Seraphina's Revenge: A Rebirth In The Apocalypse Novel-Chapter 67: Where To Now?
Sera stepped into the fading light without a word.
The air was dry and overcast, not a single snowflake in sight, just a cold wind curling through the campus like it was trying to remind everyone that even as the world was ending, winter was just beginning.
Her toque was pulled low, shadowing her face, and the black hoodie stuck to her skin from where the blood of Jodie and the others had sprayed out. She didn’t have the time to take a shower, not if she wanted to keep her promise of ten minutes or less, but she knew that the black hoodie was going to keep its secrets, and hers.
Lachlan was already waiting right were she had left him, still staring at the cafeteria doors like she was going to come out of them at any moment.
His hands were shoved deep into his jacket pockets, and though he looked casual, she could tell—he was ready to rip the world in half. His jaw ticked when he saw her coming from a different direction, and he scanned her face. Then lower. Then back up.
"You’re late," he said, voice soft. Controlled.
She shrugged once, letting the strap of her bag slide higher on her shoulder. "I had a bit of an issue," she said softly. "There were a few more zombies inside of the dorm then I thought there would be."
"Any survivors?" demanded a strange man as he approached Sera and Lachlan. Sera narrowed her eyes at him, even as the creature inside of her was dancing a happy dance.
She might not know the man, but her creature was already demanding that she takes him back to the cabin and feed him. Like an Alpha should, agreed the creature.
Great, another mouth to feed.
"There were a few," Sera nodded, briefly glancing over to Lachlan. "Now there are less."
"What happened?" demanded a second man as he stalked over. This one was a bit slimmer than the first, but they both had stunning olive skin and black hair that caused her creature to purr.
She didn’t answer, this time turning around to look at Lachlan, one of her eyebrows raised as if demanding an answer.
"Seraphina," smiled Lachlan, putting an arm around her waist as he turned her to see the other two men. "These are part of my team from the military. This one is Zubair, he likes to think he is in charge, but we all know that he is like the father of the group. Good a grumbling, but hiding a heart of gold."
The first man, easily six foot tall if not more, snorted and rolled his eyes at Lachlan before turning his attention back to her. "Elias asked you a question," he said, his grumbling voice causing her to shiver.
Fuck her life, dealing with Lachlan was bad enough. What did they feed the military guys if all of them were so frigging hot?!?
"I’m sorry," replied Sera, a flat smile on her face as she looked at Zubair. "I didn’t hear it."
The second man snorted, clearly knowing that she was lying through her teeth, but he simply shook his head. "I had asked what happened. I see that you have blood all over you, are you injured? I can help. I’m the team medic."
She blinked, surprised. She really would have thought that he was a one word answer type of guy. Apparently, she was wrong.
"Zombies hit us hard on the fourth floor," she stared, even as Noah and a fifth man approached. "I wasn’t able to save them."
"Really?" sneered Noah. "Are you sure about that? I mean, I don’t really see you as the savior type. Maybe you threw them at the zombies just to save yourself."
"Dat what happened?" asked the fifth man, his eyes narrowing on me like he was trying to read my mind.
"Alexei," chuckled Lachlan softly, but Sera didn’t think that she was the only one to hear the threat behind that one word. "She is the one who warned us about what was going to happen. She is the one who is offering her own house. Just because her and Noah don’t get along, doesn’t mean you can take his side."
"But he does have a good point," said Elias, looking her up and down. "You don’t get that much blood on you by just being in proximity. Not to mention, zombies aren’t really known for letting people just leave."
"Have you met a lot of zombies then?" Sera asked, jerking her thumb to across the parking lot where three zombies were currently snacking on three bodies. "They don’t leave a meal to try and hunt down another one. They killed the girls, my old roommate included and let me leave simply because they were already enjoying their meal."
The fifth man, Alexei, gave her a half smirk as he let out a low whistle. "You got me there. Do you think I should take this opportunity to kill them? Three less zombies are a plus in my books."
"Have fought any of them yet?" sneered Lachlan, rolling his eyes as he pushed Sera toward the Hummer.
"I’ve filled them up with bullets, that didn’t do to badly," sneered Alexei, following behind Lachlan.
"I’m also guessing that you didn’t stick around and find out," chuckled Lachlan. After he had made sure that Sera was secured inside of his car, he turned his attention back to his friend. "Bullets don’t kill them. I don’t actually know what does."
"Bullets to the brain always kills zombies," snorted Noah as he tried to climb in the back seat of the Hummer. "Haven’t you seen the movies?"
"Movies and reality aren’t the same, mate," sneered Lachlan. "You saw them in the gym, they didn’t go down easily."
"We didn’t have our guns," reminded Noah.
Sera let out a frustrated sigh as she got out of the Hummer and took the handgun from Lachlan’s hip holster. Holding it up, ignoring the releasing of safeties as Zubair, Elias, and Alexei trained their guns on her, she unloaded the clip into one of the zombies eating. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
The men around her blinked as its head exploded, only to knit back together in less than a second. The zombie let out a roar of outrage and the interruption. It came to is feet in a flash and before Lachlan could pull Sera behind him, the zombie was already in front of them.
"Get in the cars!" hollered Zubair as all five men emptied their guns into the zombie right in front of them. The sound of the bullets, the heat coming off of it, the smell of the zombie’s flesh being torn into became a bit much.
Sera didn’t argue, she just got inside and buckled up as the others did a coordinated operation so that everyone was in a vehicle in less than a minute.
Lachlan tore out of the parking lot behind the dorm, and raced back down the hill toward the main road.
"Fucking shit," growled Alexei, turning around to see the zombie coming to its feet, shaking its head. "It didn’t die."
"Told ya so," grumbled Lachlan. He briefly glanced in the rearview mirror to see Zubair and his SUV behind them. "Where to?" he continued, looking at Sera.
"Home," she sighed, closing her eyes. "We’ll regroup there and plan out tomorrow. It’s getting dark now, we won’t want to be out too much later."
