Substitute Wife for the Mafia King R18-Chapter 299: Plans for Me
The celebration held in the evening ended with a spectacular display of fireworks. Despite the budget cut, it seemed that Desmond was kind enough to ensure that there would be firework displays in many major cities across the country so that everyone could feel the celebratory vibe of his coronation. I personally thought it was a good choice that he decided to cut down on the decoration and the flowers while also shortening the celebration from a whole seven days to only three.
“The fireworks look like flowers...” I murmured to myself as I kept on staring upwards into the sky.
The fireworks decorated the sky like large flowers blooming in a dark field. Its vibrant colors sparkling and dancing as if it were alive. I felt Bradon’s arm tightened around my waist as he pulled me closer. When I looked up at his face, I thought that he looked quite concerned as if he was worrying about something important. Unlike the other people around us, Bradon didn’t seem to be enjoying even a speck of the celebration.
“Is something the matter?” I asked as I turned to get a closer look at his face.
“It’s nothing. Stay close by my side,” he replied without looking at me.
I wasn’t sure why Bradon felt so on edge, but I figured that interrogating him wouldn’t lead me to any answers either. Sometimes I did wish that he would relax and that we could enjoy the celebration together. As if Bradon could have anticipated that it was going to happen, one of Desmond’s butlers approached us and told us that we had been summoned by the new king.
...
“Do you know what is the first royal command that I have in mind, now that I’ve become king?” Desmond asked as he stared directly at me.
The way my heart skipped in my chest told me that I expected that whatever his first royal command was going to be that it had something to do with me.
This isn’t going to be good...
“Congratulations on becoming king,” I decided to congratulate him rather than answer his question.
“Thank you, but it wasn’t like we didn’t see it coming. I mean, I was born for this,” he said with a soft laugh.
I smiled and nodded a little in agreement because I thought that what he said was spot on. Since he was born, everyone knew that if nothing went wrong, the day would come when he would become king.
“So, what is it that you have in mind?” I ask straightforwardly.
Desmond’s words made me feel curious yet uncertain at the same time. One glance to my side at Bradon’s face told me that he was probably feeling the same thing. Although it was just my gut feeling, I had to say that it felt like the moment when you could see dark clouds forming in the sky at a distance and you know that it’s just a matter of time before the wind would carry the clouds your way, and then there would be an unavoidable heavy storm.
“My first mission as king is to bring my one true love back to this country, where she belongs. That’s right, my first mission is to bring you back, Dahlia,” Desmond announced with brimming confidence.
I was quite certain that he was just playing around when he referred to me as his ‘one true love’ and that wasn’t the most important thing that I needed to wrap my head around right at that moment. My return would definitely be shocking and cause displeasure for so many people who were against my relationship with Desmond.
“B-Bring me back?” I asked while stuttering.
“Don’t even think about it...” Brandon warned immediately.
I could tell that he was dead set against Desmond’s idea while I wasn’t quite sure what exactly Desmond was suggesting.
“It’s time for you to come back to this country. It’s time that I bring Dahlia back, officially. Not just as your sister, but you should be back here as yourself,” Desmond explained with a sense of desperation as if he was pleading for me to return home.
Returning back to this country as myself?
He was right that although I was physically here, I was here under my sister’s name. Dahlia wasn’t supposed to be in the country and the public didn’t know that I was back.
“It’s not safe. You can’t do something like that right now when you just ascended to the throne,” Bradon objected bluntly.
“Relax. It’s not like I don’t know that. She’ll be guarded at all times. I’ll make sure that she has enough bodyguards. You know that I would never put Dahlia’s safety at risk,” Desmond replied as he tried to calm Bradon down.
While I agreed that my official return to the country would cause quite a stir, I also thought that Bradon was overreacting. Although a handful of people may have a serious grudge against me such as Daphne’s case, I couldn’t imagine anyone actually going out of their way to cause me harm. On top of that, I was sure that my relationship with Desmond could shield me completely from harm now that he was king and not just the crown prince. Unlike that time before, his father had passed away and that meant that Desmond had absolute power and there wasn’t anyone above him anymore.
“Let’s go,” Bradon said to me coldly as he stood up from his seat while pulling me up by the arm along with him.
I didn’t want to take sides, but I had to say that even I thought that Bradon was overreacting.
“Let’s stay and hear what Desmond has to say. We can’t put this off forever because I’ve already agreed to help pose as his girlfriend,” I told Bradon I placed a reassuring hand on his arm.
Bradon turned to me with a scowl on his face and I almost flinched.
“She’s right, stay calm and listen. Why don’t you take a seat for now?” Desmond suggested with a pleased smile.
“I think I will be safe enough. It’s not like that time, because I can’t think of anyone who would harm me right now,” I said as I kept my eyes on Bradon’s face which had by that time transformed into a cold mask.
