Chapter 123: THE GENERAL COOKS? 2

For a long moment, no one said a word.

The maid’s voice hung in the air like smoke.

"In the kitchen... cooking," Grandmother Mo repeated, slowly lowering her teacup. "My grandson?"

The maid nodded quickly. "Yes, madam. Wearing an apron. He—he told the servants not to interfere. Said he’d handle breakfast himself."

Madame Mo blinked once, as if she’d misheard. "You must be mistaken," she said, though her tone wavered. "Mo Ying doesn’t even pour his own tea."

"I’m certain, madam," the maid insisted. "The servants are gathered outside Lady Lin’s courtyard right now. They... don’t know whether to help or run."

A sharp, incredulous laugh slipped from Mo Lan before she could stop it. "The General in an apron? Has the world lost its balance?"

"Lan!" Grandmother Mo’s voice snapped, but the old woman was already pushing herself to her feet, the scrape of her chair cutting through the tension. "Enough talking. Let’s see this nonsense for ourselves," she said.

With curious expressions, they all stood and made their way toward Lin Xu’s quarters.

Back at Lin Xu’s Quarters

Lin Xu had only just arrived, yet the small house was already full of life. The five maids assigned to her were hardworking and efficient; the courtyard was spotless, and the purple flowers along the walkway had been carefully tended.

When she left Mo Ying’s quarters and returned to her own, she found that several servants had delivered fresh clothes, for her, the children, and Yan Mei. The kids had already changed and were playing happily around the courtyard, while Yan Mei and a few maids set plates on the outdoor table for breakfast. Fuhan had also joined in to help.

"Aunt Yan Mei, why is your face always red when Uncle Fuhan arrives?" Bao Bao asked innocently.

Fuhan, who was just taking a seat across from them, smirked.

Yan Mei froze, the cup in her hand trembling. Her cheeks flushed bright red.

"Bao Bao!" she hissed softly. "Children shouldn’t ask things like that."

Fuhan leaned back in his chair, one arm resting casually over the back. He smiled. "It’s a fair question. Maybe your aunt just can’t help blushing when she sees me."

Yan Mei shot him a sharp glare. "Or maybe some people’s faces turn red when they’re annoyed."

Lin Xu, who had just come out of the side room, shook her head, amused. "If you two keep arguing like this, the children will start copying you."

Bao Bao giggled. "I already am!"

Yan Mei’s eyes went wide. "You—!" She grabbed a napkin and flicked it at the boy, but he laughed and ran off before she could stop him.

Fuhan started to stand as if to chase him, but stopped when Lin Xu gave him a warning look.

"Sit," she said. "You’ll only make it worse."

He grinned and sat back down. "Yes, ma’am." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Smiling, Lin Xu turned and walked toward the kitchen, where she saw Mo Ying chopping beef. She leaned against the doorway, smirking slightly.

It reminded her of the time they had been in Wu Village, how Mo Ying had cooked constantly, teasing her endlessly in the process.

Mo Ying, already aware of her presence, smirked and spoke without turning around. "I know you’re admiring me right now, but I can’t blame you. I have a certain charm that attracts women."

He teased, and Lin Xu just rolled her eyes.

"I said it as a joke. I never imagined you would actually cook for me."

"And why not?" he replied, dropping the knife and turning to face her. "Why can’t I cook for my wife and my children, huh?"

"Again with calling me your wife! I’m not your wife," she said, catching his grin.

"Yet... soon, I will throw you the biggest wedding you’ve ever seen. I’ll make the whole world remember the day we get married—it will be written in history."

Lin Xu folded her hands. "First of all, you have to fulfill your deal. And second... if we do get married, you’ll also be marrying that new concubine of yours."

Her words made Mo Ying smirk. "Is someone sounding jealous?"

Lin Xu crossed her arms and glared at him. "Jealous? Don’t be ridiculous. I’m not jealous."

Mo Ying raised an eyebrow, still smiling. "Not jealous, huh? Are you sure about that?"

"I said I’m not jealous!" she snapped, her cheeks heating with frustration. "And you... you should really stop saying that word around me!"

Mo Ying’s grin widened, clearly enjoying her anger. "Stop saying it? Or stop me from saying it?"

Lin Xu clenched her fists. "I said stop it, that’s all. And you, don’t push your luck!"

"Push my luck?" he repeated softly, stepping closer. "Is that a threat or a warning?"

"I—!" Lin Xu’s words caught in her throat. She took a step back, her anger barely holding her in check. "I—just... you’re impossible!"

Mo Ying tilted his head, his eyes darkening with mischief. "Impossible?" he echoed, and before she could react, he reached out and grabbed her hand.

"Let go!" she hissed, struggling, but he didn’t let go. Instead, he pulled her closer, his other hand brushing a strand of hair from her face.

Lin Xu’s heart raced. "Mo Ying! Stop it!"

But he didn’t stop. He leaned in, and before she could push him away, his lips pressed against hers in a bold, unexpected kiss.

For a moment, Lin Xu froze, shocked. Her hands pressed against his chest, pushing, trying to keep her composure, but her anger melted into something else.

When he finally pulled back slightly, just enough to see her face, Mo Ying whispered, his usual teasing grin returning, "There... that’s my warning."

Lin Xu’s face was red, her eyes blazing. "You... you really are impossible!" she shouted ready to leave the kitchen, Mo ying then said suddenly, "you are very smart Lin xu, there will be a banquet soon, I’m sure you’ll be able to fully get rid of chu ming."

Lin Xu stood frozen for a moment, hearing Mo Ying’s words. She clenched her fist but she finally turned and left the kitchen, slamming the door lightly behind her.

Mo Ying laughed softly, shaking his head in amusement at how flustered she had been. "Miss feisty," he muttered, smiling to himself.

After a little while, he started bringing out the dishes, one by one, with the help of his maids. The courtyard smelled wonderful as the plates were set on the table. Yan Mei, Lin Xu, Fuhan, and the children were already seated, waiting patiently.

Finally, Mo Ying arrived at the table, carrying the last few dishes. "Breakfast is ready," he announced with a grin.

Mo Yiling and Mo Boa clapped their hands. "Papa! It smells so good! We missed your cooking!"

Mo Ying chuckled, setting the food down. He glanced at Mo Yuen, who was sitting quietly, not saying a word.

Mo Ying picked up a special bowl and carefully placed it in front of Mo Yuen. "This is a special meal I made just for you, Yuen," he said softly. "enjoy."

Mo Yuen stared at the bowl for a moment. The food looked delicious. He looked at his mother, then back at Mo Ying, and quietly said, "Thank you."

He picked up his spoon and tasted it. His eyes lit up immediately. With a small, happy smile, he finished the meal in one go.

Mo Ying laughed, sitting down beside Lin Xu, who couldn’t help but smile as she watched her son. He looked so much like Mo Ying, she thought, her heart swelling with love.

Just as the warm, quiet moment settled, the sharp voice of Grandmother Mo rang out from the courtyard.

"Mo—Mo Ying? What is the meaning of this?"

The laughter and smiles froze for a second as everyone turned toward the sound of her voice.
