Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Young Madam Threw Up

Wren Sutton froze, her heart racing.

It was the voice of a child, calling her "Mommy"...

In the unseen world, it felt as if a mysterious force had forged a bond with her. Blood is thicker than water, a connection that couldn’t be ignored.

Wren Sutton was a staunch atheist who had never believed in ghosts or spirits.

But now, she heard a child’s call, begging her over and over not to abandon him, not to cast him aside.

Her hands began to tremble uncontrollably, and a thin sheen of sweat beaded on her forehead. Her heart twisted into a tight knot.

She was overcome with a panic and confusion she had never felt before, utterly at a loss.

Wren Sutton knew the child was innocent, but...

"What’s wrong?" Adrian Lancaster noticed something was off with Wren Sutton. He frowned slightly and asked with concern, "Are you not feeling well?"

He reached out to touch her forehead.

No fever.

Wren Sutton snapped back to her senses. She calmed herself and placed the pill on the nightstand.

The abdominal pain subsided instantly.

’It’s a miracle!’

"My stomach hurts a little." She got out of bed, her hand naturally resting on her abdomen. The gesture felt completely right.

"I’m going to the bathroom first. I’ll take the medicine when I come out."

A stomachache was a normal symptom of a digestive problem.

Adrian Lancaster didn’t suspect a thing, nor did he give it much thought.

Wren Sutton walked into the bathroom and locked the door behind her.

She stood before the mirror, looking down at her stomach. Beneath her palm was a tiny life, connected to her heart to heart.

A mix of emotions washed over Wren Sutton. Her eyes grew hot and red-rimmed.

"Baby, I’m so sorry, Mommy..."

She trailed off, choked with sorrow. Her heart felt like it was being torn apart, and tears blurred her vision.

’Why would God play such a cruel joke on me, making my heart suffer such torment?’

...

Wren Sutton stayed in the bathroom for over half an hour before coming out.

She had deliberately applied a layer of foundation to her face to hide the fact that she had been crying.

Returning to the bedside, Wren Sutton saw the pill on the nightstand. Without hesitation, she picked it up, crushed it in her hand, and threw it into the trash can.

She went downstairs.

Wren Sutton thought Adrian Lancaster had already left, so she was shocked to see him cooking in the kitchen.

She stood frozen in place, stunned, unable to believe her eyes.

’Adrian Lancaster is cooking?’

’He actually knows how to cook?’

In their four years of marriage, Adrian Lancaster had never once set foot in the kitchen. Wren Sutton had made all three meals a day. He was only responsible for eating; he couldn’t even be bothered to carry the dishes to the table.

She had always assumed he didn’t know how to cook.

...

Just as Wren Sutton was still reeling from the shock, Adrian Lancaster walked out of the kitchen carrying two simple meals.

Seeing her standing there motionless, he spoke in a gentle tone, "Come and eat."

Wren Sutton had originally planned to make her own breakfast, but since a meal was already prepared, she didn’t stand on ceremony and walked toward the dining room.

The breakfast Adrian Lancaster made was simple yet nutritious.

A bacon, cheese, and fried egg sandwich, accompanied by five pan-fried jumbo shrimp, a few broccoli florets, and a cluster of cherry tomatoes.

The colorful arrangement was very appetizing, though she had no idea how it would taste.

"I’ll go get the soup. You can start eating."

Adrian Lancaster brought out a bowl of millet porridge and placed it in front of Wren Sutton. He was having coffee himself.

"Millet porridge is good for your stomach. There’s more in the pot, so have another bowl when you’re done."

"Oh, thank you."

Wren Sutton was a little flattered, experiencing Adrian Lancaster’s service for the first time.

She was already starving, so she didn’t hold back, eating and drinking with refined table manners.

’She had to admit, the breakfast Adrian made was actually quite good.’

The shrimp, especially, were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, not at all greasy. Remarkably, they were seasoned all the way through.

’Delicious.’

The sandwich was good too. The texture was just right—a crispy, crunchy bite gave way to a soft, almost gooey center, leaving a fragrant taste in her mouth.

Seeing her eat with such relish, Adrian Lancaster’s mood improved, and his gaze softened.

"How does it taste? Is it to your liking?"

Wren Sutton swallowed the food in her mouth, took a sip of porridge, and then managed to offer just two words in response.

"It’s okay."

Adrian Lancaster raised an eyebrow, looking at her. "Just okay?"

Her words belied her thoughts. "Mm, just okay."

Adrian Lancaster silently withdrew his gaze and took a sip of his coffee.

’So bitter.’

Wren Sutton saw his slight frown; he was clearly not satisfied with her answer.

His faintly disappointed expression was a mirror image of how she used to be.

She had cooked for Adrian Lancaster for four years and had never once received a single word of praise from him.

’He makes one meal and expects her praise? In his dreams.’

Adrian Lancaster, unaware of Wren Sutton’s petty thoughts, finished his sandwich with a sullen face, not touching anything else on his plate.

Wren Sutton paid him no mind, finished her millet porridge, and went to the kitchen to get another bowl.

Returning to the dining room, driven by curiosity, she couldn’t help but ask Adrian Lancaster, "When did you learn how to cook?"

’And to do it so well, too.’

As if he had finally found an opportunity to show off, Adrian Lancaster leaned back arrogantly, his fingers tapping nonchalantly on the tabletop.

"Anyone with hands can do it. Does it really require special training?"

Wren Sutton: "..."

’Fine. I was just asking for a snub. I shouldn’t have even asked.’

She lowered her head to drink her porridge and rolled her eyes.

Neither of them spoke.

A moment later, Adrian Lancaster set down his coffee cup and glanced at his watch.

"Did you take your pre-meal medicine?"

Without batting an eye, Wren Sutton answered readily, "I did."

"Remember to take the post-meal medicine later, too."

"Mm-hm."

Adrian Lancaster stood up. His tall, straight posture and innate noble air exuded the charm of a mature man in every movement.

"I’m heading to the office. Nanny Lawson will be here in a bit."

Nanny Lawson was a maid from the old family residence.

Wren Sutton looked up in confusion. "Is Nanny Lawson coming for a particular reason?"

"You’re sick. Nanny Lawson is coming to take care of you for a few days. She’ll go back when you’ve recovered."

Nanny Lawson’s arrival meant Wren Sutton couldn’t return to the Sutton Family’s home for the time being. She would have to stay here every day.

She didn’t want to.

"There’s no need to trouble Nanny Lawson. I can just go back to my mom’s place. She can take care of me."

A cold glint flashed in Adrian Lancaster’s eyes, and an oppressive aura washed over her.

"Are you trying to find any excuse you can to leave this house? Is this place not good enough for you, or what?"

Wren Sutton didn’t argue with him.

"You’ve misunderstood. That’s not what I meant. Nanny Lawson is Grandma’s personal maid. If she comes to take care of me, who will take care of Grandma?"

Adrian Lancaster’s expression softened slightly, but he still wasn’t pleased.

It wasn’t that he forbade Wren Sutton from returning to her family’s home, but he wouldn’t allow her to live there long-term. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

She had been staying at her parents’ house for long enough recently. Her heart had run wild, to the point she’d forgotten that *this* was her home.

"The old residence has plenty of maids. I was originally going to send just anyone over, but when Grandma heard you weren’t well, she was worried and specifically requested Nanny Lawson to come. If you have a problem with it, you can call Grandma and tell her yourself."

After saying this, Adrian Lancaster turned and walked away, essentially declaring that the matter was settled with no room for discussion.

Wren Sutton: "..."

It wasn’t that she didn’t dare to call the matriarch, but she was afraid that saying too much would arouse suspicion.

Besides, since it was a kind gesture from Grandma, she was afraid that rejecting it would hurt her grandmother-in-law’s feelings.

Wren Sutton leaned back in her chair and sighed helplessly.

「An hour later.」

Nanny Lawson arrived, pulling a suitcase behind her.

Although she was a maid, she held a high status in the Lancaster family. Even Adrian Lancaster treated her with great respect.

Wren Sutton greeted her warmly at the door. "Nanny Lawson, thank you for making this trip."

Nanny Lawson had a kind face and treated Wren Sutton like her own daughter.

"You’re too kind, Young Madam. It is my good fortune to be able to come and care for you."

Wren Sutton took Nanny Lawson’s arm and led her inside.

"It is my good fortune that you’ve come."

Nanny Lawson’s heart warmed at her words.

Wren Sutton was about to take Nanny Lawson upstairs to pick a room, but Nanny Lawson staunchly refused, insisting on staying in the maid’s room on the first floor.

Wren Sutton didn’t press the issue and respected Nanny Lawson’s decision.

"Young Madam, what would you like for lunch? I’ll go prepare it."

Wren Sutton thought for a moment, but before she could speak, a wave of nausea washed over her. She covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom.

Having been through this before, Nanny Lawson immediately guessed what was happening.

Just then, the matriarch called, and Nanny Lawson answered.

"How is Wren? Is it serious?"

Nanny Lawson only knew that Wren Sutton was feeling unwell; she didn’t know it was supposedly a digestive issue.

She couldn’t hide her delight. "The Young Madam just threw up. I think she’s pregnant."

The matriarch was even more thrilled. "Really? That’s wonderful! Go take care of her right away. I’m bringing the family doctor over immediately."
