Ruling the Historical Romance Novel as the Female Supporting Character-Chapter 437: The Wang Family is a Bunch of Clueless Allies
Wang Fengsong spent the entire night being interrogated in the police station’s questioning room. After catching just over an hour of sleep, she was dragged back in for more questioning. It wasn’t until just after noon the next day that she was finally released.
She took the bus back to the compound. Along the way, she was met with a barrage of scornful, mocking, and curious glances from the onlookers. Although Wang Fengsong felt utterly drained from the interrogation, the attention only made her quicken her pace.
Despite her clear intent to avoid any interaction, a few persistent onlookers stopped her.
"Fengsong, what’s been going on with your family? You’ve been making quite a stir lately."
"Yeah, it sounds serious. The police came last night, right?"
Wang Fengsong pressed her lips tightly together, unwilling to utter a word. Yet, the crowd kept pressing in on her, their inquiries unrelenting.
"Sorry, I’m really tired. Can we talk later?" she replied weakly.
But they continued to crowd around her.
"Fengsong, we’ve been neighbors with the Mu family for decades. If you need help, just let us know. We’re always here for you."
"Exactly! Neighbors are better than distant relatives. Just tell us what you need!"
Wang Fengsong was nearly at her breaking point. However, she knew this wasn’t the right time to lose her temper. She gritted her teeth and quickened her pace back home.
The truth was, these people weren’t clueless; they all knew what was happening. They despised the Mu family for their behavior. That’s why they were here, intentionally trying to provoke Wang Fengsong.
When her son, Mu Yanming, had been accepted to Qing University, they had all been envious, praising her and looking on with admiration. They didn’t know then that his academic success was dubious. Now, they felt like fools.
Wang Fengsong didn’t care what they thought. She hurried through the door of the Mu family compound and slammed it shut behind her, shutting out the noise.
Leaning against the door, she let out a long sigh of relief. However, upon entering the living room, she was met with the stern faces of Wang’s two sons and her sister-in-law.
"You’re back. Where’s your sister-in-law?" the eldest son of the Wang family demanded, his tone dark.
Wang Fengsong felt drained as she replied, "The police are still questioning her. They went to find the student who helped Yanming cheat on his exam, but he’s been missing since last year. As the middleman, she has to stay at the police station."
Fear crept into her voice, as she still couldn’t comprehend how things had escalated so quickly. But the Wang family immediately exploded in denial.
"Impossible! Our family wouldn’t have the guts to do anything that reckless!" the eldest son insisted.
The Mu family members exchanged glances, bewildered. Even Wang Fengsong was taken aback. "Brother, why would you say that? The police only said he’s missing; they didn’t claim he was dead! Why assume the worst?"
"Isn’t this your usual style? Perhaps you thought if he helped your son, he might use this to blackmail you later, so you had to silence him?" The eldest son tried to clarify himself, feeling cornered.
But Wang Fengsong felt a wave of relief wash over her. "I’m not that foolish! It was just a proxy exam. He can still take the National College Entrance Examination next year. Why would I fear blackmail from him? He wouldn’t throw away his future!"
Her reasoning somewhat calmed the Wang family, as long as she wasn’t acting recklessly. If she did, they would be implicated too.
"I think he simply took the money and ran. He probably didn’t want to share it with his family. It’s not impossible for him to rent a place and create a fake ID," Wang Fengsong continued, attempting to divert the topic away from anything that could implicate them.
However, this line of thinking did little to alleviate the Wang family’s suspicions.
"Wait, what did you just say? What do you mean by ’your usual style’?" Mu Xiaowei interjected coldly.
Wang Fengsong’s heart sank. She realized this man, who had long viewed her with disdain, was now on the offensive, eager to expose her weaknesses. He wanted everyone to see her as the villain, thus giving him justification to end their marriage.
What had she done wrong over these twenty years? Why couldn’t she win his heart? She was attractive and skilled in both social and domestic settings. She had even given birth to a son for the Mu family. How could Mu Xiaowei still be dissatisfied?
Wang Fengsong’s heart filled with resentment, but now wasn’t the time for that. She glanced at the Wang family, subtly signaling them not to say anything that could worsen the situation.
But Mu Xiaowei was no fool; he noticed her small gestures.
"Should we all just leave to give you and the Wang family a chance to coordinate your testimonies?" he sneered.
Wang Fengsong froze, embarrassment flooding her face. In the past, while Mu Xiaowei had never shown her much respect, he had never been this extreme before. Now, it was as if he wanted to trample her into the ground.
The Wang family sensed the shift in the atmosphere. They exchanged looks between Wang Fengsong and Mu Xiaowei, realizing the tension was thick.
Finally, the eldest son of the Wang family spoke up. "Last night, Fengsong came back and suggested we take drastic measures against that girl from the Su family. She believed that threatening her life would compel her man to negotiate with the authorities to lighten the consequences for the proxy exam. But we refused! It’s just a proxy exam; there’s no need to resort to murder!"
"Wang Jiancheng!" Wang Fengsong’s eyes widened in fury as she shouted at the eldest son. She couldn’t believe the Wang family not only lacked courage but also lacked intelligence. How could they share such sensitive information with Mu Xiaowei? This would only deepen the rift between her and Mu Xiaowei, doing nothing to benefit the Wang family.
