Chapter 300: Done Floating

The human heart was one of the most complicated organs out there. From a scientific point of view, all that it did was pump blood throughout the body. But it was also thanks to the heart that human beings were able to feel so deeply. And because of those feelings, people tended to do irrational things.

That they would not have done if they were not being ruled by their emotions. When Emily had found out that Derek had been cheating on her, she had made up her mind. Just because she loved him, that did not mean that she would stick around and be his mistress.

It should have been as simple as that. But her traitorous heart, had left behind a sliver of hope.

I am leaving, but if he comes to find me to explain everything in person then maybe, just maybe I might take him back. She should not have had such a thought in her mind at all.

All things to do with Derek Haven, should have been deleted from her memories. Her feelings for him vanishing the moment that his mother had told her about her son’s engagement.

But Emily, despite the pain that she was in, had wanted him to have one more chance. As the days had turned into weeks, and he had not tried to contact her in person.

She had taken that to mean that he really had been caught out. That he’d not had good intentions for her from the very beginning. It had added more to her pain. But then Emily had at least been certain in the knowledge that she now knew where Derek stood.

How he viewed her. How he saw that relationship as having been something, that he could easily get over.

But now her mom had just gone and rocked her world. Derek had come for her. He had come directly to the apartment wanting to talk.

Emily had missed an opportunity to hear him out one last time. To make matters worse, when she had seen him again at Haven Group. She had been nothing but chilly towards him.

Now their worlds were well and truly separate. She had no reason to go back to Haven Group, and he had no reason to come back to the apartment. Especially after Emily’s mom had kicked him out. And Emily was too ashamed to even dream of calling him.

Her shame was so great that instead of staying and facing things, she was running away. It was not even running as such. She needed to be someplace else. Somewhere where she could grieve, the loss of her relationship, in peace, and move on, because now that was all there was to it.

Derek might have had a valid reason, or he might not have. It was one of those things that Emily would never know, because the opportunity to learn the truth had been taken from her.

It was an emotional sink or swim situation.

But since Emily was not yet ready to start swimming, she had decided that she would float for a bit. The day before, when Emily had left the apartment. She’d had no idea where she was going. In fact, she’d had half a mind to just turn around and go back, but she had ended up spending the night at a hotel.

Trying to come up with a way forward.

And in between all of the crying, and feeling sorry for herself. Emily had finally come up with something. It was not a tangible plan yet, but she at least had decided on her next few steps.

Instead of staying in the city, and just trying to get over things as quickly as possible. She was going to take a bit of time off, to be away from everything so that she could process. Over the past few weeks without Derek, Emily had thought that she was doing exactly that.

But now there was a new element to the whole thing.

Her mom’s involvement.

Emily might not have lost her temper at her mother and just gone all crazy. But she still could not hide the fact that she was not happy with her mom.

Not only that, after years of lying she had finally come out and told her mom the truth about the fact that her nightmares had never stopped. That Emily had been struggling with getting a good night’s rest for years before Derek had come around. If Emily had turned back, and gone to the apartment.

Then a lot of things would have needed to be addressed. Things that she was not ready to talk about yet. No doubt her mom would want more information on Emily’s sleeping problems.

Knowing her, she would go from shock, to anger, to self-blame, to sadness, with such a quickness that Emily would be left feeling as though she had been thrown into a whirlpool.

Normally, Emily would have at least tried to be there to console her mum, but she was in no state to deal with someone else’s emotional upheaval. She herself was struggling, barely able to hold it together.

Which was why Emily had made the decision to go away for a bit. Her destination being the small town where she and Derek had first slept together was also no accident. When she had packed her bags and decided to leave, Emily had not just taken clothing and toiletries.

Even though it was a last minute decision, and she had been in a less than stable space emotionally when she had been packing, Emily had still remembered to take two very important things with her.

The picture puzzle that she had been completing before the end of her and Derek’s relationship. As well as the embroidered heart that she had wanted to give him. The two items were the last two reminders that Emily had of Derek.

And though she had been avoiding them for weeks. Emily now knew that if she were ever to get over things. She would have to come to a decision on what to do with them. Whatever that decision was going to be. It would have to involve the town of Joy somehow. It was symbolic.

After all, that was where everything had started for the two of them. Where they had slept for the first time because they were in each other’s arms. Now it would also have to be the place where Emily came to grips with the fact that she would no longer be having any chances whatsoever, to be with Derek again. At four in the morning, Emily was not in bed pretending to be asleep, she was up and about. The days of pretending to sleep were well and truly over.

In fact, once she returned, she would have to deal with the fact that her mom knew. The cat was well and truly out of the bag. But for now, Emily was at the airport.

Getting ready to board the flight that she had booked the night before.

It would still be early morning when she arrived at the town of Joy. When she would leave, Emily had no idea. But when she did leave, she made a promise to herself that she would have resolved her issues.

By the time that she left Joy, she would no longer just be floating through life.

She would be actively living.
