Chapter 331: Cruel Twist of Fate

Wanting to let go of my sister so that I could look into her face, I was first overwhelmed by the purest sense of joy just at the sight of her face. I could tell that Diana also felt emotional, and it looked like she was on the verge of crying. We both smiled at each other before giggling as if we were young little girls planning something mischievous for the upcoming days of the holidays. Although I knew that we needed to talk about so many things, at that moment no words came to mind, and I was just happy to rejoice in our reunion.

"I’m very happy to see you again," Diana said before she smiled sweetly at me.

We held each other’s hands tightly as if we couldn’t bear to be apart from each other again. I figured that if Desmond could issue a royal pardon for me, then it probably wouldn’t stretch beyond his power to bring Diana back while safeguarding her from our parents or whatever interference that could adversely impact her life. However, I also knew that if Desmond made the decision to bring her back, that meant two things. Firstly, Desmond would have something to gain for helping Diana reunite with me. I wasn’t naive enough to believe that he was doing this purely to get on my good side or to win my favor. Secondly, I realized that for his plan to materialize, Diana must also have the desire to come back home.

I took a proper look at my sister’s face as I studied the changes that I could physically see in her features. It seemed that she had lost weight, although Diana had always been a little bit on the skinnier side. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that she had dark circles under her eyes or that her face looked like it had lost some life or gained a couple of years, but even with the help of makeup, I could tell that my sister didn’t look as vibrant and lively as she used to. Suddenly, I felt very worried and uncertain for my sister’s well-being, and I wondered what exactly she had been through. Perhaps the thought that my sister was living the time of her life with the man of her dreams wasn’t something that happened in reality. I couldn’t stop staring at her face as those thoughts ran through my head. It was Diana who first broke our embrace and looked away from me while I was lost in my thoughts.

"Oh... Anthony! It’s good to see you again. Hopefully, you’ve been taking good care of my sister," Diana said as she turned to direct her attention towards Bradon.

My body stiffened in place as I watched the scene unfolding in front of me. My sister approached Bradon before she reached out and placed a hand on his arm before smiling familiarly up at him. It wasn’t until I heard Diana call Bradon by Anthony’s name that I realized that my sister didn’t know the truth, that Bradon had taken his brother’s place and married me instead. I had no idea why that possibility slipped my mind. I glanced over at Desmond, who had an amused expression on his face, and I realized that Desmond had not bothered to break the news to my sister.

Perhaps that was for the better because it gave me the opportunity to do the honors of telling my sister the truth of what had happened after I took her place at her wedding. Diana must have always been under the impression that I was happily married to the man that I had always loved. After all, she probably ran off with the love of her life with a peace of mind that she was giving up her place so that her only sister could marry the love of her life as well.

However, that wasn’t the way that things played out, and Diana was clearly left in the dark. Bradon’s blue gaze shifted to rest on my face as if he was asking me about how he should react. I shook my head slowly from side to side as I averted my eyes from his. I was certain that Bradon understood my silent message when he greeted Diana while speaking as if he was Anthony.

"It’s good to see you again. I trust that you’ve been well," Bradon replied kindly while sounding just like the good-natured Anthony.

The two of them exchanged some polite greetings that I felt sounded too natural for my liking. I felt my heart clench in my chest as I looked at the two of them interacting so casually, while I wondered what exactly I was supposed to be feeling. Everything overwhelmed me at once, and my emotions and mind were a mess. Although my initial reaction of seeing my sister was nothing but extreme happiness, my second wave of emotions was too complex for me to understand, and for a moment, I wasn’t certain if it was better for my sister to return in this way. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"This should help solve your problem," Desmond said softly to me as he came to stand right by my side.

Instead of responding to him openly, I turned and glared up directly into his eyes. He probably knew that this kind of solution was going to bring about another set of problems for me, but I doubted that he truly understood how troublesome his meddling was this time around. I wanted to shout and scream and take my frustrations out on Desmond, but I quickly realized that I had bigger problems to deal with. I looked at Diana chatting gleefully with Bradon as she continued making the mistake of mistaking him for his younger brother, while I wondered how exactly I was supposed to break the news to my sister.

How do I even begin to tell her that I didn’t end up marrying Anthony just like she had planned and that Anthony had also been swapped out and replaced by Bradon instead? Worst of all, what would Diana think about all this?
