Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 39: Two of a Kind
Wren Sutton came out of the stall. As she was washing her hands, the door behind her was suddenly shut.
She looked up and saw Maya Marshall in the mirror, leaning lazily against the wall by the door, her arms crossed and a contemptuous look in her eyes.
"You actually have the nerve to give Lucia such a cheap watch."
"Lucia was just saving face for you when she said that in front of everyone. You didn’t actually take her seriously, did you?"
Wren Sutton averted her gaze and continued washing her hands.
Maya Marshall’s words had no effect on her; she wasn’t angry at all.
"What I give Lucia is none of your business. You’re in no position to criticize."
Maya Marshall’s expression remained unchanged as she scoffed.
"You really think you’re one of the Lancasters, don’t you? You must be so proud that Lucia calls you her sister-in-law. *I’m* the one who should be her sister-in-law. You just got lucky and swooped in. Don’t flatter yourself."
Wren Sutton turned off the faucet, flicked her hands dry, and pulled out a paper towel. She wiped her hands unhurriedly, perfectly calm and composed.
"If you want to be Lucia’s sister-in-law, it’s simple. Marry Adrian Lancaster, and you’re all set. As for whether Lucia will acknowledge you, you’ll have to ask her. That’s not my call to make."
"You..." Maya Marshall was incensed. Seething with resentment, she glared at Wren Sutton with hatred.
"I was supposed to marry into the Lancaster family! You ruined everything, stole my position, and stole my man! What right do you have to stand here and say these things to me?"
Wren Sutton tossed the paper towel into the bin and gave her a cool glance.
"Don’t you get tired of saying the same thing over and over? I have it memorized by now. Maybe try some new material next time."
Humiliated and enraged, Maya Marshall snapped, "Are you mocking me?"
Wren couldn’t be bothered to argue with her. "Move. You’re blocking the way."
Fuming, Maya Marshall blocked the doorway, refusing to move an inch.
"I’m not moving. What are you going to do about it?"
"Then don’t blame me for getting physical."
"You wouldn’t dare!" Maya Marshall didn’t believe Wren would actually touch her.
"Adrian is right outside. All I have to do is scream and he’ll come running..."
Wren’s face turned cold. Without another word, she grabbed Maya Marshall’s arm and shoved her aside.
In her high heels, Maya Marshall nearly stumbled and fell.
Wren pulled the door open and walked out.
Maya Marshall steadied herself against the wall, fuming and cursing inside the restroom. "Wren Sutton, you bitch!"
...
Wren made her way back to the party. She saw that Sean Sterling and Caleb Caldwell had arrived and were now chatting with Adrian Lancaster.
Lucia Lancaster was surrounded by friends, laughing and chatting away.
Wren didn’t join them. Wanting a moment of peace, she turned and headed for the food and lounge area.
She had rushed out that morning without eating and was feeling a bit hungry. She picked out a few small cakes with different flavors, grabbed a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, and sat down in a nearby chair to eat and drink in peace.
From a distance, Wren saw Maya Marshall walk over to Adrian, a wronged look on her face as she said something to him.
Wren turned away. ’Out of sight, out of mind.’ She continued to eat.
「A moment later.」
"Wren." Caleb Caldwell’s voice came from behind her.
Wren turned around to see him waving at her, his laughter bright and cheerful.
Sean Sterling looked over as well, offering her a small smile and a nod.
Wren smiled back at them both in greeting.
To her surprise, Caleb jogged right over and sat down beside her.
"Wren, what are you doing over here all by yourself? For a second, I thought I had the wrong person."
"I’m a little hungry, so I came to get something to eat."
Caleb glanced at the delicate cakes on her plate and suddenly felt a bit hungry himself.
"I’m going to grab something to eat, too."
They sat facing each other, chatting as they ate.
Wren found herself laughing from time to time at things Caleb said. A smile played on her lips, and her mood was light.
Adrian Lancaster saw this from a short distance away.
His brow furrowed. A flicker of displeasure sparked within him.
’How can Wren get along and chat with everyone, but not with me?’
’She hasn’t said a single word to me since she arrived, and she’s even deliberately avoiding me.’
Adrian’s dark eyes grew stormy, and he started walking in their direction.
Maya Marshall hurried after him. "Adrian, where are you going? Wait for me!"
Wren was in the middle of a lively chat with Caleb when Adrian suddenly appeared before her. His expression was stern, and he looked down at her, his dark, heavy eyes fixed on hers.
Wren looked up, and their eyes met.
...
’What’s with that look? He looks like a dean scolding a misbehaving student.’
’Am I not allowed to sit here and eat?’
’Or am I not allowed to talk to Caleb?’
Then she saw Maya Marshall hurrying over behind him, and it all clicked into place.
’So Adrian came over to stand up for his darling.’
’He really treats Maya like the apple of his eye. I just gave her a little push—she didn’t fall, she wasn’t hurt—and he’s so heartbroken he can’t stand it, so he storms over here to settle the score.’
Wren wasn’t angry, and she certainly wasn’t jealous. She just felt a pang of heartache.
She averted her gaze, wanting neither to look at him nor speak to him.
Caleb immediately sensed the tense atmosphere. He quickly stood up and offered his seat to Adrian.
"Bro, are you hungry, too? Let me make some room for you. You can sit next to Wren."
"No need. You stay where you are. Adrian will sit with me," Maya declared possessively, asserting her claim right in front of Wren.
Caleb: "..." ’This is giving me a headache.’
Just then, Sean Sterling came over. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"What’s everyone gathered here for? Lucia’s about to cut the cake and pour the champagne."
Adrian didn’t move, and neither did anyone else. Sean had no idea what was going on.
"What’s going on? Come on, let’s go. It’s about to start."
Wren shot up from her seat and was the first to leave, heading over without a single glance back.
It finally dawned on Sean. He looked at Adrian. "Did you two have another fight?"
Adrian ignored him, turning and walking away with a stone-cold expression.
Maya hurried after him.
She hadn’t taken two steps before she heard Sean say to Caleb behind her, "See that? Birds of a feather flock together. That couple, they’re each more stubborn than the last."
Maya’s expression turned ugly. She clenched her fists so hard her teeth ground in frustration.
’Why is everyone on that bitch Wren’s side?’
’Lucia wasn’t enough, and now Caleb and Sean are, too.’
’They all used to dote on me, treating me like I was Adrian’s woman.’
’Now, all the special treatment and privileges that should have been mine have been stolen by Wren.’
Maya couldn’t accept it. She just couldn’t!
The party reached its peak amidst the cheerful buzz of blowing out candles, making wishes, cutting the cake, and pouring champagne.
Lucia, the star of the show, stood in the center of the crowd, laughing without a care in the world as cameras captured her joyful moments.
Wren was swept up in the mood, feeling genuinely happy for Lucia. It was almost like she was reminiscing about a past version of herself.
In the crowd, Lucia spotted Wren at once. She was standing alone, while her brother, Adrian, was next to Maya Marshall—or more accurately, Maya was clinging tightly to his arm, refusing to let go.
Lucia frowned. ’This isn’t right,’ she thought. ’I have to find a way to let everyone here know that Wren is the true Young Madam of the Lancaster family.’
