Chapter 275: All A Lie?

Being a child was funny. Emily remembered being able to spin round and round in circles.

Then by the time that she stopped. She would be so dizzy she would not even be able to stand. Simply collapsing and staring up at the sky, watching it spin, the colours swirling in a giant vortex. Her body seeming to be the only unmoving thing. Weighed down, and only able to watch the world speeding by at breakneck speed. As a child, Emily had greatly enjoyed that feeling, often taking multiple turns on the merry-go-round just to feel it again.

But as an adult, and thanks to Derek Haven, Emily was feeling that feeling again. No spinning in circles needed. She did not like it at all. It did not even have the feel of the simple game that she had played as a child. Instead, it felt as though somebody had taken Emily fresh off a roller coaster and had thrown her down a cliff.

When she had first come home and collapsed on the rug, Emily had been of the mind that she would just lay there for a bit. Gather herself, and then get up once she had come to terms with everything that had gone on the night before.

But what was there for her to come to terms with?

The fact that Cassandra Haven hated her guts, and thought her to be some cheap gold digger. The woman had literally been throwing money at Emily the same way that some mean children throw coins at squirrels and birds. ’Take this and disappear,’

She had been saying with each amount that she had written down. And like a fool, Emily had stood there and resisted. Thinking that she was fighting for something...something genuine...for herself and Derek.

But then Cassandra Haven, tired of playing nice. Had ripped the strawberry tinted contact lenses that Emily had been wearing when it came to what she and Derek had. ’Even if you love him, are you truly telling me that you are alright with everything. That you will still continue to be with him after his marriage?"

Derek’s mother had asked and Emily’s world had fallen apart.

The man that she had thought she knew. The boyfriend that she’d thought she’d had, had all been a lie, a well-crafted sinister lie. She had been nothing more than his plaything, and that hurt. It hurt to think, and it hurt to acknowledge. Every single part of the revelation that Derek had merely been toying with her, weighed down on Emily with a pressure, so intense it could have even cracked diamonds.

While he had been seeing her, Derek had also been in a relationship with Penny of all people. Penny, the very woman that he’d had Emily dress up, and go with him in order to act as a shield.

Back then, Emily had thought that she was helping. That she was making sure that the other woman knew that her advances towards Derek were unwanted. But now she wondered what sort of sick game they had been playing with her. Did Derek call Penny after Emily had left, the morning after spending the night with him" or had Penny called Derek, the two of them having a laugh at her expense while Derek was getting ready for work.

"Der-bear, you were right. She was so gullible. Did you see the way that she stood in front of you like a good dog?

Actually thinking that she was protecting you," Emily could just imagine the conversation, the two of them pausing every so often to laugh at her expense. And once her mind went that route, it brought up other things as well.

The little moments between herself and Derek that she treasured, no longer feeling as sacred. During their first kiss, where she had been the one to slot her lips against his. Had he too been lost in the moment as she had? Or had he been thinking at the back of his mind, Aha! I have finally got her. She has fallen into my trap!

Had he been faking being happy to see her, to spend time with her during their dates, all the cuddles, all the kisses. Had those been fake...or worse?

Had he enjoyed himself, but not because he was spending time with Emily. But because he was anticipating just how hard, and how far she would fall when he finally ended his charade? Did he ever plan to end it at all? Or had he thought that he could have both Penny, and Emily at the same time?

Penny being every bit the socialite wife, the woman by his side. The one that he introduced to the world. The two of them gliding through their social circles together. Charming people wherever they went, while Emily remained in the shadows. No longer being Emily the personal assistant, but Emily the mistress. A dirty, shameful secret. Someone who would be viewed as a home wrecker were her existence ever to be exposed.

She wanted to get up and just step into the shower, clothes and all, to try and wash away the unclean feeling. But she could not find the energy to do so. She just lay where she had fallen and did not move. Time passed, of course it did. It had never been known to stop for anyone. Why should it do so for a broken hearted woman?

Emily was aware of the shadows lengthening as the sun moved across the sky. But she had no idea that a lot of time had passed until she heard the front door open, her mother coming in. Coming back from work after being gone most of the day. Which meant that Emily had been on the carpet for way too long, The moment that her mother noticed her, Emily knew because the older woman gasped, and there was a loud thud. Most probably she had dropped her bag on the floor.

"Emily!" Her mother’s worried voice reached her, and the next thing she knew, she was being rolled over. Her mom’s terrified face coming into view. "What happened? Did you fall? Are you all right?"

She asked, the concern on her face clear to see.

This...Emily thought, eyes blurry, her body being cradled gently...was love. How she could have ever thought that she felt the same way about someone as awful as Derek Haven. She had no idea.

Emily had not cried since she’d left the diner. And during her time on the rug, she had come to believe that she was all cried out. That her tears had dried up.

But all it took to prove her wrong, was a gentle touch, her mother’s palm against her cheek, and the tears began anew. Once she began, she could not stop, burying her face in her mother’s shoulder and crying and crying, clinging to her tightly.

Emily did not see the look of horrible, understanding that flashed across her mother’s face. Nor did she see her gaze harden briefly, before her mom forced all of her rage away, instead pooling all of her energy into comforting Emily.
