Secretly Married for 4 Years, He Regrets to Tears After the Divorce-Chapter 104: A Bold Decision
Wren Sutton hung up the phone and leaned back on the sofa, staring blankly at the television with an unreadable expression.
’Looks like I have to go to this lunch after all. I have no idea what Adrian Lancaster is planning.’
’She didn’t believe Adrian Lancaster would ask her to lunch for no reason. He must want something from her.’
’Then again, what could be so important that it couldn’t be said over the phone? Why did they have to meet for a meal to talk about it?’
Wren Sutton couldn’t figure it out. Shaking off her thoughts, she lazily got up and went to her walk-in closet.
She casually selected a softly-colored, knee-length dress that was both elegant and modest.
She paired it with a casual sun hat that both framed her face nicely and made her look younger.
Because of her pregnancy, she skipped makeup. After her basic skincare routine, she just put on some sunscreen and a bit of lipstick before heading out.
With the navigation set for Xylos, Wren Sutton drove at a steady speed while music played in the car.
She passed two intersections. Everything was normal, and traffic was light.
As she was about to turn right at the third intersection, she caught sight of a little girl standing by the side of the road. There was no adult with her.
The girl looked to be about three or four years old. She was clutching a rag doll, and her delicately featured face was streaked with tears. Her little shoulders trembled, a truly heart-wrenching sight.
As an expectant mother herself, Wren Sutton felt a wave of compassion far stronger than most would. She pulled over to the side of the road without a second thought.
She got out of the car and knelt in front of the little girl. Stroking her head, she asked gently, "Sweetie, why are you standing here all by yourself? Where are your mommy and daddy?"
The little girl shook her head, tears rolling down her cheeks like pearls from a broken string. She pressed her lips together, saying nothing, her eyes red and swollen.
Wren Sutton’s heart ached even more. She used a tissue to gently wipe away the girl’s tears.
"How about I take you home to find your mommy and daddy, okay?"
The little girl just shook her head, remaining silent. Her gaze was timid, but she didn’t shy away from Wren Sutton, her big, tear-filled eyes fixed on her. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
’This lady is so pretty,’ the girl thought. ’She smells so nice, like vanilla ice cream.’
Wren’s heart melted. She hugged the little girl, unable to bear the thought of leaving her there all alone.
"Why don’t you want to go home? You’re so little, and it’s dangerous to be out here by yourself. Your mommy and daddy will be so worried if they can’t find you."
"Tell me where you live, or tell me your mommy and daddy’s phone number. I can call them to come get you."
The little girl suddenly burst into tears, letting out a loud "WAAAH!" as if she had suffered some terrible injustice.
Wren Sutton quickly tried to soothe her, doing everything she could to calm her down. She happened to have a piece of chocolate in her pocket, which she pulled out.
"Don’t cry, don’t cry. Here, I’ll give you this chocolate. It’s really yummy, why don’t you try it?"
Sure enough, the little girl immediately stopped crying.
"Can you open the wrapper by yourself?" Wren asked.
The little girl nodded.
Wren handed her the chocolate.
With an adorable little motion, the girl tore open the wrapper and popped the chocolate into her mouth.
"Is it sweet?"
The little girl smiled happily, revealing two cute little dimples.
Wren smiled too. The street was busy, so she pointed to her car.
"How about I carry you over to my car so you can sit down for a little while?"
The little girl just nodded, still not willing to speak.
Wren settled the little girl into the back seat, buckled her in, and gently closed the door.
Then, standing by the side of the road, she took out her phone and dialed 911.
’Although Wren’s heart went out to the little girl, she knew she couldn’t just take her away. The nature of the situation would change entirely if she did.’
She briefly explained the situation over the phone, and officers from the local precinct arrived shortly after.
They spoke for a bit more at the scene.
In a situation like this, the police would have to take the girl back to the station. From there, they would investigate further to find her parents and have them pick her up.
That was what Wren had expected.
But the little girl wouldn’t cooperate. The moment she saw the officers, she started crying, shaking her head and refusing to go with them.
Watching from the side, Wren couldn’t bear it and thought of a possible solution.
"How about this," she suggested. "I can follow your car and help bring her to the station."
The officer agreed. "That would work. We appreciate your help."
"It’s no trouble at all. It’s for the child’s sake."
「Ten minutes later.」
Wren’s car followed the police cruiser through the gates of the local precinct and parked in a designated spot.
She then lifted the little girl out of the car, keeping her in her arms as she followed an officer into an office.
After giving her statement, Wren prepared to leave.
The little girl, still in her arms, clutched tightly to her collar and refused to let go. She shook her head at Wren, tears welling in her eyes, silently begging her not to leave.
"Sweetie, don’t be afraid," Wren soothed patiently. "Everyone here is very nice. They’ll protect you. You’re very safe here."
The little girl looked up with tear-filled eyes, looking utterly pitiful.
"Sweetie, Aunt Sutton has been holding you for a long time. Let’s give her a rest, okay? How about you let Aunt Foster hold you? Aunt Foster can tell you a story." A policewoman came over to coax the girl, holding out toys and snacks.
They thought the girl might give in, but she refused to let go, clinging to Wren tightly. She buried her small head in Wren’s shoulder, sobbing until she could barely breathe.
The officers on scene exchanged helpless glances. They had tried every trick they could think of, but nothing worked.
The little girl didn’t trust anyone but Wren, and she was terrified of being left at the police station.
The situation was getting tricky.
The little girl still refused to speak a single word, so the officers couldn’t get any information about her parents. Their only option was to search through other means, which was like looking for a needle in a haystack. It was unlikely they’d get results anytime soon.
But it wasn’t right to ask Wren to sit in the station office holding the girl indefinitely. She had no obligation to do so.
The minutes ticked by.
Everyone was at their wit’s end.
After some deep thought, Wren made a bold decision.
"Could I take her home with me for a few days?"
"She’s so distraught right now, and she only seems to trust me. After thinking it over, it seems like the best solution."
"Once you find her family and get in touch with them, I’ll bring her back."
Hearing Wren say she would take her home, the little girl’s crying slowly subsided, and she nodded emphatically.
Wren felt the little girl’s complete trust and reliance on her. For some reason, it made her want to cry, and a bittersweet pang went through her heart.
’Such an adorable child... Where on earth are her parents? Why would they just leave her alone on the street?’
After careful consideration and discussion, the officer agreed to Wren’s proposal. Before she left, he had her sign a document to prevent any future misunderstandings.
Wren signed the form as requested and left, still carrying the little girl.
Just as she got into the car, her phone rang.
Recognizing the number, Wren answered the call.
"Why aren’t you here yet?" Adrian Lancaster had been waiting at Xylos for nearly two hours, and he was getting impatient.
Wren explained, "Something came up unexpectedly. I forgot to let you know, I’m sorry."
"What was it?" Adrian pressed.
Wren had no intention of telling him and dodged the question. "You should just eat. Don’t wait for me."
Adrian was furious. He’d been stood up again.
No one but Wren Sutton would ever dare to treat him this way.
"Where exactly are you right now?"
"Aston."
With that, Wren hung up and drove away from the precinct.
