Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 155: Widowhood Is an Option, Divorce Is Not
At the mention of the word "divorce," Adrian Lancaster’s expression instantly stiffened, his face turning grim. A cold light glinted in his eyes.
He had never considered divorcing Wren Sutton.
The man’s long, well-defined fingers brushed across Wren’s cheek. The gesture seemed gentle, but it was filled with a dangerous, displeased warning.
"Don’t you ever make that kind of joke again."
"I will not divorce you, and you’d better get rid of such unrealistic ideas."
"The men of the Lancaster family are only widowed, never divorced."
A firestorm of anger raged in Wren’s heart.
"You don’t even love me, so why won’t you agree to a divorce?"
Adrian’s expression was grave as he blurted out, "Marriage has never been fundamentally about love."
In other words, whether there was love in a marriage or not was unimportant.
"..."
Wren’s heart was dealt another brutal blow, leaving it raw and bleeding.
In Adrian Lancaster’s eyes, family reputation and company interests would always come before emotions.
He might not care about feelings, but she did.
After fooling herself for four years, Wren was no longer willing to live a life full of anxiety and insecurity.
Realizing he had gone a bit too far, Adrian immediately tried to explain himself to Wren.
"That’s not entirely what I meant. I do have feelings for you. If I didn’t like you at all, I would have asked for a separation long ago."
"The fact that we got married and have lived together for four years proves that you’re in my heart."
Listening to his self-righteous explanation, Wren found it both ironic and heartbreaking.
’Thankfully, the divorce papers are already signed. If I calculate the time, there are only ten days left in the cooling-off period. I just have to endure for ten more days, and I can finally end this failed marriage and leave Adrian Lancaster for good.’
"I’ve done the math. In the four years we’ve been married, you’ve spent more time with Maya Marshall than with me. During that time, you’ve given me the cold shoulder for her sake more times than I can count. Whenever I needed you most, you were never there. But if Maya needed you? One phone call from her, and you’d go to her side, no matter where she was in the world."
Adrian didn’t deny what he’d done. It was only recently that he’d begun to realize what an ass he had been, and he admitted he had wronged Wren.
That was why he was starting to change now, actively trying to make it up to her.
"I was thoughtless before. I admit I was wrong. Give me a chance, okay?"
Wren was unmoved.
"Can you promise that you’ll never see Maya Marshall again, starting now? That even if she died, you wouldn’t go to her."
"If you can do that, I’ll forgive you for your past mistakes."
Adrian looked at her, his dark eyes unreadable. He did not agree.
"Mrs. Lancaster, show some decency. Maya Marshall is in a pitiful state as it is. Do you really wish she were dead? What good would her death do you?"
Wren didn’t feel she was in the wrong. She was just giving an example; she hadn’t actually meant to curse Maya Marshall to death.
After a long silence, Adrian finally spoke, offering Wren an out.
"Alright, let’s not talk about her. This is a problem between us, and we’ll solve it ourselves without involving anyone else."
The rain continued to fall. He glanced at the time—four in the morning. It would be a lie to say he wasn’t tired.
He carried Wren to the bed. "It’s late. Let’s sleep. I won’t bother you; I’ll sleep on the sofa."
A wave of drowsiness hit Wren. Not caring where Adrian slept, she simply turned over and went to sleep.
Completely ignored, Adrian let out a self-deprecating chuckle. "Adrian Lancaster, so this is what it’s come to."
「...」
The rain fell for most of the night, stopping at dawn.
The fresh scent of damp earth filled the air.
Wren opened her eyes and turned to see Adrian sleeping on the sofa. His eyes were shut tight, and he was still fast asleep.
Wren had expected it to be like all the other times, where she would wake up to find Adrian already gone. She hadn’t thought he would still be here today.
She got out of bed, walked over, and called his name.
Adrian remained still, with no reaction.
"Adrian? Adrian..." Wren frowned and called out a few more times.
He was still motionless.
It was then that Wren noticed his complexion didn’t look right. She reached out and touched his forehead; it was burning hot to the touch.
Adrian had a fever.
