Chapter 40: Chapter FORTY

- KILLIAN -

Kate wasn’t who I wanted to see and seeing her didn’t make me feel any better.

Maybe getting on her good side was a benefit but I feel uneasy. My body is restless and the only name I can think of that makes me feel this way is Hazel.

That girl has bewitched my mind and won’t even let me look at her. She’s keeping her distance and it’s messing with me. I run my hand through my hair in frustration.

Knowing she’d rather be with that blonde than around me is aggravating. I am the reason she’s injured. She bumped into me and I am fucking worried but she’s avoiding me like a plague.

I took a deep breath, pacing in front of the bench, while waiting for the rest of the team. I just hope I get to see her after practice. I scoffed. To think that before now, I was pissed off about something else is amazing.

I heard people chatter along with approaching footsteps and turn to the side. It’s my team alright. They’re making their way here. I raised my hand up a little to stare at the back of my wrist to check the time on my watch. They’re five minutes late but I can utilise the time well.

I run my eyes around the players. The only people I can recognise are Lizzie and Kate.

There’s no Hazel. Did she ditch this round? My brows creased. I’m still searching for her. When no one with her features catches my eyes, I sighed.

She’s not here. I might as well keep my head in the game. The students came closer and stood in front of me in a line before I even uttered a word.

They’re all standing in attention with Thier hands firmly tuck to their sides. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m impressed. Although knowing how to stand properly doesn’t really say much. I need to work on their stamina and other things.

"You all look nicely refreshed." I said, waking in front of them.

"Why wouldn’t we be, we just had a break, plus a hot coach." Someone murmured and everyone laughed.

Kids. Cute.

"Okay, scratch what I said before. Take five laps around the field then meet me when you’re done. We’ll focus more on your shot power and ball control." I stood in front of Kate, staring intensely at her. "I’ll ask again, does anyone here have any knowledge of football?"

"Try calling it soccer, then we’ll give you an answer." She said, raising a brow at me. A few giggles slid in my ears. I roll my eyes steadily, not letting her out of my sight. I leaned my head forward, keeping my face near hers. Because of the arrangement, there is enough space between each student to accommodate my body but just my face will suffice for now. I just want to tell her a few words.

"I need you to know that after school, I’ll get you. Hard." I whispered in her ear. Kate’s eyes widened for a second. Good. That’s way better. "Okay everyone, to the field, I’ll keep my eye on you." I blew the whistle and the girls jugged to the field.

I hate that I have to use this dumbass whistle!

I hate that Hazel is with someone else.

"I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed anything injurious. One of the reasons I’m bad at sports." Hazel’s voice slid in my ears, causing me to turn.

She’s back! My face lit up. My expression immediately dulled when I saw the person beside her.

He just always has to be everywhere.

Hazel is sat on a bench, but all through today, where she is, the man follows. At least Lorelei isn’t here to interrupt me now. I walk to them. Lizzie is no where to be seen so it’s just the three of us, this makes my life a whole lot easier.

"Hi." I said to her, bending lower. My hand reached to her leg where the bandage is at. "How’s your foot?" I ask. Hazel shifts her leg away and cuddled it behind the other. She doesn’t want me touching her.

"It’s fine, sir." She says. This formality really gets on my nerves. I don’t want to make her feel uncomfortable so I stood.

"Thank you for taking care of my student." I said to the blonde. All I feel for him is spite but my face and tone shows none of it.

"It’s my pleasure. It’s the least I could do for her." The blonde says. I don’t want to talk to him but I’m interested in knowing more about him. More like how he and Hazel became acquainted.

I hate that someone like him makes someone like me think this way.

"Killian. A professor." I said to the blonde. He looks at me and stretches a hand forward.

"Kaiden Crest." He says with a grin. I want to wipe that grin off. Kaiden stretches his hand forward for a handshake.

Crest? I raise a brow. I am not too sure but it seems like this blonde is an elite.

I lowered my gaze to see his hand then stared back at his face. I’m not interested in shaking the hand of someone I despise but I don’t want to come off as rude.

Fuck that, I do.

Kaiden dips his hand back in his pocket when I didn’t respond to his gesture. "Not much of a people person, I take it." His attention is directed at the field.

"You have no idea." I responded, looking at the ladies on the field. All through this interaction, I’ve had my eye on them.

"Yet your job requires you to interact with people often. Must be traumatic." He chuckles. I don’t fancy the small talk but if he’s putting an effort to not have an awkward silence, I’ll take it.

"One of life’s controversial things." I said to him without batting an eye from the field.

"Mm." Kaiden murmured. Silence brewed between us for a few seconds. I think it’s time to ask.

"So, why the unexpected visit to the school?" My voice is suave and welcoming.

"My sister is playing. For the first time, she gets to participate in a sport. Big brother is here to cheer for her."

"Having a family member travel all the way here for support definitely raises a child’s spirit." I am cringing on the inside. I have a brother I’d kill for so this is somewhat sweet but having to talk about someone else is not. I just want to know who he is and what sort of relationship he has with Hazel.

I want to believe they’re just friends but with the way they hang out with each other, it doesn’t seem that way and it drives me mad.

"Yeah. It sure is." Kaiden sounds relaxed and excited. He has this boyish tone in his voice. "Hey," He turns to look at me. "What made you think I travelled?"

I gave him a side eye. His curiosity is charming. "Everyone well informed knows a Crest."

He chuckled. "Side effects of my surname."

I raise a brow. He knows what he did when he called out his surname along with his first name when introducing himself to me. This humble pretty boy act doesn’t fool me.

I stared at the lady sitting behind me. It sure fools her. Unless they knew each other before she started attending this school which would make perfect sense.

How Hazel rules my mind still leaves me in awe.

I blew a whistle. The girls were taking their sixth lap around the field. It’s a wide field. Each field is segmented by net-metal fences for every sports team to play in at once and some of the sections are designed for specific sports.

I walk forward, clapping my hands to get their attention while whistling. I took the whistle out of my mouth. "Okay, ladies, gather up." The women stopped running around the field and jugged to meet me. I pointed at a ginger. "Get me some soccer balls."

She nods and darts away to the end of the field where a rectangular plastic basket is at, filled with footballs. Now she’s heading my way with the basket.

"Good. Thank you-"

"Charlotte." She completed. I winked.

"Now all you have to do is-" I said, walking to the center of the field. Everyone followed me. "Kick the ball into the goal post from different angles." I stared at each of them to ensure everyone is following me. They seem to be. "Now, we’re not going to play against each other but I’ll pair you all in twos and swap each member continuously. We’ll start with a direct score. Whoever is not in front of the goal, your main aim is to be the striker. You have one sole responsibility and it’s to score. Are you all with me?"

"Yes sir!" Their voices collided as they screamed.

"Good. Now you two," I say, pointing at Charlotte and another lady. "What’s your name?"

"Rebecca!" She muttered.

"You’re a pair." I said. I started pairing everyone of them randomly. No one’s missing a partner. That’s great. Although one member of the team is injured. I glanced at Hazel. Seeing her smiling with someone else makes my jaw clench.

I quickly avert my gaze.

"The first team should start. Don’t hesitate to kick the ball. The keeper should not hesitate to stop the ball from getting past the goal with whatever means. Just don’t hurt yourself trying." I said and walked backwards, standing in a spot where I can see both the field and everyone around me, while keeping Hazel and Kaiden in sight. Watching her is kinda of distracting. "One more thing ladies, do not kick the ball with your toes." I raise my leg up and tap the side of my foot. "Always your side. Never the toes."

Or at least the top of your foot, but that’s something I’ll educate them about later.

"Choose a role Charlotte and Rebecca." Charlotte stood at a distance in front of the goal post while Rebecca went to the goal. She crouched her back lower, firmened her feet on the ground and stared at Charlotte with determination. That’s a good spirit to have while playing but something tells me she’s taking first practice too serious.

I exhale, watching Charlotte kick. Rebecca swung her body to the side to block her aim and stumbled on the ground. Charlotte’s shot missed the post but I admire the effort. After a few more tries, they’ll get a hand of it.

I avert my gaze back at the lady driving my mind crazy.

Right now, I just want to find a way to talk to her. I need to talk to her and I don’t care how, I just have to.

*

In five minutes, practice will be over and so will classes but I haven’t had a chance to talk to her yet.

Not even once and it’s frustrating.

"For the record, I am not not angry at you." Kate taps my shoulder with two fingers. That did not divert my attention from the woman I’m looking at.

"I’ll meet with you later." I said to Kate, walking to the bench. I know I need to clear things up with Kate but she’s the least of my worries.

Hazel just got up from the bench.

"I swear, if I had a knife, I’ll just-" I heard her voice trail like a whisper. Before I could turn to look at her, something came flying my way. I stopped it with a hand when I noticed two more soccer balls heading to me with speed. I dodged one but the other swoop past me.

I nod my head to the side gently with a raised brow, keeping my eyes on Kate when I heard someone scream behind me. Kate’s eyes widened and her fingers covered her mouth as she stared behind me in horror.

I traced her gaze. My body froze when I saw who screamed. She hit Hazel.

My temper rose. I wanted to walk to Hazel but couldn’t. She’ll push me away anyway.

I just stood there as a crowd surround her. I can’t believe she got hurt because of me. Again.

Hazel’s eyes met mine and for the first time today, she didn’t look away.

A body swoop past me to her. It’s Kate, she ran to Hazel to offer her aid but Hazel declined everyone’s offer. Including the blonde. It’s not something to be happy about but that made my heart rejoice.

She averted her gaze from me and walked away. I’m about to be a stalker right now because I will follow her everywhere till I can get her to stay in one place and talk to me.

I had no idea how badly her ignoring me will affect me till today. And I got to admit, it hurt.

A lot.
