Spirit's Ascension-Chapter 83—Leaving the Academy
Noticing Cole’s emotional state and his genuine plea to accept that mission. The two of them didn’t attempt to refute him.
They also felt a little compassion about the missing kids, so they didn’t feel any sort of aversion to the mission.
"Alright then, we can go for it," Linda said lightly.
Bryan didn’t say anything, but he nodded in approval. Now it was Cole’s turn to feel gratitude.
He even felt quite lucky to be able to get such understanding teammates.
"Thanks, guys," Cole said softly.
Klaus observed all of this with an extremely wide smile; he had previously wanted to recommend that mission, but it seemed there was no need.
"Why does everything appear to be falling in place," Klaus thought.
"Since you kids have decided it is time to register the mission as accepted then."
Klaus then led the kids deeper into the hall, where the kids filled in the necessary information and the specific mission.
After that was done, they were led back to the previous spot by Klaus again.
"Now the registration is done, you guys can leave and head to the exit to be transported to the right location."
The kids didn’t bother wasting any more time; they turned around and began approaching the academy gates.
Cole was walking especially fast as if he wanted to arrive there as soon as possible.
The others could notice this, and this further deepened their conclusion on the matter.
While Cole walked ahead, his mind was already stuck on another point.
"How can doctors Thomas operate here and there at the same time?"
"It might not be doctor Thomas then, but if it isn’t, who is it?" he pondered.
Though kids missing in the slum wasn’t too rare an occurrence, it was usually not a typical occurrence that would raise an eyebrow. This was another sign of the brutality in the slums.
But for the mission to be on that point, then there must be something really deep, and the scale must be quite big.
"We need to get there as soon as possible, to see what exactly is going on," Cole thought while further quickening his steps.
Back in the mission hall, the woman that previously questioned Klaus was looking at him strangely again.
"You just gave those kids the mission list meant for third years, you know," She said.
"Really, are you 100 percent sure I did, if you aren’t, then keep your mouth shut," Klaus lashed out.
Now the woman was even more convinced that something was going on, but she didn’t want to press more for the fear of losing her life.
The Academy isn’t too nice to weak, untalented workers like them, and she had little idea of the people Klaus usually dealt with.
Klaus proceeded to ignore the woman totally while he left the building in hurried steps.
"I need to report the successful assignment," he said excitedly.
Cole, Bryan, and Linda had already arrived at her school’s entrance, and as they expected, the place was packed.
At the entrance was what looked to be a quick collapsible fence; students were being called in as a team, one after the other.
Outside, on an elevated platform, a man was standing there shouting out some instructions to the students.
"After you arrive at the required destination, there should be someone waiting for you guys; the person will be the one giving you the specifics on what you are to do."
"The person won’t be leaving the outpost, and nor will the person physically assist you guys in your mission; he is only there to provide information."
Cole listened to all of this with a lot of urgency; he didn’t feel the need for them to hear those words over and over.
He wanted nothing more than to head to the tent and then leave the academy as soon as possible.
His teammates were all standing behind him with a more relaxed look. They weren’t as attached or disturbed by the matter as Cole was.
The line in front of the tent moved rather slowly, increasing Cole’s impatience even more.
Just as he was about to lose his cool and begin to riot or something. It was finally their turn.
The three of them were led into the tent by another worker, and what they saw amazed them extremely.
At the center of the tent stood a small round elevated podium. The podium was everything but ordinary.
It was covered in purple runes that pulsed slightly, resulting in a faint feeling of bending space.
Cole and Bryan watched with wide eyes as they observed what was in front of them.
They did all of this while still moving, so it didn’t delay them in any way.
"Haven’t you guys seen a teleportation podium before?" Linda asked arrogantly.
Both Cole and Bryan felt quite embarrassed with Bryan rubbing his bald head and Cole looking away.
"Tsk, ignorant," Linda said proudly.
The three of them were ordered to climb the podium the moment they stepped on it.
Cole felt something extremely strange.
He could feel like his body was absent and present at the same time, in a weird state of superimposition."
"What’s going on?, he couldn’t help but ask"
The man operating the teleportation podium felt benevolent enough to actually respond to his questions.
"Don’t try to fight it; it is just your body’s reaction to Space at slightly elevated levels."
"It isn’t a really good feeling right now," the man said.
Cole and Bryan hurriedly nodded, as they weren’t feeling too good about themselves.
"Bear with it. It will be over very soon."
"Now close your eyes and try your best to release all control over your body," he instructed.
They all followed the instructions, and they relaxed completely, nodding gently the man tapped on some things in front of him, and they all vanished, leaving the podium empty again.
Cole couldn’t describe what he was feeling inside him at that moment; it was a mixture of multiple feelings that produced something even worse.
Despite not knowing what he was feeling, he was sure of something.
"I don’t want to ever do this again," he said.
After a while, though, the feeling gradually subsided, and Cole opened his eyes to check his surroundings.
"Where am I?" he said while looking at the complete darkness surrounding him.
"You are dead," he suddenly heard, a chilling voice coming from behind him.
