Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Fury on the Brink, Emotion Triumphs Over Reason

As Adrian Lancaster’s date, Maya Marshall was escorted by staff members even to the restroom.

Four women surrounded her like a queen bee, a scene that was as ridiculous as it was ostentatious.

Maya Marshall, arrogant and self-important, clearly reveled in the attention.

"I can’t believe Adrian Lancaster actually likes a woman like her. He has terrible taste," Isla Griffith said with a look of disgust.

Wren Sutton looked away, afraid another glance might make her sick.

"She’s fearless because she knows she’s loved. Even if she were a piece of crap, Adrian Lancaster would think she smells like roses."

Isla Griffith gave a thumbs-up. "Perfectly put. That makes Adrian Lancaster a dog."

After a moment, she arched an eyebrow, her interest piqued.

"I’m a little curious. How do you think Maya Marshall would feel if she knew the necklace she’s wearing was bought from you?"

Before Wren Sutton could answer, Maya Marshall suddenly whipped her head around as if she’d sensed something. Her gaze was hostile, a mix of surprise, disgust, and loathing.

Head high and chest out, she strode over in her high heels.

Wren Sutton and Isla Griffith didn’t look away, watching her approach with cool expressions.

"What are you two doing here?" Maya Marshall’s brow furrowed. "You must have snuck in when security wasn’t looking."

Tonight’s show was a gathering of A-listers. It was an exclusive event, not some ordinary fashion show. Tickets were nearly impossible to get.

If Adrian Lancaster hadn’t brought her, she would have had a hard time getting an invitation herself.

’I couldn’t manage it, yet these two bitches, Wren Sutton and Isla Griffith, have. How can I possibly accept that?’

’I wish I could have security throw them out.’

Wren Sutton remained calm and collected. "We came in with an invitation."

"Who got you the invitation?" Maya Marshall demanded, desperate to know.

Wren Sutton let out a cold laugh, her tone taunting. "Who do you think?"

She was intentionally letting Maya Marshall jump to the wrong conclusion.

’Perfect,’ Isla Griffith thought to herself. ’This is exactly how you handle a mistress.’

Sure enough, the color drained from Maya Marshall’s face.

"You’ve got some nerve, asking Adrian for a favor."

Wren Sutton shot back with three words: "Look who’s talking."

Humiliated, Maya Marshall flew into a rage, her composure nearly shattering.

Just then, a few onlookers began to chide Wren Sutton.

"You really don’t know how to appreciate kindness."

"That was her just now! She called Ms. Marshall a mistress and said President Lancaster was cheating on his wife. President Lancaster isn’t even married, so how could he be cheating?"

"She even claimed to know President Lancaster’s wife. How ridiculous."

"Only an idiot would believe her."

At these words, Maya Marshall’s anger vanished, replaced by a smug satisfaction.

Brimming with confidence, she adopted a gentle tone. "You should all just treat that as a joke and not take it seriously. The second half of the show is about to begin. Let’s all return to our seats."

"Ms. Marshall, we all believe that you and President Lancaster are truly in love! If you don’t mind us asking, when are you getting married?"

Maya Marshall blushed shyly and deliberately glanced down at the blue diamond necklace around her neck.

"Soon."

"Is that necklace a symbol of your engagement?"

"Mhm. It’s my engagement gift from him."

"Wow, that’s so romantic!"

The excited onlookers chattered as they returned to the showroom. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Maya Marshall dismissed her four attendants as well.

Only she, Wren Sutton, and Isla Griffith remained in the now empty, quiet corridor.

The atmosphere was tense.

Wren Sutton hadn’t expected Adrian Lancaster to have already proposed to Maya Marshall. Her gaze fell on Maya’s stomach, and in an instant, she understood.

’Adrian Lancaster loves Maya Marshall so much, he’d definitely want to hold the wedding before she starts showing. Otherwise, his precious woman wouldn’t look good in her wedding dress.’

A dull ache started in Wren Sutton’s heart, and a similar throbbing sensation spread to her lower abdomen.

’Adrian Lancaster really has no regard for me at all. He couldn’t even wait for the divorce to be final before proposing to Maya Marshall.’

’But, this just means that when the thirty-day cooling-off period is over, getting Adrian Lancaster to go to the Civil Affairs Bureau and finalize the divorce will be easy.’

"See this diamond necklace? A hundred million. Adrian gave it to me."

Maya Marshall continued to gloat, the very picture of a petty victor.

"He gives me whatever I want. Can you say the same?"

Wren Sutton placed a restraining hand on Isla Griffith, who looked ready to lash out on her behalf, and shot her a look, warning her not to be impulsive.

Isla Griffith forced herself to swallow her anger and stay quiet.

Wren Sutton faced Maya Marshall alone, her cold gaze sweeping over the brilliant necklace on the other woman’s neck.

"Do you know where Adrian Lancaster bought that necklace?"

Maya Marshall crossed her arms, striking a victorious pose.

"Where he bought it doesn’t matter. What matters is that it belongs to me now."

Wren Sutton stared at her, deciding to cut to the chase. Her expression was inscrutable.

"He bought it from me."

Maya Marshall’s eyes widened in shock. "Impossible! You’re lying! I don’t believe you.

"The deal took place at the teahouse across from The Rhodes Group. Adrian Lancaster didn’t come himself; he had a man named Zhong handle it."

Wren Sutton then took the check from her purse, unfolded it, and held it out for Maya Marshall to see.

"Believe me now?"

Maya Marshall was stunned speechless. Her blood boiled, her face went white, and she felt the stinging humiliation of being utterly put in her place.

’I still don’t want to believe it, but everything Wren Sutton said adds up. How else can this be explained?’

Having made her point, Wren Sutton said no more and pulled Isla Griffith away to leave.

As they brushed past Maya Marshall, Isla Griffith couldn’t hold back a sneer. "You take someone else’s cast-offs, treat them like treasure, and flaunt them everywhere... even right in front of the original owner. You’ve really got some nerve, Ms. Marshall."

Her words were like fuel to the fire. Furious, Maya Marshall grabbed Isla Griffith’s arm.

"Who the hell do you think you are, mocking me?"

Isla Griffith glanced down at the hand on her arm with disgust. "Let go."

Maya Marshall couldn’t swallow the insult. "Apologize."

"Are you insane?"

"You’re the one who’s insane!"

Wren Sutton frowned. "Maya Marshall, don’t start trouble. Let go of my friend."

The taunts had clearly gotten to Maya Marshall. She looked crazed. "You two think you can provoke me and then just walk away? Dream on."

Wren Sutton reined in her temper, not wanting to make a scene.

"I’ll say it again. Let go."

"No." Maya Marshall’s gaze was defiant. With Adrian Lancaster nearby in the showroom, she was certain Wren Sutton wouldn’t dare do anything to her.

Wren Sutton saw right through her. She was sick of Maya’s ugly, power-tripping attitude.

The sight of that blue diamond necklace around her neck was the final straw. The anger smoldering inside Wren Sutton erupted. Emotion overriding reason, she grabbed a handful of Maya Marshall’s hair and, with a cold expression, yanked her to the side.

"I hate people who don’t listen to reason. You asked for this."

Maya Marshall shrieked in pain. Her scalp tingled, and tears streamed down her face as she instinctively let go of Isla.

"AHHH! Wren Sutton, you bitch! I’ll kill you!"

She raised her hand to strike Wren Sutton, but Wren, with her quick reflexes, caught her wrist and flung her arm away.

Maya Marshall staggered back a few steps. Her heels were so high she nearly lost her footing and fell.

This was the scene that greeted Adrian Lancaster as he rushed over.

"Stop!"

His sharp voice cut through the air like a knife, filled with immense authority.

Wren Sutton turned to meet a pair of deep, dark eyes. He was looking at her, his gaze utterly devoid of warmth.

The air around them seemed to freeze in an instant.
