with no hesitation. The reasoning Adrian Grant had laid out was clear, yet he couldn’t bear to be the one to cause her pain now.

After much thought, he finally spoke.

"Silly girl, how could I ever not want you?"

Upon hearing this, the shadow in Moira’s heart finally dissipated. She looked up into Julian’s exquisite and strikingly beautiful eyes, trying to detect any hint of deception.

She gazed for a long time before finally feeling at ease.

"You really won’t leave me?" Moira asked cautiously once more.

Julian’s lips curled into a slight smile, gently patting her head with affection, "No, I won’t."

But only he knew he was lying.
