Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 28: If You Like Kids, Let’s Have One
The matriarch didn’t beat around the bush; her question was direct.
Adrian stared at Wren Sutton, and before she could answer, he blurted out again, "She’s willing, too."
Wren felt Adrian’s gaze on her, undisguised in its fiery intensity and conviction.
He was confident that he was the only one for her, that even if she felt a little wronged, she still loved him deeply and would never leave.
The source of his confidence was how self-deprecatingly she loved him.
Wren lowered her gaze. A flash of sorrow crossed her eyes, and a bitter ache spread through her heart, making each breath a small, sharp pain.
’It’s true. It’s because I loved him so desperately that he has me so easily wrapped around his finger.’
Grandma frowned and shot Adrian a look. "I wasn’t asking you. No need for you to butt in."
"She’s just shy. It’s embarrassing for her to answer."
"I think *you’re* the one with the thick skin."
Adrian smiled. "Whatever you say, Grandma."
The matriarch’s expression finally softened a little. "You little rascal, you’d better treat your wife well from now on. If you let Wren suffer again, you’ll have me to answer to."
Adrian readily agreed, his attitude earnest.
Wren understood. Grandma had asked that question deliberately to give Adrian a way to save face and state his intentions for her to hear.
Whether she answered or not wouldn’t change the outcome.
She had another reason for her silence. Grandma valued her and would most likely not agree to her divorcing Adrian. Before the cooling-off period ended, she couldn’t risk letting the Lancasters know she wanted a divorce.
She would explain everything to Grandma after the dust settled.
Hearing Adrian’s promise, Grandma was satisfied enough. She turned to comfort Wren.
"You did very well today. You can’t just blindly tolerate everything in life. When you need to defend yourself, you must. I can protect you for a while, but not forever. You have to walk your own path in the future. Be brave. Don’t be afraid."
Wren nodded, moved, her eyes turning a little red. "Grandma, thank you."
Outside, a torrential downpour raged, accompanied by lightning and thunder.
Grandma looked at the time. "The weather’s bad. You’ll all stay the night."
Adrian agreed without hesitation.
Wren didn’t want to stay. It wasn’t because she disliked the old residence, but because here, she couldn’t sleep in a separate room from Adrian.
But the weather outside made driving unsafe. For safety’s sake, and with Grandma insisting, she had no choice but to stay.
After their talk, a maid came in to clear the dining table.
Wren stood up and helped Grandma to her feet.
"Grandma, let me help you back to your room to rest."
"Yes, I am tired."
Seeing the fatigue on the old woman’s face, Wren felt a pang of sadness. The matriarch had forced herself to stay alert all this time just to defend her. Wren herself felt mentally and physically exhausted, let alone a woman in her seventies.
About ten minutes later, Wren had settled Grandma in bed. She tiptoed out and gently closed the door.
She let out a heavy sigh and leaned against the wall by the door, her expression calm and unreadable. No one knew what she was thinking.
After a moment, she suddenly looked down and smiled, a glint of tears in her eyes. She dragged her weary body into another bedroom.
Just as she entered, she heard the sound of running water from the bathroom. Through the frosted glass, she could vaguely make out Adrian’s tall, blurred figure.
Wren coolly averted her gaze and walked further into the room. When she saw the large bed in the middle of the room, she frowned, a headache coming on.
’How am I supposed to sleep tonight?’
’Even a sofa would have been fine, but of course, there isn’t one.’
Frustrated, Wren walked to the window. The storm beat against the glass with a sharp RAT-A-TAT, showing no signs of stopping.
’The heavens really know how to mess with people. Of all the times for it to rain, it had to be now, and not just rain, but pour.’
Any hope of not staying the night was completely extinguished.
Without realizing it, Wren stood there for a while. She only snapped back to reality when she heard Adrian’s footsteps behind her.
"Is Grandma asleep?" Adrian asked.
"Yes, she’s asleep," Wren replied flatly.
Sensing Adrian walking toward the window, she planned to move away from him.
But as soon as she turned, before she could even take a step, she crashed right into him.
Strictly speaking, he had crashed into her.
Wren’s nose slammed into the man’s rock-hard chest, and she winced in pain.
’These aren’t muscles, this is a sheet of iron.’
"Don’t you watch where you’re going?"
Wren grumbled, rubbing her nose. Only then did she notice Adrian was bare-chested, with just a bath towel wrapped around his waist.
He carried the dampness of his shower, mixed with the fresh scent of body wash. His tall, imposing frame stood directly in front of her, blocking almost half the light from overhead.
"I should be asking you that. I was coming over, why did you run, hmm?" Adrian stared at her, his gaze possessive.
Wren hated this kind of intimate atmosphere now; she felt no interest at all.
’Playing the same old tricks he uses on Maya Marshall, and now he’s performing them for me, thinking he looks so suave.’
’Ha...’
She avoided Adrian’s scorching gaze. "I’m going to go wash up."
Adrian’s Adam’s apple bobbed.
As Wren brushed past him, he grabbed her arm, pulled her into his embrace, and whispered by her ear, "Tell me, do you want a child?"
"My body hasn’t fully recovered yet. It’s not a good time to have a child," Wren answered evasively.
"I asked the department head. She said the surgery you had doesn’t affect fertility."
Wren didn’t argue.
The surgery indeed didn’t affect fertility, but that didn’t mean she was going to have Adrian’s child in the future.
’When she had wanted to have his child, he hadn’t allowed it. From now on, *she* wouldn’t allow it.’
"We can talk about it after I’ve fully recovered."
By then, she and Adrian would already be divorced, making it even more impossible for her to bear his child.
"How much longer will that be?" Adrian’s voice was hoarse as he struggled to restrain the desire stirring within him.
Besides not having eaten Wren’s cooking in a long time, he also hadn’t touched her in a long time.
He wanted her badly.
Wren understood the implication in his words.
’This is what men are like. They marry a woman to bring her home. Whether they love her or not is unimportant, but they can’t go without sex.’
"I don’t know. I have to listen to the doctor. It’s not time for my follow-up appointment yet."
Adrian closed his eyes, savoring the soft warmth of her in his arms.
"If you like children, we can have one after you’re better."
Wren didn’t say a word, thinking to herself, ’You can just forget about that.’
...
「Half an hour later.」
Wren emerged from the shower, her pajamas buttoned up securely.
Even with a completely bare face, she was still a natural beauty, her skin plump and youthful, fair with a rosy glow.
The air she passed through was filled with a light fragrance.
Adrian was leaning against the headboard, reading a book.
He had changed into a bathrobe, the collar wide open, revealing his entire chest. You could even faintly see his abs. It wasn’t much different from when he was only wearing a towel. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Wren ignored him and circled around to the other side of the bed to sit down.
The bed was huge. She and Adrian occupied opposite sides, with a distance of at least two people between them, ensuring they wouldn’t touch.
As soon as Wren got on the bed, Adrian put down his book and turned to look at her, a hint of tenderness in his eyes.
"When did you learn to play mahjong?"
Wren said nothing.
’He’s clearly just trying to make small talk.’
"You always used to lose. I thought you didn’t know how to play."
"There’s a lot you don’t know."
Adrian disliked her cold, distant attitude. He had taken the initiative to talk to her, but she clearly had no intention of reciprocating, not even sparing him a glance.
It was a total rebuff, like having a bucket of cold water thrown on him. Adrian’s interest instantly vanished, and his expression turned cold.
Just then, his phone rang. It was a call from Maya Marshall.
Adrian put the call on speaker.
"Maya, what’s wrong?"
"There’s lightning and thunder outside, and I’m scared," Maya Marshall said, her voice soft and delicate. "Can you come keep me company?"
