Chapter 233: Meaningful Family (2)

Because of that mistake, Medeia couldn’t just pull anything out of her Space Pocket without raising questions.

She rolled her eyes. "And what about you? Didn’t you leave yours too?"

"How could I think about a backpack when I was too busy worrying about your grandparents threatening to kill me?" he huffed. "And don’t forget, my future wife didn’t even defend me properly in front of her relatives."

Medeia chuckled and leaned back against the pew, acting like she had no part in what happened.

After a brief pause, Lucian turned to her again. His voice softened. "But ... are you happy?"

Medeia frowned a little, confused by the question. "Happy? What are you talking about? We’re stuck in this freezing church thanks to a damn snowstorm."

So, the chance of Medeia feeling happy in a situation like this had probably dropped to zero.

"You once told me you never really had a family," Lucian said softly. "I know they’re not your real family, but does it really matter? As long as they treat you like you belong, isn’t that enough?"

Medeia stayed quiet for a while, not sure how to answer. Was she happy? Maybe. She wasn’t sure. After all, she had never really felt anything like this before.

What was so special about having a family anyway?

It felt ... nice, somehow. But at the same time, it seemed like such a hassle.

"I don’t know," Medeia finally said, shrugging. "They’re already nagging too much and acting like they can control me, even though we just met. Is that what having a family is like? Annoying?"

And to make things worse, they even tried to get rid of Lucian just because they thought he wasn’t good enough for her. Medeia really didn’t understand.

Why could family decide someone else’s life? Just because they were related, didn’t mean each person shouldn’t have their own choices, right?

Lucian let out a small laugh. "You’re not wrong. Having a family is never easy," he said. "Sometimes, they nag like crazy. Sometimes, they push you to do things you don’t want to do."

He paused for a second, looking like he was remembering something from the past. "But sometimes, they also help you do things you never thought you could."

He gently patted her head. "Behind all the nagging, there’s usually a lot of love. I’m not saying I enjoy the part where they clearly want to kill me," he chuckled, "but I get it. If Sierra suddenly brought home some guy I didn’t know, I’d probably want to skin him too."

Medeia blinked. Now that he mentioned Sierra, didn’t they already have a little family of their own? She hadn’t had experience of having parents before, but at least, in this small family, she could be Sierra’s mother figure.

Sometimes, Medeia found herself complaining too much, especially when Sierra got sick, and she had to watch over her every single second.

But it wasn’t because she hated being a mother. In truth, she nagged because she cared deeply for Sierra. The complaints came from fear — fear of seeing her daughter in pain.

"Family is weird," Medeia confessed quietly. "Honestly, even building a family with my ex-husband was simpler than this."

Back then, it was simple. Either she acted like the obedient wife he wanted or endured his anger in silence.

When he got mad, he just got mad, there were no emotions behind it, no care, no love.

"Simple doesn’t mean good," Lucian said. "And being complicated isn’t always bad." He hesitated for a moment, frowning slightly at the mention of her ex. "Your ex was the worst."

"The absolute worst," Medeia agreed, letting out a small laugh. "Let’s not talk about that demon while we’re literally sitting in God’s house."

Lucian was about to tease her back, but suddenly Eldon’s loud voice echoed throughout the church, making him flinch.

"Hey, blondie! Are you trying to act like a princess or something?!" Eldon shouted. "I’ll count to three, and if you don’t drag your ass over here, I’ll shave that pretty hair of yours!"

Lucian flinched slightly at the threat, instinctively running a hand through his blonde hair as if to protect it. He glanced at Medeia, who was clearly trying not to laugh. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

"Oh, come on," Lucian grumbled under his breath. "Why is everyone so obsessed with my hair lately?"

Medeia gave him a teasing smile. "Maybe because you’re too handsome for your own good."

Lucian sighed but stood up obediently, making his way toward Eldon, Gideon, and Walter, who were busy reinforcing the windows with wooden planks.

As he approached, Eldon pointed at the stack of supplies next to the wall. "Grab those and help us secure the windows. Or are you too delicate for manual labor, pretty boy?"

Lucian let out a heavy sigh but forced a bright smile to stay on his face. "No problem," he said, even though deep down, he wanted to groan. Without another word, he picked up the supplies and got to work, following their instructions without a single complaint.

As much as he hated it, Lucian was willing to do anything as long as it meant staying close to Medeia. No task was too humiliating if it kept him by her side.

While Medeia watched him from across the room, a familiar ding echoed in her mind, followed by a glowing message from the system.

[Hidden Mission Unlocked!]

Medeia nearly groaned. She knew what that meant. Hidden missions were never easy because they always came with unexpected headaches.

[Hidden Mission: Exterminate the King of Worms and Earn Triple Points.]

Her eyes twitched. Of course. Trouble always seemed to find her, and this time, it looked like it would involve something disgusting.

The King of Worms? What the hell was that supposed to be? Some giant mutated worm crawling beneath the city?

"Where am I supposed to find that disgusting creature?" she mumbled under her breath.

However, before Medeia could process the notification, Medeia received a warning. [Warning! Warning!]
