Chapter 1967: Chapter 2030: Mental Illness

After finding out where Chu Nan’s home is, Li Yifei directly took her there, only to realize that Chu Nan’s home was in a resettlement building in the suburbs. The neighborhood wasn’t particularly bad, but it was full of villagers from nearby who had been relocated to the building, so it appeared somewhat dirty and chaotic, and the property management wasn’t great. He drove the car directly to the building, where Chu Nan once again thanked them. Chu Xiaoyao waved her hand and said, "Goodbye, Sister Chu Nan. You can come find me if you feel bored in the future."

Chu Nan pursed her lips and smiled lightly, nodding softly, and said, "I will. Thank you both for today."

Li Yifei waved his hand, indicating that it was unnecessary, but while on the road earlier, Chu Nan had insisted on writing an IOU, even including the money for the antiques. Li Yifei thought that this girl was quite a good person; she was the same age as Chu Xiaoyao and had been navigating society for so many years without losing certain principles she should hold onto. As for the previous Blackmail Incident, Li Yifei had already forgiven her; at least under the pressure from Brother Lil and his group, she didn’t choose to extort Chu Xiaoyao. So this favor, Li Yifei had to help, and if he didn’t, Chu Xiaoyao wouldn’t agree either.

The car slowly turned around. Chu Xiaoyao hugged Li Yifei’s neck from the back seat, leaned forward, and gave him a kiss, saying, "Thank you, honey."

"Why are you thanking me?" Li Yifei asked.

"Of course, I have to thank you. If you hadn’t stepped in, I wouldn’t have been able to fight those thugs," Chu Xiaoyao said.

"Haha, there’s no need for thanks between you and me. Besides, her character is quite good, worth helping. Otherwise, there’s a chance she might really be forced to sell herself by that Brother Lil, and that would be a complete ruin," Li Yifei said.

Chu Xiaoyao nodded forcefully in agreement, saying, "Those people are despicable too. Enough, let’s not mention them. I’ve already told Sister Chu Nan that if they dare to harass her again, I’ll bring our security team over to take them apart."

"Okay, I approve of this plan." Li Yifei nodded with a smile.

Suddenly, Chu Xiaoyao said, "Oh right, why were you constantly looking at Sister Chu Nan in the rearview mirror just now, honey? You’re not interested in her, are you?"

Screech, Li Yifei almost stepped on the brakes, glaring at Chu Xiaoyao through the rearview mirror, "What are you talking about? I was keeping an eye on her!"

"Keeping an eye?" Chu Xiaoyao’s eyes darted around, suddenly realizing, lightly hitting Li Yifei with her fist. "Naughty husband, what are you thinking? I’m straight, how could I have that kind of relationship with her? I like..."

"Like what of mine?" Li Yifei asked with a mischievous smile.

"Like your big..." Chu Xiaoyao said with infinite shyness.

"Hurry up, big what?"

"Big face!" As soon as Chu Xiaoyao finished speaking, she giggled to herself. Li Yifei also chuckled and said, "Alright, sit properly, we’re going home now."

"Wait a minute." Just as Chu Xiaoyao was about to nod, she suddenly turned her head to look behind and shouted, "Honey, Sister Chu Nan is chasing after us again."

Li Yifei stopped the car and saw Chu Nan running over in a panic. He rolled down the car window and heard her shout, "Mr. Li, Xiaoyao, please help me, my dad is having an episode, can you help me take him to the hospital?"

Li Yifei and Chu Xiaoyao knew that Chu Nan’s father was in poor health. She had accrued high-interest debts because of her father’s illness, and dropping out of high school was also due to this reason, making everyone feel sympathy for her. Upon hearing, Chu Xiaoyao quickly opened the car door and ran out, asking, "Where’s Uncle?"

"At home, he suddenly had an episode, Mr. Li, please help me restrain him," Chu Nan pleaded.

Li Yifei unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car, still puzzled about what kind of illness Chu Nan’s father had, needing restraint. Following her upstairs, Li Yifei understood what her father’s illness was.

They saw Chu Nan’s father standing on the balcony, one leg already over the edge, with half his body hanging outside. He was holding a kitchen knife in his hand, wearing only a pair of big shorts, his body thin and trembling. He looked at Li Yifei and the others with terror, shouting, "Don’t come over, if any of you come closer, I’ll hack you to death!"

It was the first time Chu Xiaoyao encountered someone with a mental illness, and she wasn’t mentally prepared, subconsciously taking two steps back to hide beside Li Yifei. Chu Nan and her mother didn’t dare to approach either, continuously comforting him, saying no one was harming him.

It turned out that Chu Nan’s father suffered from a mental illness. Years ago, while working out of province, he only returned once or twice a year. During one visit, he fell from the third floor, causing some brain injury. After recovering, he developed this condition. When not experiencing an episode, he was like a normal person, but during an episode, he became extremely aggressive, always thinking someone wanted to harm or kill him, and he didn’t recognize anyone, treating everyone as his enemy.

When he had his first episode, he nearly beat Chu Nan’s mother to death; fortunately, neighbors came to help, holding him down and taking him to the hospital. However, the chances of curing this illness were very low; during an episode, he would become a complete patient, yet appeared normal when not sick. Despite this, they continued treating him, without anyone giving up. They had borrowed money initially to take him to better hospitals for treatment, and the daily medication cost was substantial. The money needed for all this depended heavily on the work of Chu Nan and her mother. Chu Nan’s mother had a low-paying job, only earning fifteen hundred a month, so most of the medical expenses relied on Chu Nan’s earnings.

Sometimes, he wouldn’t have an episode for half a year, but other times it would happen once a month; sometimes lasting half a day, sometimes several days. Because of his aggression, initially, neighbors would come to help, but after being hurt during episodes, eventually, no one dared to come.

At this moment, Chu Nan’s father was full of aggression; as soon as he saw strangers enter the house, he held a kitchen knife to his chest and shouted, "You monsters, stay away, or I’ll kill you!"

Chu Nan, who hadn’t cried even when Brother Lil and others threatened him, was now in tears, pleading with her father, "Dad, it’s us! It’s me and mom. We’re not monsters, and no one at home wants to harm you. Please come down!"

"Old Chu, I’m begging you, stop going crazy. You’ve already turned this house into such a mess. Can’t you just let us have some peace?" Chu Nan’s mother also cried.

Chu Xiaoyao understood the situation, biting her lip, feeling uncomfortable. She thought to herself, no wonder Chu Nan suddenly stopped going to school. Although her studies weren’t that good, getting into college should have been easy for her. It really is a pity she quit that way, but it turns out this happened at home.

Chu Xiaoyao tugged on Li Yifei’s sleeve. Li Yifei glanced at her and understood her plea, gently nodding and patting her hand, indicating that she needn’t worry.

"Let me have a word with Uncle," Li Yifei gently pushed Chu Nan aside and stepped forward. When Chu Nan’s mother saw him approach, she quickly stopped him, saying, "Young man, don’t go over there; Old Chu has a knife. You might get hurt."

"It’s alright; I can handle it. Let me see if I can talk Uncle down." Li Yifei replied.

"No, this isn’t a joke. That kitchen knife is very sharp!" Chu Nan’s mother insisted.

But Chu Nan, recalling Li Yifei’s remarkable skills, suddenly felt a glimmer of hope and said, "Mom, let’s let Mr. Li try."

"Yes, Auntie, my husband has experience with these things," Chu Xiaoyao added. Only then did Chu Nan’s mother reluctantly step aside, though she still held a mop handle, ready to assist Li Yifei at any moment.

Those who have long been ill in bed lack filial children, and those who have been ill for a long time lack good people. Both Chu Nan’s mother and Chu Nan were very heartbroken by his illness, but once he has an episode, he doesn’t see anyone, and there’s no way to be heartbroken. Over the years, the mother and daughter have suffered a lot, but after all, it’s their father, so they can’t ignore him.

As Li Yifei stepped forward, Chu Nan’s father frantically waved his kitchen knife, his eyes turning fierce, loudly shouting, "You’re a devil! I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill you, you devil!"

"Watch out!" the three women behind quickly reminded.

Li Yifei, however, waved them off. Although Chu Nan’s father was speaking fiercely, he wasn’t making any moves, nor did he rush forward. If he really charged, it would actually be easier, as Li Yifei could easily subdue him.

Now just three meters away, Li Yifei intended to take two more steps forward when Chu Nan’s father suddenly made a move that shocked everyone; he turned abruptly, preparing to step out with his other leg.

"Dad!"

"Old Chu!"

"No!"

The three women instantly shouted. Li Yifei was a bit anxious too, but fortunately, the other didn’t really jump out, bringing some relief to Li Yifei. When someone with a mental illness has an episode, it’s best not to agitate them. But suddenly, Li Yifei shouted loudly, surprising not only the three women behind but also stopping Chu Nan’s father on the balcony for a moment.

Taking advantage of this pause, Li Yifei sprang into action. His body seemed to vanish from where he was, and in the next instant, he appeared at the balcony edge, grabbing Chu Nan’s father’s arm and forcefully pulling him back.

Chu Nan’s father, startled, flailed his arm, the sharp kitchen knife swinging toward Li Yifei.

Chu Nan and her mother’s hearts were in their throats, unable to even shout a warning, while Chu Xiaoyao watched wide-eyed with tension.

Li Yifei twisted his body, gently knocking Chu Nan’s father’s arm aside with his other hand, seizing his wrist. With a shake, the kitchen knife slipped from Chu Nan’s father’s grip, clattering onto the balcony, as Li Yifei’s arms pulled Chu Nan’s father completely back. With a twist, the man found his joints locked by Li Yifei’s hold.

Held like this, Chu Nan’s father couldn’t harm himself or break free, no matter how he struggled. Li Yifei’s strength was so great, not even an ox could escape his grip.

"Phew!" Seeing Li Yifei successfully gain control over the man, the three women exhaled in relief simultaneously.
