When Ethan got harsh, Serena felt aggrieved.
She glared at him and shouted, "Is refusing your things considered making a scene?"
"Then why are you refusing my things?"
Serena snapped in frustration, "Can’t I be sad when it hurts to be surrounded by these memories?"
He knew she loved him deeply and couldn’t bear to leave him.
If they had to separate, how could she ever forget him while living here, surrounded by his belongings and reminders of their past?
If she couldn’t forget him, how could she ever pull herself together and move on?
Ethan was speechless.
Her words—that it hurt to be surrounded by these memories—made him understand what Serena was thinking.
She didn’t want to leave him, but she was heartbroken over his plan to marry Sylvia.
’It’s my fault.’
Ethan reached out his long arms and pulled Serena’s petite frame into his embrace. "I’m sorry."
Serena struggled in his arms. "Let me go."
"Serena, I’ve told you why I’m marrying Sylvia.
It’s just about a marriage certificate. I’ll give it to her, but we won’t have a real marital relationship. So even if we get divorced, you can stay by my side."
Serena pushed the man away with all her strength, her eyes red as she questioned him:
"Do you want me to be your mistress?"
"What do you mean, mistress? We were..."
"I won’t do it."
Serena angrily cut him off, shouting hoarsely, "I refuse to stay by your side and act like nothing happened after you’re legally married to her.
Ethan, just let me go. Can’t you at least grant me that bit of dignity?"
Before, she thought that as long as she clung to Ethan and refused to leave him no matter what, he would be hers forever.
But she was wrong.
’What do I, Serena Yardley, have to keep this man?’
Ethan owed Sylvia, and he had to use his marriage to repay her.
And as for what she owed Ethan... he didn’t want her to have his child. Her only option was to leave and stop causing him trouble.
’It’s for the best for everyone.’
"You silly girl, where would you go without me?"
Ethan gripped her arms, his deep, dark eyes fixed on her. "I won’t let you out of my sight. Understand?"
"No. If you marry someone else, I’m leaving.
You can’t be so cruel. You know I love you, yet you’re going to make me watch you marry another woman."
Feeling wronged, she started crying again, her sobs wracking her body as tears streamed endlessly down her face.
Ethan hated seeing this woman cry more than anything.
Whenever she cried, his heart felt like it was being squeezed.
"I haven’t married her yet. Be good. Don’t make a scene with me."
His long, slender fingers cradled her small, palm-sized face, gently wiping away her tears.
Perhaps because it had been a long time since he’d touched her, seeing her looking so pitifully beautiful as she cried stirred a sudden impulse in him.
He bent down to kiss her.
Serena quickly raised her hands to resist, pushing him away. "Don’t do this. Don’t touch me."
"Be good~~"
He restrained her flailing hands and, holding her, turned toward the large bed.
He laid her delicate body on the bed, leaned over her, and continued to kiss her.
In the past, Serena would have enjoyed Ethan’s passion.
But now...
Her heart was filled with despair, a tangled mess of pain.
How could she possibly let him touch her now?
Besides, she wasn’t in the mood.
As he kissed her passionately, Serena lay there, turning her head to the side, motionless, and said bleakly:
"Sylvia was right. To you, I was just a tool to ease your loneliness when she wasn’t around."
Hearing this, Ethan froze.
He looked up, his gaze as sharp as a needle.
"Say that again."
Serena met his gaze. Even though she could feel the cold, crushing pressure of his aura, like a mountain bearing down on her, she remained fearless.
"Isn’t it true?"
Ethan’s passion vanished in an instant.
He stood up, his attitude turning cold as he growled at Serena:
"Is that really the image you have of me? Serena Yardley, was all the kindness I showed you in the past for nothing?"
’Great.’
’I’ve managed to make him angry again.’
Ethan turned his back to her, his insides trembling with rage.
"Since you understand your place, then you’ll stay put. I’ve paid for your education for all these years. You can leave when you’ve paid back your debt to me."
He stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
The SLAM made Serena’s entire body tremble.
She lay there, her vision blurred by tears, her body limp as clay.
’So, I can’t leave after all?’
「 ... 」
Ethan returned to his study and slammed his keyboard in anger.
’That damn woman. I treated her so well, and in her eyes, I’m just an animal who only wants to satisfy his desires.’
For some reason, Ethan felt an unbearable tightness in his chest.
Meanwhile, downstairs.
Sylvia and Mrs. Miller returned.
As soon as they entered, they saw a little girl sitting on the living room sofa.
A fair-skinned, pretty, and lively little girl, much like Serena.
The three of them stared at each other.
Mrs. Miller hurried forward and asked, "Who are you, little girl?"
Mrs. Miller had only been hired as a housekeeper after Ethan and Serena got married, so naturally, she didn’t recognize Raina Yardley.
Raina Yardley glanced at the other woman—tall and dressed stylishly—and sized her up before asking:
"And who are you?"
"I’m the housekeeper here. My name is Mrs. Miller. This is Miss Sylvia Schuyler, a friend of Mr. Yardley."
Raina Yardley was speechless.
’Isn’t this Ethan and Serena’s marital home? Why is a female friend of Ethan’s allowed to come and go as she pleases?’
Though she didn’t quite understand, Raina Yardley had a flash of inspiration. "I’m... Serena Yardley’s sister. My name is Raina Yardley."
"Oh? You’re Miss Serena’s sister? Hello, please, have a seat. I’ll go prepare some snacks for you."
"Okay, thank you, ma’am."
As she watched the woman head to the kitchen, Raina turned her gaze back to Sylvia.
Sylvia was also sizing up Raina.
’Serena’s sister?’
’Isn’t Serena an orphan? Where did she get a sister?’
’Or maybe a ’sister’ from the orphanage?’
’What a burden. She can’t even take care of herself, and now she’s bringing her sister over.’
Sylvia stepped forward and sat down next to Raina, asking with the air of the lady of the house, "Why are you here all alone? Where are your sister and Ethan?"
Raina smiled and asked, "And you, ma’am, what’s your relationship with Ethan?"
Sylvia shot Raina a look, her face darkening as she corrected her. "Call me ’sister’. Ethan and I are engaged. Your sister is the mistress, you know?"
Raina’s smile faded. "Did I hear you right? You said my sister is the mistress?"
"That’s right. Your sister stole my man."
"Ethan is *your* man?"
Sylvia maintained her haughty, high-and-mighty demeanor. "That’s right."
"You’re full of shit."
Furious, Raina leaped onto the sofa, grabbed a throw pillow, and started wildly hitting Sylvia with it, shouting:
"You’re the one who looks like a mistress! You shameless woman! How dare you act so arrogantly in front of me! I’m going to teach you a lesson today!"
Sylvia was completely stunned to be suddenly attacked by a child.
When she came to her senses, she quickly stood up to fight back.
But Raina was just a child. How could she win a fight against an adult?
In just a few moves, her small body was pinned to the sofa by Sylvia.
Enraged, Sylvia slapped her twice across her fair little face.
"You’re just like your sister. You both need to be taught a lesson."
Having been slapped for the first time in her life, Raina burst into a hoarse, wailing cry. "WAAAH... Ethan! Ethan, help me!"
In his study, Ethan heard the commotion downstairs.
He rushed out to the top of the stairs just in time to see Sylvia pinning Raina down and hitting her.
He shouted sharply, "Sylvia, stop!"
Sylvia jumped, startled. She hadn’t expected Ethan to be home.
She quickly got up, moving away from the child, and put on a weak, fragile act. "Ethan, it was her..."
Ethan strode quickly down the stairs. When Sylvia moved to meet him, he coldly pushed her aside and went to pick up Raina, asking:
"Raina, where are you hurt?"
Raina’s cheeks were red and swollen, and she was crying convulsively. "She hit my face! My beautiful face hurts so, so much! Ethan, you have to teach her a lesson for me! I want her dead!"
Sylvia immediately came over to defend herself. "Ethan, she hit me first! I was just defending myself."
Ethan was already furious, and now Sylvia had walked right into the line of fire. He couldn’t hold back his rage and exploded at her:
"Do you have any idea who she is? How dare you lay a hand on her! I’m giving you three seconds to get the hell out of here, and don’t you ever set foot in this house again."
