Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Pinning Her Down and Pressing Down

Wren Sutton ignored Adrian Lancaster’s sharp, cold gaze and answered the phone right in front of him.

Sean Sterling had been keeping track of the time. When he still hadn’t heard from Wren Sutton, he decided to call her himself.

He just wanted to ask if she and Lucia had gotten home safely.

"Sean, don’t worry. I brought Lucia back and just got her settled into bed," Wren Sutton said.

Sean Sterling was relieved. "Good. I can rest easy now that you’re home. Get some sleep. Good night."

"Good night."

Wren Sutton hung up the phone, a soft, gentle smile playing on her lips.

Adrian Lancaster’s face was darker than a thundercloud. His jaw was clenched, its line sharp and taut.

Wren Sutton’s cheerful expression grated on him, leaving him deeply annoyed.

’Just one phone call and she’s this happy,’ he thought. ’And yet, she hasn’t smiled at me in so long.’

"How did Sean know you were bringing Lucia back?" 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Wren Sutton put her phone away and looked up at Adrian Lancaster. "You have the nerve to ask that?"

"..."

"If Sean hadn’t stepped in, Lucia and I might not have even made it back."

Adrian Lancaster frowned. After a moment’s thought, he guessed, "Did you and Lucia run into trouble at the bar?"

Wren Sutton couldn’t be bothered to explain the details and just gave a noncommittal "Mhm."

This made Adrian Lancaster even more furious. He growled, "Then why didn’t you tell me? Why did you tell Sean Sterling instead? I’m your husband, and I’m Lucia’s brother."

Wren Sutton almost laughed out of sheer anger. It was like punching cotton—the feeling of powerlessness only made her more exhausted.

"Oh, so you do know who you are. For a moment there, I thought you’d forgotten."

"Don’t change the subject." Adrian Lancaster’s gaze was piercing. "Answer the question."

"What’s done is done. What more do you want me to say?"

Adrian Lancaster reached out and grabbed Wren Sutton’s chin. His breath, hot with anger, washed over her face.

"Why would you rather ask Sean Sterling for help than yield to me?"

Wren Sutton felt utterly exhausted, mentally and physically. She didn’t even have the energy to argue.

’What’s the point of figuring out who was right or wrong now?’

"I called you five times."

Wren Sutton left it at that, saying no more.

Adrian Lancaster’s heart dropped, and his pupils contracted.

"You called me?"

His tone was one of shock and disbelief.

Wren Sutton gave a cold, sarcastic laugh. "Believe it or not."

A complex mix of emotions washed over Adrian Lancaster. After a moment of silence, he released her chin.

"It must have been a signal issue. I didn’t get your calls."

He stated it as a fact, utterly self-righteous, placing all the blame on his phone.

Wren Sutton hadn’t expected an apology or any self-reflection from Adrian Lancaster. That would only happen when pigs fly.

She no longer cared whether he’d genuinely not received the calls or had just made up an excuse.

"Then you should probably consider getting a new phone."

"..." Adrian Lancaster heard the undisguised mockery in Wren Sutton’s voice. She clearly didn’t believe him. He suppressed his temper, refusing to stoop to her level, and couldn’t be bothered to explain himself again.

Wren Sutton had nothing more to say. She turned and walked into the master bedroom.

She hadn’t planned on sleeping in the master bedroom tonight. She was just grabbing her pajamas from the walk-in closet, but when she came out, Adrian Lancaster was blocking the doorway.

He watched her with a dark expression. "Where are you going?"

Wren Sutton remained calm and composed. "Lucia’s drunk. I don’t feel comfortable leaving her to sleep alone."

Even if Adrian Lancaster hadn’t come home tonight, she still would have gone to stay with Lucia.

Adrian Lancaster didn’t budge. "Nanny Lawson will stay with Lucia."

Wren Sutton retorted, "Nanny Lawson is getting on in years. She’s worked hard all day. Do you really have the heart to make her stay up all night looking after someone who’s drunk?"

Adrian Lancaster’s expression was cold as he looked at the defiant, stubborn woman before him. A sudden surge of anger ignited within him.

On top of tonight’s events, he remembered how she’d put the blue diamond necklace up for sale online without his permission, trampling all over his feelings. This fueled his rage even more.

Without any warning, Adrian Lancaster swept Wren Sutton into his arms, slammed the door shut with a BANG, and strode toward the large bed in the center of the room.

Wren Sutton was furious and humiliated, but she didn’t dare struggle too violently. A sense of panic began to set in.

"What is wrong with you now? Put me down."

"Nanny Lawson and Lucia are both here. You..."

Before she could finish her sentence, Adrian Lancaster threw her onto the bed. He pinned her down, leaning over her...
