Standing Next To You-Chapter 283: A Competition- A Bet
Chapter 283: A Competition- A Bet
Fei Chuan didn’t fully grasp her intention, but he was willing to assist Bei Sangyun in whatever way he could.
[What do you need help with?] he wrote.
[Studying,] Bei Sangyun replied.
Fei Chuan was momentarily puzzled. Bei Sangyun was already proficient in her studies—what could she possibly need his help with?
Bei Sangyun noticed the confusion on Fei Chuan’s face and couldn’t help but smile as she wrote:
[I don’t enjoy studying, but I think I can have fun if I’m with you. Will you study with me?]
Fei Chuan’s expression remained unreadable as he processed her words.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that Bei Sangyun had concocted this study proposition as a pretext to spend more time with him.
After a moment of contemplation, Fei Chuan considered his workload. He was currently swamped with tasks after impressing a major client who had referred him to others.
But as he glanced at Bei Sangyun’s earnest eyes and recalled the breakfast she had prepared for him every day, Fei Chuan’s resolve softened.
With a sigh, he wrote back:
[Fine, but only for an hour every day.]
A radiant smile spread across Bei Sangyun’s face, momentarily dazzling Fei Chuan, who quickly averted his gaze.
Suddenly, a note appeared before him, written in Bei Sangyun’s neat and confident handwriting:
[Great! You promise! No taking back!] She even drew a smiley face adorned with hearts beside her message.
Fei Chuan couldn’t help but smile in response, shaking his head, helpless at Bei Sangyun’s perseverance.
.....
Fei Chuan had agreed to study with Bei Sangyun, assuming it was merely an excuse for her to spend time with him after class.
He never expected that she genuinely intended to study.
Suddenly, Bei Sangyun dropped several thick books onto their desk. They were tucked away in a corner of the library, occupying the most inconspicuous table.
Fei Chuan glanced at the textbooks, taken aback. Were they actually going to study?
"I’ve been thinking," Bei Sangyun began, "a little competition might motivate us to improve our studying."
Fei Chuan furrowed his brow in confusion.
He had only agreed to help her study, so why bring competition into it? Nevertheless, he remained silent, curious about Bei Sangyun’s proposal.
"Whoever achieves the highest score gets to command the losers for an entire month," Bei Sangyun declared.
Fei Chuan’: "...."
"And the commands can be anything," she added, a suggestive tone in her voice.
Fei Chuan was utterly baffled.
This was absurd. He couldn’t possibly agree to such a bet.
Just as he was about to voice his objections, Zhong Cheng and Lin Sunji unexpectedly appeared, each carrying a stack of books.
Zhong Cheng dropped the books onto the desk. "Sorry we’re late. Lin Sunji took forever."
Lin Sunji shot him a shocked glance. *You’re the one who couldn’t decide what to bring!*
But she held her tongue, deciding not to stoop to such childishness.
Bei Sangyun waved off their tardiness. "It’s fine. I was just explaining the bet to Fei Chuan."
Lin Sunji’s eyes lit up at the mention of the bet. "You’re not kidding, are you?"
Lin Sunji had already heard about the arrangement of this study group and the bet from Zhong Cheng. She accepted without complaints because she had been eagerly anticipating the conditions of the bet.
If it were in the past, Lin Sunji wouldn’t have been so excited and confident. However, after hearing the gossip from teachers about Bei Sangyun’s drastic decline in academic performance and her lazy attitude towards studying, Lin Sunji felt a surge of hope.
Currently, Lin Sunji was topping every test, which only fueled her excitement further. If she maintained her position, Bei Sangyun would surely lose!
"I’m serious," Bei Sangyun assured her, producing a piece of paper with her name and signature already inscribed. "Write your name and sign here. This will be our contract."
Fei Chuan furrowed his brow. Why was there suddenly a contract involved?
He wanted to examine the contents of the seemingly outrageous contract, but Lin Sunji beat him to it. She snatched the paper from Bei Sangyun, and swiftly added her name, and confidently signed it.
Zhong Cheng followed suit, signing with equal confidence. He wasn’t worried about losing; after all, he knew his Boss would clinch the top spot. Despite the intimidating nature of the bet, he trusted Bei Sangyun wouldn’t demand anything unreasonable, like ordering him to commit a crime.
Finally, the contract landed in front of Fei Chuan.
The contents were straightforward and simple, merely stating the agreement to participate in the bet.
Fei Chuan scanned the names on the paper and voiced his thoughts.
"I thought you wanted to make studying enjoyable," he remarked. "What’s with all this?"
He had assumed it would be just the two of them. Why complicate things with additional people and an outrageous bet?
"It’s more enjoyable when there’s a challenge," Bei Sangyun replied, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
She had mulled over it all day. The only way she could see Fei Chuan truly showcasing his abilities was through a challenge.
Zhong Cheng and Lin Sunji had simply tagged along by chance. But as the saying goes, the more the merrier, right?
Bei Sangyun had never experienced group study sessions before. She had always studied alone, solely focused on securing the top spot.
But this time was different.
She didn’t want Fei Chuan to feel obligated to let her win the top rank without putting in any effort himself.
She hoped he could understand that.
Fei Chuan’s frown deepened.
As he looked at Zhong Cheng and Lin Sunji’s names, his concern grew.
He shouldn’t have to worry about Bei Sangyun losing to them. But considering her recent performance in tests and her unpredictable personality, there was a chance she might suffer a loss.
After all, it wasn’t too long ago that Bei Sangyun had been relentlessly pushing him for the top spot.
If Bei Sangyun lost, she would be at the mercy of either a seemingly harmless man, albeit still a man. If Zhong Cheng ordered something ridiculous, Fei Chuan would ensure that his descendants wouldn’t see the light for generations.
As for Lin Sunji...
She harbored mountains of grudges against Bei Sangyun. Given the chance, she would undoubtedly try to ruin Bei Sangyun’s life within that one month.
Fei Chuan’s glare bore into Bei Sangyun accusingly.
Was this her plan all along? Had she invited these two so that he wouldn’t be able to refuse this insane bet?
Fei Chuan could easily reject the proposition; after all, he wouldn’t be the one to suffer the consequences. However, considering that Bei Sangyun had orchestrated this for his sake, Fei Chuan couldn’t simply ignore it.
Despite the minuscule likelihood, Fei Chuan couldn’t bear the thought of seeing Bei Sangyun being ordered around by anyone.
With a resigned sigh, he reached for the pen and signed the contract.
Bei Sangyun’s delight was very evident as she clapped her hands in excitement.
She had been prepared to add another tempting condition if Fei Chuan hadn’t agreed. Thankfully, she wouldn’t need to resort to that.
But seeing her so happy left Fei Chuan feeling somewhat cheated.
He narrowed his eyes at her. Since it had come to this, he vowed to emerge victorious and teach Bei Sangyun a lesson for the duration of their bet.
