Chapter 117: Chapter 117: The Doctor Says Amputation May Be Necessary

The hospital.

After several hours of frantic effort from the doctors, Maya Marshall was out of mortal danger. However, she had multiple comminuted fractures throughout her body, and there was a risk of amputation.

One moment, Mrs. Marshall was pressing her hands together in prayer, thanking the heavens. The next, she felt as if the sky had fallen, crushing the air from her lungs.

’Amputation! Doesn’t that mean my daughter will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair?’

Mrs. Marshall couldn’t accept it. This was worse than death to her. She cried her heart out, so overcome with emotion that she nearly fainted.

The moment Adrian Lancaster stepped out of the elevator, he heard Mrs. Marshall’s grief-stricken cries. His chest tightened abruptly, as if seized by an invisible iron grip.

’Could it be...’

He quickened his pace, preparing himself for the worst.

"Maya... Is she..."

Seeing Adrian Lancaster, Mrs. Marshall cried even harder.

"Adrian, you’re finally here! You have to get justice for Maya. Wren Sutton was the one who pushed her off the rock garden! My poor, ill-fated daughter... She’s so pitiful. She bled so much when she fell. Imagine how much pain she must have been in!"

Adrian Lancaster looked at Maya Marshall, who lay unconscious and pale on the hospital bed. His heart was in his throat.

"So, what’s her condition now?"

Mrs. Marshall wiped away her tears, composed herself for a moment, and let out a heavy sigh.

"She just got out of surgery. The anesthesia hasn’t worn off yet. The operation was a success, and her life is saved, but..."

"But what?" Adrian Lancaster’s brow furrowed. "Tell me," he urged anxiously.

Mrs. Marshall said, her voice filled with pain, "The doctor said... she might need an amputation."

...

Hearing this, Adrian Lancaster’s heart was in turmoil. His expression grew grim as he tried, and failed, to imagine what Maya Marshall would be like after an amputation.

’She loves to dance so much. How could she ever dance again with an amputated limb?’

’Confined to a wheelchair, unable to care for herself... Living would be more painful than death. How could she ever adapt?’

Mrs. Marshall’s tone shifted. "Things have come to this, so I’m not holding back anymore. I’m telling you right now, I don’t care who Wren Sutton is to you, I’m pressing charges. Even if it costs me everything, I’ll make sure she faces the full extent of the law."

Adrian Lancaster pulled himself from his thoughts. "The case is still under investigation. Until the court convenes and a verdict is reached, Wren Sutton is only a suspect."

"She’s not a suspect, she’s a killer!"

Adrian Lancaster raised a hand, signaling for Mrs. Marshall to calm down. "I will see that this is resolved for the Marshall Family."

An unknown amount of time passed before the anesthesia began to wear off. Maya Marshall was jolted awake by the pain, struggling to open her eyes.

Through her blurry vision, she thought she saw Adrian Lancaster. She tried to call out to him, but her throat was too dry to make a sound, and tears of frustration streamed down her face.

Just then, Adrian Lancaster happened to look up and saw that Maya Marshall was awake.

He immediately leaned closer, a wave of conflicting emotions washing over him. "You’re finally awake."

Maya Marshall wept silently. Every movement sent a fresh wave of agony through her; her body felt like it was about to fall apart.

Adrian Lancaster gently wiped away her tears. "The surgery was a success. Don’t cry."

He decided not to mention the amputation for now, worried that Maya Marshall wouldn’t be able to handle it. He’d wait until tomorrow to bring it up.

He then helped Maya Marshall drink some water.

The water soothed her throat, and Maya Marshall was finally able to speak, though her tone was incredibly weak and her voice was quiet.

"It was Wren Sutton who pushed me from the top of the rock garden. It was because... because..."

The accusation was serious. Adrian Lancaster listened intently, desperate to know the reason.

"Because of what? Don’t rush, take your time." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Maya Marshall looked at Adrian Lancaster and thought, ’This is my last chance. I have to seize it. Otherwise, all these injuries I’ve suffered will be for nothing.’

"Wren Sutton found out that I sent you that photo. I’m blunt, so I just asked her who the man in it was. She flew into a rage, warned me, and slapped me. But I guess that wasn’t enough for her, so she pushed me."
