Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Won’t Let Her Go, Even If They Divorce

Afraid her uncle would scold her again, Serena Yardley quickly hung up the phone.

She didn’t leave. Instead, she sat nearby, gazing eagerly at the office building, waiting for her uncle to finish work.

「In the CEO’s office.」

Ethan Yardley stared at the disconnected call, his chest tightening with anger.

’That woman is getting more and more out of hand. Not only has she learned to defy me, but she also gets angry and even threatens me.’

’It seems I need to teach her a lesson. She has no idea who she’s provoking.’

Closing the file and capping his pen, Ethan Yardley shouted toward the door, "Someone get in here."

Yannick Young immediately pushed the door open. "President."

"Find a younger caregiver and send her to Sylvia Schuyler’s place. I want her to have 24/7 personal care."

Yannick Young nodded. "Yes, sir."

After his executive assistant withdrew, Ethan Yardley also rose, took his jacket, and left.

Dressed in a vest and shirt, with his suit jacket draped over his arm, he walked out of the office building, his posture ramrod-straight and his aura domineering.

By the entrance, beside a luxurious, expensive sedan, the chauffeur respectfully held the door open for him.

Just as Ethan Yardley was about to duck into the car, Serena Yardley’s soft voice called out from nearby.

"Uncle..."

Ethan Yardley froze, lifting his eyes toward the voice.

Not far away, he saw Serena Yardley in simple, youthful casual clothes, her hair in a topknot. She looked so small, just standing there.

The sight of her made Ethan Yardley’s anger flare.

’He’d been just about to go home and deal with her.’

’And she had the nerve to come looking for him.’

Angry as he was, his expression dark, Ethan Yardley still called out, "What are you standing there for? Want to take a taxi home by yourself?"

Hearing that, Serena Yardley quickly walked over and, without hesitation, pulled open the car door on the other side to get in.

Ethan Yardley got in as well.

As the car drove off, the man finally spoke, his voice cold. "What did you say on the phone earlier?"

Serena Yardley played dumb and looked out the window. "What a nice day. Not a cloud in the sky."

Ethan Yardley reached over and pinched her ear. "Say it again."

A jolt of pain shot through Serena Yardley. She turned, pulling at her uncle’s hand on her ear as she said plaintively:

"I just want you to spend more time with me. I don’t want you focusing all your attention on another woman while you’re still my husband."

"Besides, we’re going to get divorced. It won’t be too late for you to be with her then. The two of you will have all the time in the world later."

’But she was running out of time.’

’She truly didn’t know how much longer she could last.’

Ethan Yardley released her. Serena’s words made him realize once again how hurt she was.

He pulled her into his arms. "But you can’t threaten me. What good does it do you to make me angry?"

"But that’s because I care."

Serena Yardley pouted, mumbling into his chest.

"In any case, before we’re divorced, you belong only to me. If you go see another woman, I’ll leave."

Seeing her still acting up, Ethan Yardley looked down at her, reaching out to pinch her chubby little face.

"You dare try to leave. I’ll break your legs."

He wasn’t joking.

Serena Yardley pulled away from his embrace and glared at him. "So, I can’t leave after the divorce either?"

Ethan Yardley’s tone was serious. "Even if we’re divorced, you’re to stay in this city and live in the house I buy for you."

"By what right?"

"By the right of being your benefactor."

"What kind of person are you? You’re my benefactor, and I wanted to have your child to repay you, but you refused. You won’t let me leave after the divorce... what are you trying to do? Are you two-timing me?"

’Truthfully, the fact that her uncle wouldn’t let her leave made her think he must like her.’

’Why else wouldn’t he let her go?’

’But if he clearly liked her, why did he still want to divorce her?’

’Wasn’t this just torture for both of them?’

"Serena Yardley, you listen to me. You have no right to interfere in my affairs, but I am the only one who will make decisions about your life."

"Even if we’re divorced someday, you will obediently follow the life I’ve planned for you."

Ethan Yardley said, his tone icy. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

’Serena was young and naive, with a simple heart and no defenses.’

’If she left this city, there was no telling what kind of predators she might encounter.’

’He had saved her, so it was only natural that he protect her for life.’

Serena Yardley’s anger flared upon hearing this.

She moved away from him, her chest so tight she was speechless.

Ethan Yardley paid her no further mind.

Just then, his phone rang.

Ethan Yardley glanced at the caller ID. It was Sylvia Schuyler.

He answered the call.

On the other end of the line, Sylvia Schuyler’s voice was especially gentle. "Ethan, I’m in the mood for hot pot today. Could you buy some vegetables at the supermarket downstairs on your way back?"

Ethan Yardley hesitated for a moment before speaking. "I’m not coming over today. I had Yannick Young send two caregivers over to look after you."

Sylvia Schuyler instantly grew flustered. "Why? You clearly promised you would come to my place every day after work."

"Sylvia, I’m still married."

"Then divorce her! If you divorce Serena Yardley, you can come here rightfully, can’t you?"

Ethan Yardley turned to look at the young woman sitting beside him.

Serena Yardley knew the call was from Sylvia Schuyler.

She sat properly beside him, not uttering a word.

’She had already made her position clear: if her uncle went to be with that woman, she would leave.’

’She would go somewhere no one could find her and never appear in her uncle’s life again.’

Ethan Yardley knew the person beside him didn’t want him to go, so he said into the phone:

"Give me a little more time. The two-year term isn’t up yet, is it?"

"I don’t want to wait two more years! Ethan, if you don’t come back tonight, I’ll jump off my balcony. I’ve already died once before. I’m not afraid of anything."

"Sylvia." Ethan Yardley’s voice grew cold.

Over the phone, Sylvia flew into a hysterical fit. "My being alive is pointless anyway! If I die, you’ll never have to be responsible for me again! I’ll set you free!"

The moment she finished speaking, she hung up the phone.

In the car, Ethan Yardley was at his wit’s end.

He motioned to the driver. "Turn the car around. Head to The Paramount."

The driver quickly made a U-turn at the next opportunity.

Pocketing his phone, Ethan Yardley looked at the girl beside him. "The driver will take you back in a bit. Be good now, don’t make a scene."

Serena Yardley sat with her head down, ultimately unable to hold back her tears.

Yet she still pretended like nothing was wrong, nodding with a bleak smile. "Okay. I’ll behave."

Ethan Yardley reached out and stroked her hair, his voice low. "Serena, this is very difficult for me."

’He knew she was hurting.’

’But he owed Sylvia.’

’If he didn’t repay that debt, he would never be able to live with himself.’

Serena Yardley hastily wiped the tears from her cheeks, struggling to control her emotions as she nodded understandingly.

"Uncle, I understand your predicament. I won’t make this hard for you. Go ahead."

"Then why are you crying?"

’Her tears made his heart clench.’

"I’m not crying. I just got something in my eye."

Serena Yardley said to the chauffeur, "You can pull over up ahead, sir. I’ll get a taxi back myself."

The chauffeur didn’t dare to stop; he had to wait for his boss’s command.

Ethan Yardley’s thin lips pressed into a tight line, his expression cold and grave. "Serena Yardley, don’t cause trouble."
