Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 34: Being Lovesick is Terrifying
Kevin Dawson stepped out of President Lancaster’s office, his eyes instinctively scanning the secretaries’ area, but he didn’t spot Wren Sutton.
He didn’t think much of it, assuming she had to step out for something. He looked away, returned to his office, and picked up his phone to book a restaurant.
No one else in the company knew about Adrian Lancaster and Wren Sutton’s relationship, so he was always the one in charge of booking restaurants.
...
Wren Sutton slept at home for two days, living like a queen—waited on hand and foot.
Mrs. Sutton prepared a different spread for her at every meal, all of it made with nourishing ingredients considered beneficial for a woman’s health.
Mr. Sutton even stopped going out to fish, staying home to chat and play chess with his daughter, occasionally offering a few comments on the delicate relations between world powers.
Wren Sutton reflected with a sigh. ’Isn’t this the exact life I led every day before I got married?’
’Carefree, joyful, and unrestrained. Surrounded by love and happiness, as vibrant as a ray of sunshine.’
Ever since marrying Adrian Lancaster, she had become timid and cautious, terrified of doing anything that might displease him. Whether at home or at the office, she had been as obedient as a marionette, hanging on his every word.
On top of that, she had to swallow her pride and try to please her mother-in-law.
Wren Sutton couldn’t even remember how many thankless things she had done or how much humiliation she had swallowed.
Even when Adrian Lancaster saw Ms. Sterling giving her a hard time, he remained indifferent, coldly walking away and leaving her to deal with it on her own.
Wren Sutton sighed self-deprecatingly. ’Being blinded by love is a truly terrible thing.’
’Every time I look back, I don’t understand what I was even holding on for.’
While she was lost in her turbulent thoughts, Kevin Dawson called.
Wren Sutton answered, curious. ’He must be back in the country,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, he wouldn’t be calling me.’
"Assistant Dawson, what is it?"
"Mrs. Lancaster, President Lancaster has invited you to dinner tonight. He booked a table at Xylos."
Xylos was the most luxurious Western-style restaurant in all of Aston.
Wren Sutton froze for a moment.
The next second, she refused without the slightest hesitation. "Tell Adrian Lancaster I’m not going."
’He probably invited Maya Marshall first,’ she thought. ’And since she couldn’t make it, he remembered me.’
"..." Kevin Dawson was incredulous.
This was the first time he had ever heard Wren Sutton refuse Adrian Lancaster. It was completely out of character.
’Is she joking?’
"If you don’t go, President Lancaster will be disappointed." ’And furious,’ he added silently.
Wren Sutton’s expression was impassive. She was silent for a moment.
’Kevin Dawson is just the messenger,’ she thought. ’There’s no need to make things difficult for him. The one I hate is Adrian Lancaster.’
"I understand."
She didn’t explicitly say whether she would go.
Sure enough, Kevin Dawson misunderstood and continued, "I’ll arrange for a driver to pick you up later."
"That won’t be necessary."
Kevin Dawson didn’t press the issue, respecting her wishes. "All right."
Wren Sutton hung up, tossed the phone aside, and lay on her bed staring at the ceiling.
’Just because Adrian Lancaster asks me out, does that mean I have to go?’
’So what if he’s disappointed? Haven’t I been disappointed countless times?’
’In the past, when I asked him out, he didn’t always show up. He’d stand me up without a second thought, brushing me off with a simple "I forgot" or "I was too busy." Who ever felt sorry for me then?’
Just then, Mrs. Sutton knocked on her door.
"Nina, your father and I are going to the supermarket. We’re having hot pot at home tonight."
Wren Sutton snapped out of her reverie.
"Okay."
’I’d much rather have hot pot with my parents than a fancy dinner with Adrian Lancaster. I should save my time for the people who truly love me.’
...
Night fell, and the sky filled with a myriad of stars.
Adrian Lancaster arrived at Xylos half an hour early.
The décor was romantic and luxurious. He had a prime table by the window, which offered a dazzling view of the city’s glittering waterfront.
A waiter approached respectfully and presented the menu.
Adrian Lancaster ordered several of the restaurant’s signature dishes, choosing based on both his and Wren Sutton’s preferences.
"My wife hasn’t arrived yet. You can start bringing out the food once she’s here."
"Of course, sir." The waiter retreated.
Adrian Lancaster glanced at his watch, waiting patiently for Wren Sutton.
’She must be at home, taking her time getting ready,’ he mused. ’She probably wants to surprise me, to look her best.’
The corner of Adrian Lancaster’s mouth twitched into a faint smile as he turned his head to look out at an Aston landmark.
His reflection in the glass revealed a man with sharp features and an impressive physique, exuding an innate, powerful aura of nobility and grace.
The minutes ticked by. Forty minutes had passed since their agreed-upon time, and Wren Sutton still hadn’t arrived.
Adrian Lancaster took out his phone, hesitated, then set it back down on the table, screen-side down.
He raised a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, forcing himself to wait patiently.
’Maybe she’s stuck in traffic,’ he thought. Even if she was late, he was certain Wren Sutton would come.
...
As the restaurant was about to close for the night, the waiter approached again and asked cautiously, "Sir, should we still serve your meal?"
Adrian Lancaster sat ramrod straight in his chair. "What time is it?" he asked, his voice ice-cold.
"Ten-thirty."
Xylos closed at eleven.
Adrian Lancaster’s face was dark, his brow shrouded in a frosty fury. The muscle in his jaw was clenched tight.
’Wren Sutton actually stood me up.’ He had waited for her for four whole hours.
Kevin Dawson had told him explicitly that Wren Sutton would be coming and didn’t need a driver.
’Kevin Dawson wouldn’t dare lie to me. That means Wren Sutton stood me up on purpose. She deliberately made me wait all this time.’
The more Adrian Lancaster thought about it, the angrier he became. A tempest of fury churned in his eyes. He stood up abruptly and stormed out of Xylos.
The Rolls-Royce tore through the night, filled with the same aggressive energy as its owner.
Adrian Lancaster returned to their villa.
The housekeeper rose to greet him at the door.
"Mr. Lancaster, you’re back."
"Where is she?" Adrian Lancaster’s expression was grim.
The housekeeper sensed her employer’s displeasure and answered timidly, "Mrs. Lancaster isn’t home."
She didn’t dare mention that his wife hadn’t been home for days.
Adrian Lancaster’s fury intensified.
’So this is my dear Mrs. Lancaster,’ he fumed. ’Not only does she stand me up, but she’s not even home. She’s getting more and more insolent, showing absolutely no regard for me or this family.’
"Sir, perhaps you should call Mrs. Lancaster and ask what happened."
Adrian Lancaster’s sharp gaze fell upon the housekeeper, as if flaying her alive.
"Don’t come back tomorrow."
The housekeeper froze as if struck by lightning. When she came to her senses, she hurried after Adrian Lancaster, begging for forgiveness.
"Mr. Lancaster, I’m so sorry! I shouldn’t have spoken out of turn. Please, give me another chance. I’m begging you."
Adrian Lancaster stopped midway up the staircase and looked back down at her, his entire being radiating the oppressive dominance of a man in power.
"Get out. Now."
His tone was absolute, leaving no room for argument.
The housekeeper: "..." She wanted to cry herself to death.
Adrian Lancaster stormed into the bedroom, ripped off his tie, and angrily flung it to the floor.
’No one had ever dared to stand him up. Wren Sutton was the first.’
’Fine. Just fine. He’d been far too lenient with her.’
Unable to swallow his anger, Adrian Lancaster took out his phone and dialed Wren Sutton’s number.
"We’re sorry, the number you have dialed is currently switched off."
At that moment, the man’s anger hit its absolute peak.
"Wren Sutton!"
...
「The Sutton Residence」
Wren Sutton was browsing a local job board online, but after looking for a long time, she still hadn’t found any companies or positions that appealed to her.
She closed her laptop, stood up, and stretched lazily.
’I should take my time,’ she thought. ’Some things can’t be rushed.’
’If there really isn’t a suitable job for me here, I can always consider moving to another city.’
’In a country this big, with so many cities, I refuse to believe there isn’t one job out there for me.’
Just before bed, once her phone was fully charged, Wren Sutton unplugged it. She turned it on and saw a missed call.
She guessed it was from Adrian Lancaster. She knew exactly why he had called and could even picture how furious he must have been.
Wren Sutton wasn’t the least bit nervous. She was perfectly calm.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she tapped her phone and called Adrian Lancaster back.
RING...
He picked up almost instantly.
"Wren Sutton, how dare you call me back!"
The man’s furious voice exploded in her ear.
Wren Sutton’s expression remained serene. "Why wouldn’t I?"
"You stood me up, and you think you’re in the right?"
"I had my reasons."
"You’d better be able to convince me."
Wren Sutton mimicked the nonchalant tone Adrian Lancaster had so often used with her and calmly uttered two words. "I forgot."
