Chapter 76: DECISIONS TO LEAVE

ADRIANA’S POV

I sat at the edge of my bed, staring at the locked door and I sighed for the umpteenth time.

Clearly, Vincenzo thought I shouldn’t be at the meeting, so to make sure that I didn’t come waltzing into the meeting, he had kept me in the room saying that I wasn’t in the right physical state to attend something like that, but he would brief me after.

I understood that his enemies seeing me in a state like this would lead to questions and suspicions that he couldn’t afford at this point which is why he had resorted to something like this. The bruises on my skin were beginning to heal and were almost faded, but it was still visible to those who cared to look, and anyone who saw it would know that it was a beating.

What would he say? That he couldn’t hold his own fort but wanted to ally with them? There were already enough rumors that he couldn’t control his own people so me appearing like that would only serve to solidify those thoughts.

There was a guard outside the door but I didn’t know which one of them it was. Vincenzo had only said that he would assign someone to watch my door in case of anything.

I needed to know what was happening downstairs, I wanted to know, it made me queasy just sitting here helplessly, staring at my phone.

I could just do something on the phone but it wouldn’t change the fact that there was an important meeting and I wasn’t there.

With that in mind, I stood up and walked to the door, now walking without such an obvious limp. Why couldn’t I just cover my bruises with makeup or something? I had asked him but he had quickly dismissed it and kept insisting on me staying in the room.

With his attitude so far, I could only guess that it wasn’t just about my bruises, he just didn’t want me to be there for some reason. When he arrived from Grace’s quarters, he had shut himself off from me completely. I don’t know what he had heard or done there, but he was clearly agitated.

I knocked on the door and used the intercom that Vincenzo had given me to speak to the person outside if it was important.

The person immediately answered. "Yes ma’am?"

"Is the meeting done yet?" I asked.

There was a slight pause then the person’s voice came through. "No" The person replied curtly.

"Wait... Gio?" I asked, suddenly recognizing the voice.

"Yes," The person confirmed.

Knowing Gio and his stickler-for-the-rules attitude, I knew that he wasn’t going to open the door until Vincenzo ordered him to.

Shit. Just had to pair me with the worst of the bunch.

With a sigh, I walked back to bed, sitting back down heavily.

They had been in the meeting for about an hour, and I was getting cranky; what were they discussing that was so important? He had said it was about the Bratva but why was it taking so long? Were they preparing for a mafia clash?

That would make sense as to why they all needed to meet, judging from the last meeting where Vincenzo had killed that man in front of me, I had deduced that no other Don was particularly on amicable terms with Vincenzo so whatever they were discussing had to affect them greatly so they would have to partner with Vincenzo if they were going to avoid it.

With a sigh, I grabbed my phone and randomly started playing games just to keep myself busy.

A few hours later, the door to the room was opened, and I saw Gio peek his head in, a blank look on his face, and I dropped my phone to the soft bed.

"What?" I asked, my eyes wide with curiosity.

"The meeting is finished. You didn’t eat your food?" He nodded to the untouched tray of food next to the bed.

I followed his gaze and sighed. How was I supposed to eat when I was feeling uneasy? I had just stared at the food and my drugs throughout the time I had spent in the room. I had missed my evening dose of drugs, but I didn’t care; I just wanted to get downstairs now.

"I’m not hungry" I replied, already pushing myself off the bed to go downstairs.

Gio looked over his shoulder and nodded at someone before he looked at me again and bowed, leaving immediately.

I stood, rooted to the spot because I knew that it was Vincenzo, who was already upstairs, that had told him to leave, so I waited for him to enter the room himself.

Seconds later, his figure lumbered into the room, exhaustion written on his face as he looked at me. His dark hair fell over his eyes, obscuring those hazel-colored eyes that I had grown used to seeing.

"I would have expected you to be asleep" His voice was soft as he closed the door behind him, a heavy sigh escaping his lips.

"You look like you need sleep more than me." I let my eyes flick around his frame, watching as he came over to the bed and sat down, looking up at me.

"Let’s talk." His tone was low, and I immediately guessed it was important, so I sat next to him on the bed, looking at him with a worried expression.

"What’s wrong? I was going to give you a piece of my mind again for leaving me here, but I think I’ll leave that for later; I, however, do want to know wㅡ" That was as far as I got before he gripped my hand suddenly, his dark eyes piercing into mine in a desperate look.

"Not now, Tesoro." He quickly shut me up, and I tensed, unsure where this conversation was heading.

"What?" I whispered instead.

"What do you think about leaving Italy?" He asked after a moment of hesitation.

What? The question made my heart skip a beat and dread filled me.

"You mean...both of us should leave Italy?" I whispered, confusion evident in my tone.

He shook his head, his rough hand on mine squeezing mine tighter. "No, just you. I want you to leave Italy"

It felt like the air had been knocked out of my lungs.

"What?"
