Chapter 408: Never Overestimate Human Nature

"He’s a good kid, and the Yu family is still decent," Grandma Zhou said softly.

The two of them, being elderly, would often return from work exhausted, unable to do much around the farm. Tianqin had helped them out in many ways. Besides, the Yu family had suffered so much. His daughter-in-law had been ruined by those heartless people, and his wife had been angered to death. For all these years, it had just been father and son relying on each other to survive.

It seemed that if they could hold on a little longer, they might get out of here. Tianqin had two children who had been given away, and getting out would give them some hope. But now, with things as they were, he might not even live long enough to see his children one last time.

"Alright, after we finish eating, and once it’s a bit darker, we’ll go," Su Yijia decisively concluded.

"Jiajia, thank you so much! Without you, we wouldn’t know what to do!" Grandma Zhou said gratefully, placing a piece of fish in Su Yijia’s bowl. Her fondness for this young woman growing stronger.

"Grandma, there’s no need to thank me. Even without me, Kaize would’ve handled this," Su Yijia replied, not thinking that treating someone was such a troublesome matter.

"Him? This child rarely concerns himself with things like this," Grandma Zhou shook her head.

In truth, this wasn’t the first time their hearts had softened, but Ze had always refused to get involved in such matters before.

Grandpa Xia looked over and explained, "Ze didn’t interfere because he couldn’t. Back then, things were tightly controlled, and even coming here to see us was a big risk. If he had gotten involved in other people’s matters, the whole family could’ve been in danger."

"I understand, I was just speaking out of sentiment," Grandma Zhou quickly added, understanding the situation back then.

At this point, Su Yijia stepped in to ease the mood, "Grandma, eat some meat." She placed a piece of meat into Grandma Zhou’s bowl, bringing smiles to the table.

They continued their meal in high spirits, discussing what Su Yijia planned to do in the future and asking about Qin Kaize’s situation in the team, as well as his plans after finishing school. When they heard about the awards Su Yijia had earned for her medicinal formulas, and how most of the credit had gone to Qin Kaize, they felt even more satisfied with her.

After the meal, Su Yijia applied some ointment to the cracks on Grandpa Xia and Grandma Zhou’s hands.

"Grandpa, Grandma, after applying the ointment, you shouldn’t touch water for about half an hour, or it’ll wash off. If you can manage it, apply it two to three times a day. If not, at least once before bed will do. Don’t worry about running out—I’ll make more once I leave and buy the herbs. There will definitely be enough."

"This ointment is amazing, Jiajia. It feels warm on my hands, and it doesn’t itch anymore!" Grandma Zhou exclaimed in surprise, looking at her hands.

The worst part about frostbite was not just the cracks but the unbearable itching. Once it started warming up, the itching would get worse, leading to constant scratching that opened up wounds again, making them both painful and itchy. But now, all that discomfort had disappeared.

Seeing the positive effect, Su Yijia smiled, "I’m glad it works. Now, let’s go check on Yu Tianqin."

"Alright, at this hour, everyone’s probably inside their houses, so no one should be outside," Grandpa Xia said, getting up.

In truth, Su Yijia had already noticed that no one was outside, which is why she had suggested going now.

The four of them headed to the Yu family’s house. Inside, all they could hear was Yu Tianqin’s labored breathing, which sounded like a broken bellows. Grandpa Yu’s own breathing was faint, hidden beneath the louder sounds of his son’s struggle, leaving him looking lifeless.

Hearing them come in, Grandpa Yu weakly lifted his head. "You’re here to return the bowls? Why have you all come?" he asked feebly.

Grandpa Xia gestured toward Su Yijia. "Old Yu, this young lady is quite skilled in medicine. How about letting her take a look at Tianqin?"

The moment Grandpa Yu heard this, his eyes lit up, but then they quickly dimmed again.

"It’s no use. Tianqin was injured by a wild boar. Even if we know what medicine to use, we can’t get our hands on it," he said, shaking his head in defeat.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want his son to be treated; he was simply too beaten down by life. Every time they thought there was hope, they were struck down again. He no longer dared to hope for anything.

"Let me take a look first. If there’s a way, we’ll bring the medicine in tomorrow," Su Yijia gently persuaded.

Hearing her words, Grandpa Yu looked up again. When he saw her delicate and beautiful face, he immediately started shaking his head. "You shouldn’t be here! This place isn’t safe for you! Leave! Leave now!" he exclaimed, standing up in alarm. He cast a disapproving glance at Grandpa Xia. "You should know better than to bring young people here! What were you thinking?"

He was so agitated that he nearly shouted, but then struggled to find the right words.

Su Yijia smiled softly and reassured him, "Grandpa Yu, don’t worry. I know you’re thinking about Qi Feiping. We already saw him when we came in, and he didn’t do anything. Right now, all he cares about is making money. He knows the farm is nearing its end, so he’s just trying to collect enough to secure a comfortable future." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

If Grandpa Yu hadn’t been so worried about her earlier, she wouldn’t have bothered explaining all this.

But hearing her response made his face grow even more serious. "Nonsense! What kind of person do you think he is? He may be cautious today, but what about later? What if tomorrow or next time he sees you again? Who can guarantee he won’t do something reckless?"

His questions made Qin Kaize’s face darken. "After this time, I won’t bring her back here. If anything needs to be done, I’ll come myself."

He had been too naive. Though most people weigh risks and rewards, some are so consumed by greed that they’re willing to take desperate actions, even if it leads to their downfall. If Qi Feiping made such a choice, things could go horribly wrong.

Su Yijia pressed her lips together, exchanging a glance with Qin Kaize, and stopped insisting. They had come together this time to see if they could take Yu Tianqin out, but now it seemed that wasn’t possible. And clearly, Qin Kaize hadn’t known about Qi Feiping’s darker tendencies beforehand—otherwise, he never would’ve let her take such a risk.

"I’ll examine him first. If he needs medicine, Kaize can bring it tomorrow," Su Yijia said calmly.

Grandpa Yu took a deep breath and no longer objected.

"Thank you for your help," he said quietly.
