Starting With SSS-rank: I Get A New Skill Every Livestream-Chapter 42: Realisation
Kyle’s mind went numb when he read those words.
There was no doubt about it. The system was talking about Amanda.
Amanda... was a Nightwalker?
His eyes widened as Kyle asked, ’System... you can’t be serious, are you?’
[Host, the target was radiating Genesis when she lost control of her emotions. There is no uncertainty. Target Amanda is a Nightwalker.]
Kyle fell silent. His gaze lowered, his irises shifting restlessly.
Amanda... was also part of the Aether world?
They had been together for so long, yet he had never noticed anything in her behavior that would make him suspect she was involved with such a hidden side of reality. But then again, Kyle himself had only learned about it a few days ago.
His brows slowly drew together as he stepped into his room.
Veronica was sitting on the chair, her fingers interlaced on her thighs while her eyes stared blankly at the ceiling.
His presence made her turn toward him.
"Did something happen?" she asked.
Kyle didn’t answer her question. Instead, he asked one of his own.
"Veronica... you said the headquarters in this town operates under your authority?"
The silver-haired woman blinked in surprise before nodding.
"Yes... but why do you ask?"
Kyle continued, "Then... do you know an officer named Amanda Maylith?"
Veronica froze in her seat, her eyes widening slightly.
This time, Kyle didn’t need the system to tell that Veronica was hiding something.
"So... it’s true." His voice turned flat. "Amanda is a Nightwalker, isn’t she? And despite knowing that, and possibly even the reason behind our breakup, you stayed silent."
Veronica shrank slightly into her chair. "I wasn’t allowed to reveal another officer’s identity."
Kyle looked at her blankly. "You’ve already broken so many rules. Why not one more?"
Planting a hand on his forehead, he muttered, "That means... the reason she became distant from me over the past six months, the reason she couldn’t tell me what she was busy with... it was this?"
He turned his head toward the silver-haired woman again.
"And tell me something else. Ethan Lockhart... is he a Nightwalker too?"
Veronica pressed her lips together before slowly nodding.
The realization struck Kyle like a sharp jab to the back of his neck.
So that was it.
The reason Amanda would suddenly leave his side without explanation, why she was always busy, even on her birthday, why she never showed him the messages she received, and why Ethan was always around.
She had been protecting her identity as a Nightwalker.
"I need to go after her—"
"Wait, Kyle!" Veronica suddenly stood up and grabbed his arm.
Kyle turned with a frown, only to hear her say, "And what will you tell her? That you know about her secret role as a public guardian? And how exactly did you find out? Are you willing to reveal your own secret too?"
Kyle nodded. "Yes, I will. I have already hurt her enough because I believed she was cheating on me. If revealing my secret can at least clear that misunderstanding—"
"You need to understand something, Kyle," Veronica interrupted.
"There is a reason Amanda had to keep her identity a secret from you, even though she was desperate not to lose you."
Kyle paused. His eyes narrowed, but he remained silent.
Veronica continued, "She is currently in a phase of her career where she is constantly being monitored. If the two of you get back together, you will fall under their radar as well. Trust me, we keep track of everyone connected to our officers. That is why Amanda never risked revealing her identity to you. She wanted to keep you safe."
Kyle clicked his tongue. "So you want me to do nothing and just pretend I hate her? Is that what you’re saying?"
Veronica sighed and gently cupped his cheeks. As her thumb brushed across his skin, she spoke calmly.
"Take some time and organize your thoughts. If you eventually want to tell Amanda about yourself, that’s your choice. But for now, please don’t go near her."
Kyle gradually calmed down, partly because of how patiently she was speaking to him.
Then he asked, "Is it because of the Genesis I released back then?"
He remembered Veronica mentioning that the surge of magical essence that erupted from his house had been interpreted as the awakening of a Nightwalker in the area. Because of that, the PSC (Paranormal Suppression Corps) had already placed sensors around his house.
Veronica hesitated for a moment. Then she decided that hiding it any longer would only make things worse.
"There is another reason, actually."
She first guided him to sit on the bed, considering he was still injured. Once he settled down, she asked, "You know Ethan Lockhart, right?"
Kyle’s eyes sharpened. "Yes."
Veronica nodded before continuing, "I recently became the commander of this section. The officer who handled the trainees before me had received a request from Lady Lockhart, Ethan’s mother, to place Amanda and Ethan on the same team."
Kyle’s chest tightened slightly. "What? But why?"
Veronica shrugged. "I don’t know the full extent of the politics behind it, but it seems the Lockhart family is currently in need of strong support. And the Maylith clan holds significant influence, even among the Ten Petal clans. So if I had to guess, Ethan is pursuing Amanda because of his clan’s interests."
Kyle’s fist clenched, his eyes turning cold.
"That bastard..."
He lowered his head and muttered, "So he was deliberately driving us apart... making it look like Amanda chose him over me."
Veronica sighed. "As her team’s captain, Ethan has the authority to assign her to small tasks he finds important to some missions. All of Amanda’s mission information is also sent through him. That’s why she had to keep those messages hidden from you."
Kyle took a deep breath and slowly leaned back onto the bed.
Covering his eyes with his hand, he fell silent.
Veronica slowly rose from the bed and said, "Kyle...remember this...Amanda is an under close surveillance of many clans and Ethan is an asset for the corps. Please be careful with your actions."
Leaving those words behind, Veronica left the house, knowing how he must want to stay alone for some time.
Just at the doorstep, she glanced one last time at the man before a few words left her lips,
’As I thought...I am not made to play politics...’ With a defeated smile, she left the apartment.

A/N:- Maybe if you don’t understand: Veronica intended to keep the whole situation with Amanda hidden and make a room in his heart for herself.
But well, she failed. But don’t you fail to drop a comment, okay?
