Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 425: The Factory
An hour later, the food processing factory came into view.
It was massive with high walls surrounding it, though parts had collapsed.
The large metal gates hung crookedly, half-open.
Faded letters still clung to the sign above:
"Golden Harvest Food Processing Plant."
Lu Tao, who had insisted on joining despite earlier exhaustion, whistled softly.
"If this place hasn’t been raided before, then we have hit the jackpot."
At this moment, Leng Pan raised her hand and motioned for them to stop.
The entire team halted instantly.
She looked around as if assessing the place.
The factory was quiet. In fact, a little too quiet.
It didn’t scream danger, but it was very obvious that something was wrong.
How could such a huge place not be crawling with zombies?
This was a large factory and on the night the meteorites fell, many people should have been working.
Even if zombies moved from place to place in search of food, the factory shouldn’t have been abandoned completely.
"Something’s wrong," Leng Pan said quietly.
The others tensed immediately and Lu Hao nodded his head.
He was more sensitive than anyone else there.
"There is something inside." He said with furrowed brows.
"How many?" Lu Zhen asked, his gaze still focused on the factory.
"One."
"Only one."
Two people answered at the same time.
It was Lu Zhen’s two younger brothers, Lu Hao and Lu Tao.
It seemed that Lu Tao had also used his X-ray vision to look into the factory and found the threat.
However, hearing their answer, Leng Pan wasn’t happy, instead, she became even more cautious.
If only one zombie was here, then that meant it was so strong that it had eliminated all the other zombies.
That meant that it had some kind of ability that other zombies were unable to escape or fight back.
Without a word, Leng Pan motioned for the team to split into two.
One of the group entered the factory cautiously while the other remained outside as backup.
It was also to guard the factory so that other survivors don’t budge in and catch them off guard while they were fighting whatever was inside.
As Lu Zhen led the team towards the direction Lu Tao had pointed out, the air changed.
The smell of rotten flesh filled the air.
However, this was not the usual smell of decay. Instead, it was much thicker than anything they had encountered before.
Leng wondered what kind of zombie it was that could smell worse than rotten fish.
Inside, broken conveyor belts and overturned machines filled the space.
Boxes of processed food lay scattered everywhere, some spoiled, others still intact.
"Split up and collect whatever you see in sight. Don’t leave anything behind. We will sort everything back in the base."
Even though some of the processed food seemed to be spoiled, some people would still kill for them.
If they could take them back and find a way to trade them with other things such as crystal cores, then it wouldn’t go to waste.
Everyone moved quickly but cautiously.
The silence inside the factory was suffocating.
Even footsteps sounded too loud.
Even though she was also busy putting supplies in the space bangle, Leng Pan didn’t let her guard down.
The further they moved in the factory, the more cautious she became.
Even so, they were still ambushed.
A faint sound echoed.
Drip... drip... drip...
Leng Pan froze.
Her eyes snapped toward the source.
A dark corridor deeper inside the factory.
"Everyone back," she said immediately.
But it was already too late.
A figure stepped out of the shadows slowly.
In fact, it wasn’t slow, but it gave the illusion that it was moving slowly.
Before the team could react, it moved towards them.
Too fast to react.
WHOOSH!
It appeared in front of one of the fighters in an instant.
"WATCH OUT!"
The man barely raised his weapon before...
SLASH!
A claw tore through his shoulder, sending him crashing into a machine.
Leng Pan reacted instantly and gave the order, "Attack."
At the same time, countless water blades shot towards the zombie at astonishing speed.
Lu Zhen’s speed wasn’t any slower as a huge wall of flames blasted the zombie squarely on the chest, sending it flying and crashing into a wall.
For a second it didn’t move. Leng Pan wondered if it had died so easily, but then it moved and slowly stood up again.
One of its arms had been severed by Leng Pan’s water blade and was still twitching on the ground.
Leng Pan wondered if it was so easy to deal with.
If so, they could just cut it into pieces with the next attack.
However, before she could act, everyone watched in horror as a new arm began growing from the stump.
It grew rapidly and in less than a minute, the zombie had a new complete arm.
"What the hell..." Ouyang Jin whispered.
Leng Pan’s eyes narrowed as she watched all this.
She thought for a moment and realized that this wasn’t any normal zombie. In fact, it wasn’t even a mutated zombie but an evolving one.
The creature’s body was distorted, muscles bulging unnaturally.
Its skin was darkened, almost armored.
However, the stench on its body was worse than any zombie she had ever come across.
The zombie focused its empty eyes before its lips spread almost to its ears.
It formed a grotesque broken expression.
Then, it moved again and disappeared.
"Move closer." Leng Pan ordered. "Don’t let it isolate anyone." She added.
The team moved immediately, all the members standing back to back covering each other.
The next attack came from above.
CRASH!
The creature dropped from the ceiling, targeting another fighter.
However, Sonny, who was standing next to that fighter, reacted quickly.
His sword slashed upward and met the zombie’s claw head-on.
CLANG!
Sparks flew as the creature’s claws collided with metal.
"Wow! This thing is fast." Sonny muttered as he was pushed three steps backwards from the impact.
Lu Zhen reacted quickly as well and hurled a ball of flames at the zombie.
However, it twisted in midair and dodged the flames causing them to hit the ceiling and almost burned a hole through it.
