Chapter 172: Chapter 172: Madam, President Lancaster... He...

Wren Sutton was taken aback. She hadn’t expected Spencer Sawyer to bring up Adrian Lancaster.

She had never gone out of her way to mention Adrian Lancaster to him. ’Why is he suddenly asking about him?’

"I’m not sure."

Wren’s voice was quiet, betraying a hint of indifference.

The hearing was tomorrow, and it didn’t matter whether Adrian Lancaster was present. She hadn’t fully taken to heart the promises he’d made before he left.

"You and him..." Spencer Sawyer began, then trailed off.

’Professor Morrison’s words floated through his mind. She’d said her daughter and son-in-law had an excellent relationship.’

’But back when they met Mr. Pierce at the coffee shop, he’d heard Wren herself say she wanted to divorce her husband.’

The contradiction had left Spencer Sawyer troubled for days. He’d holed up at home, not even feeling up to going into the office.

Wren asked, "Spencer, what did you want to ask?"

Spencer Sawyer hesitated for a moment, still lacking the courage to say it. He was afraid of hearing the one answer he didn’t want to hear.

"It’s nothing. Just a casual question. Don’t read too much into it."

...

They exchanged a few more pleasantries.

Spencer Sawyer glanced at his watch, not wanting to keep Wren Sutton from her rest.

"It’s getting late. You should get some rest. You’ll need your energy for tomorrow."

"Okay, Spencer. You get some rest, too."

"Good night."

"Good night."

Wren hung up, tossed her phone aside, and lay down in bed, leaving a small night light on.

Sleepiness soon washed over her. Her eyes slowly drifted shut, and she fell into a quiet sleep.

In her dream, Wren fell into a warm embrace. A man held her tightly from behind, his familiar scent enveloping her.

"Darling, you smell so good."

He then kissed her eagerly, gently tracing the shape of her lips. He was patient and delicate, treating her with the utmost care, as if she were a priceless treasure.

Their fingers were interlaced as he whispered "Darling" in her ear again and again.

"Open your eyes and look at me."

At the man’s tender prompting, Wren opened her eyes. The face that met her gaze was Adrian Lancaster’s.

She was mesmerized by his handsome features and couldn’t stop herself from reaching out to touch his face.

’How could anyone be so handsome? It was almost unfair. Every feature looked as if it had been meticulously sculpted by the heavens, perfect without a single flaw.’

"Say my name."

Meeting Adrian’s deep, gentle eyes, Wren’s heart fluttered in her chest. Blushing, she called out his name.

"Darling, let’s love each other forever. No fighting, no breaking up, okay?"

"Okay," Wren nodded shyly.

Just as Adrian lifted her into his arms, about to carry her to the bed, the scene suddenly shifted. Adrian was gone.

Wren frantically searched for any sign of him.

Everything around her was pitch black.

Suddenly, a blinding light flared up in front of her. It looked like a raging fire, growing from a flicker to a blaze.

To her horror, Wren saw Adrian collapsed amidst the flames, struggling in agony and crying desperately for help.

"Wren, save me! I don’t want to die!"

Her heart twisted in agony, and Wren wanted to run over and pull him from the fire.

But her feet felt as if they were cast in lead. She was frozen to the spot, unable to move, her panic mounting.

"Adrian, hang on! I’ll call for help! You can’t die!"

The words had barely left her mouth when a loud CRASH echoed out as something collapsed.

Adrian was crushed beneath it. The fire raged higher, and he was consumed by the inferno, burned to ash...

"Adrian!"

Wren’s eyes flew open. She shot upright in bed, drenched in a cold sweat. Her heart was pounding uncontrollably as she gasped for air.

’It was just a dream. It almost scared me to death.’

Wren struggled to calm her breathing as a terrible sense of foreboding washed over her.

After hesitating for a long while, she picked up her phone with trembling fingers and dialed Adrian’s number.

"The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later."

Her anxiety intensified. Wren then dialed Kevin Dawson’s number.

BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...

It rang for a little while before someone picked up. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"Assistant Dawson, it’s Wren. What’s the situation at the Creston branch? Is Adrian with you?"

"Mrs. Lancaster, President Lancaster... he..." Kevin Dawson’s voice was grave as he stammered, "He..."

Wren’s heart leaped into her throat. "What happened to him? Tell me!"
