Chapter 68: Home date(2)

Kyle didn’t have anything fancy in mind when he began cooking, since he didn’t know how to prepare a grand feast.

Having lived alone for quite some time, he had created a few dishes of his own and mastered a handful of existing ones. Because of that, he knew he wouldn’t embarrass himself.

He was currently beating eggs in a small bowl with a whisk that looked almost new, which made him ask, "You don’t cook regularly, do you?"

Veronica, who had been pretending to read something on her phone, looked up and hummed, "I’m always busy with work, so I never get the chance to cook anything."

Kyle smiled softly. "So this is your precious day off after weeks of work, and you’re spending it with me."

Veronica shrugged. "Believe it or not, your company is far better than me being alone. Usually, when I have nothing to do, my mind starts to overthink, and that leads to disaster."

Kyle wanted to ask about her family, since he hadn’t seen a single picture of her or anyone else in the house. Only legendary figures and artistic pieces hung on the walls.

However, remembering her reaction the last time he brought up her family, he stopped himself.

"How did it go with your brother?" Veronica asked, switching the topic.

Kyle slowly poured the beaten eggs into the pan as he replied, "He came, gave me some cash to spend, and left. It has always been like that."

"And do you mind being supported by him?" Veronica asked, leaning forward.

Kyle took a moment, his gaze drifting away before he said, "It’s not about pride or anything... more like I feel bad being a burden. I mean, I’ve already hit my twenties, and yet I don’t have any source of income except for the few part-time jobs I pick up from time to time."

Kyle had begun to trust Veronica enough to share how he truly felt about his situation with his family.

The silver-haired woman hummed before muttering, "You can always rely on me if things become hard."

Kyle paused, then gave a wry smile. "That sounded so bad..."

Veronica crossed her arms, her lips curving into a teasing smile as she said, "I meant it, though. I can be your sugar mommy."

Kyle nearly spilled the food from the pan at those words. Shooting her a glare, he said, "Stop saying things like that, or..."

"Or...?" Veronica’s eyes narrowed.

Kyle’s lips suddenly curled into a mischievous smile. "Or I might get tempted to let you spoil me."

Veronica was taken aback. A sudden image flashed through her mind, Kyle being spoiled by her, her holding all the control, and her face instantly grew warm.

Kyle chuckled at her reaction. "You’re not winning this game, Miss. I have very thick skin."

Veronica grumbled and dropped her head onto the table. "Cheater..."

Shaking his head slightly, Kyle continued cooking.

Just then, Veronica seemed to remember something. Once her embarrassment faded, she said, "I had a warning to give you about Ethan."

Kyle froze. This time, he wasn’t pretending. Humming lightly, he urged her to continue.

Veronica went on, "As you know, there aren’t many Nightwalkers, especially in small towns. In a situation like this, the way Amanda has been acting around Ethan lately... it might backfire on her."

Kyle frowned. "What do you mean?"

Veronica explained calmly, "It’s a very common practice to send a doubtful or untrusting member of a team on solo missions with the captain, so they can understand the captain’s value. Amanda has been showing signs of distrusting Ethan, and if this continues, she’ll be made to spend even more time with him."

Kyle clicked his tongue. "That dude is a total creep. You know that. How does someone like him even become a captain?" 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

Veronica sighed. "I don’t disagree with you, Kyle. But at the training camp, Ethan ranked in top three overall. He could have easily taken a position in Fortis if he wanted to, but many don’t know he chose to stay in Fairmont."

Kyle growled, "Because of Amanda?"

Veronica shook her head with a sigh. "He doesn’t like her, Kyle. He’s just pursuing her because of family pressure." Lowering her eyes, she added, "That... creep is obsessed with someone else. I’ve seen with my own eyes how far he can go to keep her protected and out of trouble."

Kyle’s lips parted in shock. "Don’t tell me... it’s you."

Veronica glanced at him faintly. There was panic and concern in his eyes, and it genuinely made her a little happy.

"What if it is me?" she teased.

Kyle frowned. "Then I’ll beat the stalker out of that asshole. People like him should lock themselves up and never show their faces."

Veronica was practically humming in delight. It wasn’t just Amanda he was concerned about, he held her in just as high regard.

Deciding not to tease him any further, she said, "It’s not me, but Layena. You know her, right?"

Kyle nodded, his shoulders finally easing as he said, "Really? He stayed here just because of her? But what about Layena? You said she’s a great sorceress too. Then why stay here and not go to Fortis?"

Veronica shrugged. "She was never offered a place. I’m not completely sure, but someone seems to be limiting her growth. And that person is close enough to headquarters that we can’t do anything about it."

Kyle hummed in surprise. "You guys are dealing with such dirty politics when you should be focusing on protecting civilians."

Veronica let out a dry chuckle. "That’s human nature. Once the initial panic settles and things come under control, people start prioritizing personal gain over what once mattered most."

Kyle sighed and shook his head. It was better that he wasn’t a part of that mess.

He then said, "Well, the food’s ready. Let’s eat before you decide whether this left any impression or not."
