Chapter 215: Chapter 215: She Thought She Hated Him

Claire Sterling hung up the phone, her hands still trembling. She took a deep breath and turned toward Wren Sutton’s room.

Pushing the door open, she saw Wren sitting in a chair in front of the strollers, having just lulled the two children to sleep.

"Wren," Claire Sterling called out softly, her voice filled with irrepressible excitement.

"Adrian is back. He’s at the hospital now."

Wren Sutton’s body visibly stiffened. She slowly turned her head, the breath caught in her throat.

She opened her mouth, but not a sound came out. Only tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.

Adrian Lancaster was back.

Wren Sutton pinched the fleshy part of her hand between her thumb and forefinger, making sure she wasn’t dreaming. The confirmation sent an even more violent and intense wave of emotions through her.

Claire Sterling walked over, also weeping with joy. "I feel the same way you do. Words can’t express it."

"Is he okay? Is he badly hurt?" Wren Sutton finally found her voice, asking through sobs.

"He’s still in a coma, but he’s out of critical danger," Claire Sterling said, gently wrapping an arm around Wren Sutton’s trembling shoulders. "Let’s go to the hospital to see him now."

The news spread quickly throughout the Lancaster family estate. The once-somber villa instantly came alive, the atmosphere even more festive than New Year’s.

The servants passed the good news to one another, their faces beaming with happy smiles.

"Thank heavens, the young master is finally back."

"This is truly wonderful news."

Soon, the entire Lancaster family, young and old, had gathered in the main hall, ready to head to the hospital together.

The matriarch, overjoyed and anxious, urged the driver to go faster.

Claire Sterling comforted her mother-in-law. "Mom, don’t worry. Safety first."

"How can I not be anxious? We’ve waited for over a year, and we finally have Adrian back. This little bit of faith is what’s kept my old body going, and thank goodness I held on," the matriarch said with emotion.

Claire Sterling blurted out, "An elder in the family is a treasure. Mom, you have to live to be a hundred."

"This daughter-in-law of mine is becoming more and more likable," the matriarch said, both pleased and touched.

In the year and more that Adrian Lancaster had been away, the person who had changed the most was Claire Sterling.

Not only had she taken the initiative to mend her relationship with Wren Sutton, becoming closer and closer, but her bond with the matriarch had also improved significantly.

She was both a proper mother-in-law and a proper daughter-in-law.

On the way to the hospital, Wren Sutton was silent the entire time.

She rested her head against the car window, her nails unconsciously digging lightly into her palms.

The streetscape outside blurred into a flowing ribbon of light, her heartbeat and the engine’s roar tangling into a chaotic rhythm.

Having not seen him for over a year, Wren Sutton couldn’t imagine what Adrian Lancaster looked like now.

Was he emaciated, frail, and severely injured, just as he was in her dreams?

The worst-case scenarios flashed uncontrollably through her mind.

’Will he be paralyzed? Will there be permanent side effects? Will he have amnesia?’

These thoughts wrapped around Wren Sutton’s mind like thorns, filling her with a dreadful anxiety.

...

In the hospital corridor, the smell of disinfectant filled the air.

When the Lancasters arrived, Theodore Lancaster was already standing guard at the door to the hospital room.

"How is Adrian? Is he awake?" the matriarch asked eagerly on behalf of everyone.

Theodore Lancaster stepped forward to support his mother. "Adrian isn’t awake yet, but don’t worry. The doctor said all his vital signs are normal. He should wake up by tomorrow."

The matriarch breathed a sigh of relief. "Can we go into the room to see him?"

"No." Theodore Lancaster shook his head. He wanted to go in too, but the hospital director had given strict instructions that the family could not visit today.

"The doctor said Adrian’s immune system is extremely weak right now. A visit from family would increase the risk of infection and hinder his recovery."

The matriarch nodded lightly, her heart heavy as she spoke. "Then we’ll wait out here. It’s already a great blessing that Adrian returned safely. We’ll cooperate with the doctors’ arrangements and not cause any trouble."

Everyone stood in front of the room, gazing through the transparent glass at Adrian Lancaster lying inside.

As the head of the family, Theodore Lancaster was used to being in control of everything, yet now he was powerless to change this cold rule.

His knuckles turned white from clenching his fists, his brow was furrowed, and his gaze was locked on his son’s pale face.

’Adrian, hang in there. The Lancaster family can’t be without you.’

Claire Sterling rushed to the glass window, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed softly in anguish.

As a mother, seeing her son lying amidst a web of medical instruments, as fragile as a piece of paper, made her feel as if her heart was being torn apart.

Adrian Lancaster was so thin he was unrecognizable, with hollow cheeks and a sickly, ashen complexion. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

Claire Sterling’s fingertips lightly touched the cold glass, as if trying to caress her son’s face through the barrier.

She recalled when Adrian was a child and had a fever; she had stayed by his bedside all night. But now, she couldn’t even get close.

’My son, you’ve suffered so much.’

Wren Sutton stepped forward to support Claire Sterling, her gaze passing through the glass to land on Adrian Lancaster.

Seeing his weak form, ravaged by illness and pain, her heart felt as if it had been viciously stabbed by something sharp.

A year ago, in the courtroom, she had fainted on the spot upon hearing the news of Adrian Lancaster’s plane crash, nearly losing the child in her womb.

Back then, Wren Sutton thought she hated this man to the core, but when his life hung in the balance, she finally understood that beneath all that hatred lay a deep concern for him.

’I thought I would never feel heartbroken over Adrian Lancaster again,’ Wren Sutton murmured to herself, her eyes reddening before she knew it.

Lucia Lancaster stood beside Wren Sutton, taking her cold hand.

"Wren, my brother will definitely pull through."

Lucia Lancaster thought of how strong her brother once was, and now here he was, lying unconscious in a hospital bed.

She could do nothing but wait, and a wave of sorrow washed over her.

When her family wasn’t looking, she quietly wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes, forcing herself to stay strong.

Time seemed to freeze.

The hands on the hospital corridor’s clock moved slowly; every minute felt like a century.

Occasionally, a nurse would enter or exit the room. Every time the door opened and closed, the Lancasters would invariably lean forward together, hoping for a better look, for any scrap of information.

...

Night fell.

Theodore Lancaster arranged for the driver to take the matriarch home to rest.

The matriarch turned, looked at her son with teary eyes, and gripped his hand tightly.

"Theodore, come back with me. You need to rest too."

The matriarch’s tone was filled with an unquestionable concern.

Claire Sterling immediately chimed in, persuading him softly, "Listen to Mom. You go home and rest. I’ll stay here and watch."

"I’ll stay and watch too," Wren Sutton, who had been silent for a long time, spoke up.

Her voice was quiet, but her tone was firm.

Wren Sutton’s gaze never left Adrian Lancaster on the hospital bed, her expression a complex mix of heartache and an indescribable stubbornness, as if she could transfer her own life force to him through her unwavering stare.

At that moment, Wren Sutton had only one thought in her mind: she had to be there to see Adrian Lancaster wake up with her own eyes. She wasn’t going anywhere; she would stay right here and be with him.
