Chapter 347: Crossroads

"You know, if there’s anything that is bothering you or worrying you, you can always let me know. I might not be the best advisor, and I might not be able to solve all of your problems, but at least I can lend you an ear," she said before offering a sweet smile.

"What do you think should happen?" I asked before I could stop myself.

"What do you mean?" Diana asked as she cocked her head slightly to the side in wonder. That was when I realized that my question didn’t seem to make sense and was totally out of context. I never got around to disclose my plan to collaborate with Desmond so that he would help me get my revenge on my own parents. I took in a deep breath as I tried to steady my rattling nerves.

"What is it?" Diana asked after seeing me pause and fall silent for a moment.

"I can’t forgive them, and I’m not sure that I feel sorry about how I feel..." I confessed truthfully.

"Who are you referring to?" Diana asked as her brows drew together in a frown. I didn’t like seeing such an expression on my sister’s face, and for a moment, I began wondering what I would do if Diana was against my plan.

"Our parents. I don’t think I can bring myself to forgive them for all the stuff they’ve done. Also, this might not just be about myself, but what they are doing and what they’ve been doing along with the other nobles is just wrong," I said while disliking how benevolent I sounded.

"What do you mean? It’s not like any of this is new to you. I mean, I know that they were unkind to you and all that, but everything else that they’ve done isn’t exactly new, and they’re not the only people who are doing it," Diana said before shrugging her shoulders. Before I left the country, I might have thought the same way that she did. It wasn’t like our family was any different from any of the other noble families that took advantage of their status in the country and the close ties to the royal family. However, just because everybody else was doing it didn’t make it right.

"It doesn’t change the fact that it’s wrong. Just because there are other nobles doing the same thing, it doesn’t make it right. If you think that there must be equality for all, that everyone should just stop it," I said before clenching my teeth tightly as I stared directly at my sister.

"So what are you going to do? You’re going to ask your dear ex-boyfriend to ruin your family along with all the other noble families just so that you can punish our parents for what they’ve done to you?" Diana asked with an incredulous look on her face as if my idea was the most ridiculous one she had ever heard.

"Do you think I’m crazy?" I asked her that question just to fulfill my curiosity. I didn’t think that my question was a serious sounding one, but Diana definitely took her time to ponder the answer to my question. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

"No, I don’t think that you’re crazy," Diana finally replied before letting out a soft sigh.

"Really?" I asked in disbelief.

"I have to say that I never ever attempted to do the same thing as you want to, but then I guess I’ve never been that righteous to begin with," Diana said before letting out a liberating laugh.

"You’re not against it?" I asked, but I didn’t dare to get my hopes up.

"Why would I ever be against it? It’s up to you what you want to do. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t do the same thing, but at the same time, I’m never going to go as far as to protect them from you either. Honestly, I’m not even bothered," Diana said, sounding quite bored.

"So, about what I was asking you before, I was wondering what should happen after all of this is over. I mean, after Desmond brings down our family and I guess most of the other noble families as well and restructure the country, and also after Anthony is back. What should I do then?" I asked before lapsing into silence. For a moment, I felt so unsure about what I wanted. It felt like I was at a crossroad, and I wasn’t sure where each path would lead me. I realized that I was scared to make a decision because I wasn’t certain if I could bear to live with the consequences that came along with it. I just kept on standing at the crossroad as I hesitated to make a move.

"Why are you asking me? I’m sure that you already have something in mind," Diana replied, and I was reminded that she knew me very well. At least, that was what things were supposed to be like. I was supposed to know what I wanted, and I wasn’t supposed to be hesitating like this.

"You know, I’m thinking that when everything is over and done with, that I should go back to where I came from," I said softly and slowly while trying to gauge my sister’s reaction at the same time. Diana looked at me with a blank look on her face before blinking her eyes a couple of times as if my words couldn’t sink into her skull.

"What do you mean by that? I think you lost me there for a second," she said before pressing her lips into a thin line. I could tell from her reaction that she didn’t like what she was hearing rather than not understanding the meaning behind my words.

"Well, you see..." I began before trailing off.

"What do you mean when you say you should go back to where you came from? This country is your home," Diana said, and her voice was stern.

"I know that I was born here and that I also grew up here, but does that really make this place my home?" I asked in wonder.

"Stop thinking and spouting all of this nonsense! You can’t leave this country. I’m not going to let you!" Diana yelled quite loudly.
