Sold to the Capo-Chapter 92: A CALL
ADRIANA’S POV
A second passed, and we were still staring at each other, with me trying to keep my face passive.
"Salvatore" I forced a smile.
He looked me over and pushed himself off the doorway, stalking towards me with purposeful strides. "What are you doing here? I noticed you weren’t coming for breakfast so I thought I’d come look for you. What are you looking for in the cabinet?" He looked at me, taking his time, and for a moment, I felt paranoid, like he could see the outline of the knife tucked under my shirt.
He raised his gaze to mine again, his eyes piercing. "Vitalio said he just met you by the way" Then his gaze dropped to the very place where I had put the knife under my shirt and my breath hitched, I was half expecting him to call me out on it and get it off me and honestly, I was prepared to use the knife if he proved to be a threat to me.
Instead, he looked back up at me, locking gazes with me again, a stoic look on his face, watching me as I nodded.
"Yes, I did meet him" I walked away from the counter, praying to everything that my knees didn’t buckle, that would give me away surely but thankfully, I was able to hold my shit together, tucking my stomach in more so the knife outline couldn’t be seen even if he tried. "He seems like such a nice person," I said without thinking.
He raised a brow, his gaze fixed on me; it was like he was waiting for me to slip up, and goddamn it, I was this close to slipping up and saying or doing something that I shouldn’t have. "Nice? Vitalio is not nice. You should know that about judging people by their looks or their first impression"
When he noticed the confused look on my face, he sighed, muttering a curse in Italian. "I’m not saying he’ll hurt you; I’m just telling you that he’s not...nice," he explained.
That wasn’t my problem, I didn’t give two fucks about Vitalio, but I was more concerned that Salvatore knew, most likely about the weapon I was hiding, and the fact that he chose to keep silent scared the hell out of me.
I was silent, and he went silent, too, before he took a step closer, his eyes searching my face. "Are you scared?" He whispered and I could feel my heart beating so fast that I feared it would leap out of my chest.
With a quick step back, I rubbed at my neck. "I’m not scared. Should I be?" I matched his gaze, keeping an undaunted expression on.
He smirked and tucked his hands in his pockets. "I don’t see why you should be carrying a knife if you don’t feel threatened." He shrugged, and my heart seemed to stop at the statement.
He knew and he wasn’t doing anything about it. I don’t know what that made him. A fool? A confident ass? Or innocent?
He would have no reason to fear if he was innocent, would he? But I had heard the conversation clearly; he was talking to Master LaRosa, and as it was... Master LaRosa wasn’t a friend.
I subconsciously tucked my stomach more, almost to the point of hitching my breath to hollow my tummy. "Don’t you have breakfast to get to? I’ll just grab a fruit and go back to my room; I have a lot of work to do since I need to settle in." I looked away, avoiding his piercing gaze.
He leaned back, a hard expression now on his face. "As you wish. I just wanted to give you something before you go," He muttered, and I looked up.
"What?"
He smiled and leaned forward again, a cocky look on his face. "I’ll get a burner phone sent to you so you can call Vincenzo... see if that puts you at ease... or if you want, you can get your phone back at midnight, hm?" He muttered, waiting for me to say something.
Wait. Was he serious? My eyes widened and I quickly nodded. Finally. "Yeah, sure." I struggled to keep the excitement out of my tone, but I knew he caught the subtlety of excitement no matter how I tried to hide it.
"Eat whatever you want to eat, oh and there’s not really any network here at night, just at the rooftop so if you want to call Vincenzo, go to the rooftop in the morning when I’m there, I have a lot of work to do this night so you can make the call in the morning, it’s a great place to...hear a lot of things" He said vaguely then walked out of the kitchen leaving me filled with fear.
His words.
He knew. He knew I was there last night. He knew that I had listened in on the conversation and he was going to do something about me.
With shaking hands, I grabbed a piece of bread and walked back to my room, my gaze distant as I locked myself in, my heart pounding.
He was dropping hints, did that mean he would kill me off?
Vincenzo wasn’t here and fear gripped me instantly as I sat on the edge of my bed, chewing on my nails relentlessly while thinking of a solution to the situation I had found myself in.
Leaving the house wasn’t an option; his men were everywhere, and I didn’t know a single goddamn place here in Costa Rica, not to mention that my phone was with him, so I couldn’t contact anyone even if I wanted to.
As I sat there brooding while arranging my room and thinking, I came to the conclusion that I would have to resort to the last method possibleㅡ to shoot my way out if I was threatenedㅡ the memory of the last person I had killed at Master LaRosa’s mansion made me gag and I remembered how the memory seemed to haunt me for days.
After that day, I wondered if I was any different from the monsters I lived with; I wasn’t raised like them, yet I found myself constantly in their web, but I always managed to escape until the day I met Vincenzo, and my fate was sealed.
Valentina had said a soft behavior would get me nowhere and tonight that I would be utterly alone; I realized how that was true. It was simply adapting to my environment, and right now, the adaptation required manning the weapon in my closet.
Sometime at midnight, there was a sharp knock on my door and I jerked, my voice cracking as I answered. "What is it?" I called out.
The person stopped without uttering a word, and through the gap between the door and the floor, something slid through, and I could see the person’s shadow under the gap slowly retreat.
I dashed to the door once I was sure that the person was gone and I realized it was my phone.
Thank fuck for that.
With shaking hands, I switched it on, still wondering why Salvatore had actually given me my phone. He had told me to come to the roof in the morning so he could be there when I made the call since he was busy tonight but I wasn’t going to wait that long.
How would I say that Salvatore was the snitch if Salvatore was there? He would kill me before I would be able to tell Vincenzo. If my assumptions were correct, then he only wanted to be there to see what I would tell Vincenzo, and I wasn’t about to play right into his hands.
I checked my phone and just as Salvatore had said, there was no signal. There was a signal on the roof; that was where he made his calls anyway.
With a curse, I opened the door to my room and tiptoed out, thankful when I didn’t see any guard in the hallway.
I took a look at my phone to still see the same "no signal message" before I started moving in the direction of the staircase that would take me up to the roof.
With each quiet step that I took, it sounded to me like I was stomping about the place, but no one showed up, so I continued my ascent, not wanting to reach the roof completely In case there was a trap there.
When I checked my phone again, I saw that there was now a form of the signal, so I quickly ducked into the nearest hallway, my fingers shaking as I hurriedly dialed Vincenzo’s number and put it to my ear.
The phone managed to ring twice before Vincenzo picked up the call. "Tesoro?" I heard his confused tone and a wave of emotions immediately washed over me.
"Vincenzo, I need to tell you something, I fㅡ" I pushed my feelings aside and started to talk when he cut me off.
"I can’t believe the motherfucker gave you your phone, Tesoro, you know you can’t be calling mㅡ" 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
So he did tell Salvatore not to give me the phone. The realization hurt but I was determined to go on with what I wanted to say.
"Just fucking listen to me! Salvatore is the snitch! He’s been talking to Master LaRosa and telling him all your plans!" I whispered harshly into the phone, my heart pounding.
Salvatore’s room was right above this, and he probably couldn’t hear me, but that did nothing to quell the fear.
"Hold on..." I heard Vincenzo mutter. "Wㅡcan’tㅡSalvㅡ" the connection started to break off.
No wait. Wait. Damn it!
"Vincenzo! Listen to me! Salvatore is the sㅡ" Suddenly, I felt someone’s presence behind me, the person hitting my phone and clamping my mouth shut with a large hand, ignoring my stifled scream, using the other hand to pin both of my hands tightly behind me, making sure I didn’t move.
"Shhhh..." The person whispered, their breath hot against my neck while I struggled to keep my calm despite the sweat beading across my forehead. "We’re gonna have a little chat, Adriana"
I shut my eyes, placing the voice.
Salvatore.
