Sports Medicine Master System-Chapter 138 - 93: An Unexpected Accident, Hill Sprains His Ankle
Late at night.
Chen Yu carefully pushed open the door to the room and approached the hospital bed, glancing first at the various indicators on the monitoring equipment.
There was almost no change.
Then again, it was unlikely there would be any change. He was in a vegetative state; it would be a miracle if there was.
Just as Chen Yu was about to begin, he suddenly heard a sound from behind him.
It was Jennifer. She’d set up a folding bed in the corner of the room and was lying there.
"Sorry for waking you," Chen Yu apologized, then asked why she wasn’t home resting.
’With Carl’s condition, just watching over him won’t make him get any better.’
Jennifer sat up, wrapping the blanket around herself. She glanced at Carl first, then said bitterly, "I lost my home a long time ago. Wherever Carl is, that’s my home."
Chen Yu sighed to himself. He didn’t press the matter and quietly began to massage Carl.
Jennifer went and turned on the light. Watching Chen Yu work, she said gratefully, "Chen, thank you. I’ve never met a doctor as dedicated as you."
Over the past six months, she had met many doctors, but all of them were cold and distant.
She knew just how rare it was to find someone like Chen Yu, who would give up his own rest time to come and massage Carl every hour.
"Don’t mention it." Chen Yu shook his head, feeling a strange pang of guilt.
’Am I really doing this out of kindness? I’m just here for the experience points.’
Chen Yu could only console himself with the fact that the massage was at least helping Carl.
A short while later, Chen Yu finished the massage and turned to leave.
Just then, Jennifer suddenly asked, "Chen, will Carl wake up?"
Chen Yu turned to look. Jennifer was standing by the window. The way the curtains hung cast her face in shadow, leaving only her body illuminated, but Chen Yu could feel the hope burning in her eyes from within the darkness.
"I’m sorry. I don’t want to lie to you, and I think deep down, you already know the answer." ’I’ve made big promises to people like Hardaway and Ronaldo before,’ he thought, ’but that was because I was confident I could deliver. When it comes to someone in a vegetative state, I’m just not sure.’
Jennifer took a step forward into the light. Her face now illuminated, she smiled and nodded at Chen Yu. Then she climbed into bed, carefully lying down beside Carl.
Chen Yu sighed, turned, and walked out of the room.
Each massage earned Chen Yu 6 rehab experience points. In the morning, Chen Yu performed another acupuncture session on Carl.
All told, it took Chen Yu a full 14 hours to grind out this round of experience points.
As Chen Yu finished massaging Carl’s left arm, his experience bar filled.
Chen Yu smiled.
’So this method really works.’
[Congratulations, Host. You have obtained a Gold-Level Therapeutic Effect.]
’Gold Level!’
Suppressing his excitement, Chen Yu finished the rest of the massage.
Once he was done, Chen Yu stood up and said to Jennifer, "The team has a game tonight, so I have to get to the arena. But don’t worry, I’ll be coming by regularly to continue Carl’s rehab therapy."
It was Wednesday, and Jennifer had taken the day off work. She seemed to be a manager of some sort, with more flexible hours.
"Thank you."
Jennifer quickly got up to thank him; after more than a dozen hours, she could tell how exhausted Chen Yu was.
As she walked Chen Yu to the door, Jennifer turned back and said, "I can feel it. He’s much more comfortable."
Chen Yu didn’t say anything. ’That feeling is probably just your imagination,’ he thought.
He went downstairs, bought an extra-strong coffee, and chugged a few large mouthfuls. Only then did he start to feel a little more awake.
’Today was just about proving the concept. I won’t have to exhaust myself like this in the future. I can just set aside some time each day to grind, or... I could just transfer Carl to my own clinic.’
’And I could find a few more patients like him. Grinding them all at once would be much more efficient.’
He drove to the US Airways Center.
Even though it was a home game, it didn’t really matter whether he was there in person or not.
However, today’s game was against the Magic, and Hill and the others would be there. Plus, after the game, the Magic would be resting in Phoenix for a day before flying back to Orlando tomorrow.
It was a good chance to see them, which was why Chen Yu had come.
The game was late tonight, at 10:30. By the time he reached the arena, the sky was already dark. Chen Yu went to his office to catch a nap, and by the time he woke up, the team had already started their warm-ups.
With Nelson and the others keeping an eye on things, there was no cause for concern.
The Magic had arrived as well.
Chen Yu knew everyone on the Magic, from the head coach and staff down to the players, and he was on good terms with all of them.
"Chen, why’d you have to go to the Suns? You should’ve just stayed in Orlando." Armstrong hugged Chen Yu, unwilling to let go for a long moment. "You have no idea how much I miss your massages."
Nearby, Amichie nodded in agreement. "You don’t know how tough our practices are. Without your massage therapy, it’s honestly a little hard to get through."
Houston, standing off to the side, looked dejected. ’I have Chen’s notes, and I’m already trying my best, you know,’ he thought sadly.
Perhaps noticing Houston’s expression, Amichie clapped him on the shoulder. "Paul, we’re not saying you’re bad. You’re already amazing. But compared to Chen, there’s still a gap."
Houston gave a bitter smile. ’The man’s my teacher,’ he thought. ’How can I possibly compare?’
Chen Yu’s gaze swept over them. He could tell they had been training relentlessly.
’Probably making a push for the playoffs,’ he figured.
’The Magic dug themselves into too deep a hole early in the season. They have to go all out just to climb back out.’
"Oh, right, Paul." Chen Yu beckoned Houston over. "I’ll send you some more materials later. Have the guys try it out."
He was referring to the Five Animals Qigong and the formula for Physical Fitness No.1.
The Five Animals Qigong had excellent results, whether used as a warm-up routine or for long-term conditioning.
It was particularly effective at improving the body’s flexibility and balance.
Then there was Physical Fitness No.1.
Chen Yu had been rolling out this formula with the Suns for some time now, and the results were positive.
