Chapter 359: Mirage Reunion

I wondered what Bradon was doing and if the two of them just continued on where they had left off after I practically ran out of the room. Now that my sister had returned, it felt like there was no room for me anymore. I felt like no one wanted or needed me anymore and once again I was reminded of the fact that perhaps I was nothing more than a spare and a stand-in for my sister. The only person who wanted me and was a little dependent on me was Desmond, with his twisted idea of how to incorporate me into his grand scheme.

"I guess it might rain all night," I mumbled to myself. The sound of the rain beating down echoed all around me to the extent that I could barely hear myself. Strangely, despite the loud sound of the wind and rain, I managed to find some peace and solace. I leaned back and let out a loud sigh before closing my eyes as if it would help erase everything from my mind. The only relief to the pain was the fact that I knew that I would not be disturbed and until I felt like I was strong enough to face reality again, I could rest here.

No one is ever going to find me here...

...

It was dark and I felt so utterly alone as I breathed in the damp and heavy air. Suddenly, I felt the sensation of someone patting my shoulder. Feeling surprised at the sudden appearance of someone by my side, I turned around and with even greater shock, saw Anthony.

"What are you doing here?" I asked without hiding my shock at his unexpected and sudden appearance.

In response to my question, Anthony only smiled before slowly sinking himself down to sit right next to me. I didn’t know what to say or how to react, because I hadn’t expected him to find me here. I just kept on staring at him as I wondered if this was really happening. Anthony never replied to my question, but he did offer me a warm smile that made my heart skip a dangerous beat in my chest. I hadn’t realized up until the very moment that he appeared, that deep down I had been hoping and desperately praying that perhaps one day Anthony would find me here. Perhaps deep down I had always wished that if I turned up at the place where we spent time together often enough, one miraculous day Anthony might find me. That must have been the reason why I always made a private escape back to that place under the bridge whenever I felt like I had nowhere else to run to and no one to turn to. I found myself smiling like a fool and I realized that my dream must have come true because Anthony was right by my side.

"I’m so happy that you’re here," I blurted out before I could stop myself.

"Why are you crying? If you’re happy to see me here, you shouldn’t be crying anymore," Anthony said before showing me a comforting smile. In the next moment, I felt his soft and warm fingertips grazing the side of my cheek as he brushed away my tears.

"Where have you been all this time? Did something happen? You know, I tried so hard to get in touch with you and I did my best to look for you everywhere," I said as I reached up to capture his hand in mine. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

For some strange reason, all Anthony did was look at me with a troubled expression on his face as if there was something that he wanted to say but couldn’t bring himself to. I waited patiently as my heart raced in my chest for him to say something. At that point, I felt that it would be good enough for me for him to say anything. Even if he did not give me the answers to my questions or any explanation to his prolonged disappearance, I felt that it would be good enough for me to just hear him say something.

"Do you remember the last time that we came here together? Back then, it was raining so hard just like this," I said as I began reminiscing about the past.

The memories that were conjured up in my mind felt so alive and real that they brought a smile to my lips. I finally felt so happy, but at the same time there was a heavy feeling in my heart that felt slightly painful. The nagging feeling in the back of my mind told me that something wasn’t right, but I was so thrilled to see Anthony again that I willingly let myself ignore it all.

"I’m sorry, I’m in such a messy state," I said as I broke eye contact and looked away. I quickly brought my hands to wipe the tears away from my face. It was such a shame that he had to see me in such a state after not seeing each other for many years. This wasn’t how I expected our long-awaited reunion to take place.

"Thank you for coming to find me. Thank you for keeping your promise," I thanked him wholeheartedly as I turned back to stare deeply into his beautiful eyes. For a moment, I thought that his eyes were filled with sorrow that he couldn’t bring himself to express in words. I wondered what was wrong, but before I could bring myself to ask him directly, it seemed like Anthony was trying to say something.

"Listen, if it’s too hard for you to explain, you don’t need to say anything. I’m just very happy to see you again," I confessed softly as I suddenly felt very shy.

The atmosphere that engulfed us felt very familiar to back then and I knew very well what was going to happen next. Anthony must have felt it as well because I could tell that we were thinking of the same thing.
