Chapter 824: 821: The First Night (1)
Rhys screamed.
It wasn’t a startled cry or the kind of sound a warrior made when caught off guard.
It was a raw, guttural sound. The kind that tore through the soul.
Everyone spun toward him.
Corey’s eyes widened as black blood poured from Rhys’ eyes.
The man staggered back, clawing at his face.
"My eyes! I can’t! I can’t SEE! SOMETHING’S IN MY HEAD!" He screamed in fear and pain while moving about in a chaotic manner.
Blood ran down his cheeks, then down his neck, soaking the collar of his armor.
He fell to one knee, his shield falling to the ground with a heavy clang.
The rest of the group froze, caught between disbelief and horror.
"Rhys! Hold still!" Kieran barked, moving toward him.
But it was already too late.
With a sickening sound, like wet fruit being carved open, Rhys’ hands pulled away from his face, revealing nothing where his eyes had once been.
Just two deep, hollow sockets like someone had scooped them out with invisible claws.
The bleeding had stopped unnaturally fast, like the wound had been sealed by something other than medicine or magic.
Zeke stepped back in mute horror, nearly stumbling over some rubbles of the clocktower.
"No fucking way..."
Myra cursed under her breath and gripped her spear tightly, her knuckles turning pale.
Aelric stood perfectly still with his lips parted slightly.
For once, even he looked shaken.
Rhys shook violently, muttering incomprehensibly. "I heard it. In my mind... whispering... it said it would take... It said it wanted to see what I saw."
Kieran was silent.
The whole team was.
Even Zeke had gone more pale, his mouth slightly open. "This... this is insane... This was meant to be a normal Gold-rank mission."
No one answered.
Corey could hear Rhys’ heartbeat.
It was chaotic, panicked.
He clenched his fist.
’So this is what the system meant by Something Will Be Taken... This is going to be troublesome... Very troublesome.’
Corey didn’t have time to think. Because the city suddenly shifted.
The road behind them split, opening into a long, narrow gorge that hadn’t existed before.
Lampposts bent in unnatural directions, and the moss on the ground brightened to an eerie green glow.
Then they came.
From the alleys, the rooftops, and the mouths of broken doorways.
Shadows that didn’t match anything nearby began to rise. Bodies formed from torn skin stitched around bone. Some walked backward, some dragged themselves with elongated fingers, some held weapons.
Their eyes glowed with a dirty white light.
They did not moan.
They giggled like little girls and boys.
And their giggles sent shivers down the spines of everybody, including Corey who had experienced a lot in the Underworld.
Their numbers slowly increased.
From dozens to hundreds, to a point where it felt like the entire city was crawling with the monsters of death.
Worst of all, from what Corey could sense, each monster was Tier 3 with some Tier 4s mixed in.
"They’re surrounding us," Yara whispered as she approached the group from the top of the clocktower, her voice barely audible.
She crouched near the edge of the broken clocktower with her daggers in hand. "Too many."
Just as Yara said these words, a giggle echoed from the far right. But this time around, it was distorted and extremely disturbing to hear.
Then the first monster lunged.
"Form up!" Kieran shouted.
Zeke fired, and the twin bangs of his pistols shattering the silence.
The bullets tore through one of the Tier 3 creatures, jerking it backward, but it didn’t fall. It staggered, then started walking again like it hadn’t even noticed.
"Are you kidding me?" Zeke snapped. "It didn’t even flinch!"
The creatures suddenly began running towards the group with disturbing giggles.
The sight of hundreds of grotesque monsters running towards them was extremely disturbing, and it was certain that some would have nightmares of today no matter what.
"Get Rhys behind cover!" Kieran snapped, and they instantly acted.
Myra and Aelric pulled Rhys backward into the corner of the clock tower as Kieran unsheathed his twin sabers.
Blue lightning appeared around his sabers, and he swung his arm, sending two massive arcs of lightning at the incoming horde.
BANG!
BOOM!
CRACKLE!
Buildings and several objects shattered and blew away due to the captain’s attack, and the lightning struck more than a hundred monsters.
Those that bore the full brunt of the attack became charred corpses, especially the Tier 3s.
However, more than 70% of the monsters that were struck were still alive... Much to the shock and disbelief of the captain.
They staggered, and some even fell apart. But within seconds, they reformed.
"Regeneration?" Aelric hissed. "That’s a high level skill, even for undeads."
Corey clicked his tongue, and he summoned a pair of black daggers from his system storage space.
A spark appeared on the daggers, and in the blink of an eye, red flames appeared around the daggers.
He sent a diagonal slash at the incoming horde, and a long fiery slash that split the buildings and ground in two appeared.
The slash travelled close to a half a kilometer, and close to two hundred monsters were damaged by his attack.
Close to a hundred monsters died, and Corey could instantly feel the stares of shock and disbelief coming from his teammates.
Although his expression remained stoic, he was inwardly shaking his head with a wry smile.
He had tried his best to limit the output and power of his attack, but it was still too powerful.
More powerful than the attack Kieran sent out.
’Sigh... Trying to act weak is difficult.’
Although he had this thought, his expression was different.
Sweat began appearing on his forehead, and his breathing became laboured.
He staggered and fell to one knee while still keeping his eyes on the burning horde.
"Fire works better on them."
That was all he said, and Zeke, Kieran, Myra, Aelric, and Yara who had been stunned came out of their stunned state and nodded.
They resumed their attacks on the horde of undead.
