Chapter 109: Chapter 108: Broken Friendship, Broken Contract

Eleanore was tired of using this excuse everywhere possible. Although true, it always sounded like a trashy and sloppy excuse to the other person. Even though she didn’t want to use it, she had no other choice but to try and explain her condition to her friend, who’s friendship and love she was failing to feel.

She held her own arm by her other hand, as her eyes fell on the ground, in guilt. "I am the problem." She repeats. "The thing is my memories are completely distorted, since the last few months. Somehow, I have forgotten a lot of things or maybe they just got lost. I have tried remember those, believe me." Her gaze turns back to Flora, whose expression showed clearly that she didn’t believe any of that crap.

"What does any of that have to do with this?" She asked, unable to understand what Eleanore was getting at.

"It has. I can’t remember our friendship, I can feel nothing because along with those memories, I have also lost those feelings." She explains.

Flora went silent, her eyes widened in disbelief. She absolutely could not believe that after everything this woman, who was once her friend did. In return for explanation, all she had to say is that she can’t feel her friendship? Her love? Her worry? Her goodwill?

"You are unbelievable. I can’t believe, I ever had any kind of friendship with you." Flora feels disgusted. She walks forward to Eleanore. "You know what? Keep this excuse with yourself. For I do not want to see your face ever again." She pushes Eleanore aside to clear her way. "Our friendship ends here. Have fun with that bitch Stella."

Without any more words, Flora leaves the fountain area and traces her way back to the ballroom; she reaches the entrance but stops there. She never liked balls and stupid banquets even when she was younger, but her mother used to force her to get her face known in the social world.

On her first debutante ball, she stood in a corner leaning on the royal walls of the royal palace. She had picked up a cake for herself and was munching on it, when it was announced that the duke of Sinclair, who was only about three years older than her, at that time, was entering with his sister.

Eleanore’s blond hair quickly caught her attention. Moreover, she was not the only one who had seen that sun-like hair fluttering in the air. All the other nobles of various ages had approached her. She looked scared and weary. The attention that was showered on her made her feel nervous and afraid. This little girl with some mesmerizing features, looked just as scared and annoyed as herself.

So, she left her comfort zone and rushed to that little girl. She grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the crowd. They walked for a long time away from those people to the beautiful mermaid fountain, with shining white paint.

That was their first meeting spot. That place stood witness of the beginning of their friendship.

After that day there was no stopping. They met almost every week and spent a lot of time together. Hours would flit by without them noticing it and when it came time to walk on separate paths, they would cry their eyes out. Promising each other to meet again next week.

To Flora, Eleanore was her sun. She believed if Eleanore stood beside her, she could fight the whole world alone. However, with such deep friendship came insecurities. Eleanore had many friends, relatives and siblings but Flora only had her. She hated the fact that Eleanore’s attention kept splitting between her and the others.

Thus, in their teenage era, they signed a contract. It said that no matter what happens in the future they would remain friends forever. Eleanore would always stay by her side no matter how badly or nicely their character changes in the future. Flora would also do the same.

Following that contract, Flora never left her side. Even when she clearly knew, bullying people over her obsessive love for Caelestis was not right, she didn’t stop her. Instead, she stood by her and bullied every woman, until they completely gave up on the grand duke.

In reality, Flora hated to see herself in that dark light. She felt a lump in her throat, every time she heard the cries of those tortured women. But this guilt would disappear when her eyes fell on her sun, Eleanore and she would go ahead and do it all over again.

One day, things changed. Eleanore changed. She gave up on that love she harboured for years and let Stella have the love she deserved. Flora was truly happy for her friend, until it all went downhill. She became a better friend of Stella than her.

Flora thought she might have probably forgotten about the contract. Thus, she bought it along, today. She was going to show that childish paper that was written by her and had a sloppy sign that none of them used anymore.

She felt strange. There was a high possibility that Eleanore didn’t even remember that contract and that maybe she might just laugh it off, thinking it was dumb. So, she couldn’t bring it up.

The old paper in her hand that was wearing off, made her realise that this was the end. Along with this paper, their friendship was also shattering. Instead of waiting for it to completely fall apart and leave her with a severe wound. She preferred severing it right away, by her own hand. Maybe that would hurt her heart less?

Flora grabbed the sides of the paper and tore it apart into many pieces. She wanted those pieces to be so small, that it would become unreadable and unrecognisable for any person who picks it up. So that no one can mend it back to its original form. She didn’t want to live in hopes that things would get back to normal.

When she couldn’t tear them into any more small pieces, she started pulling them apart and crumbling them and then scattering them in the air. The pieces flew and fell in places no one could retrieve them from.

She was too tired after that ballroom; her face was no longer presentable for the founding day celebration. So, instead of entering the ballroom again, she left the royal palace with a heavy heart.
