Chapter 386: Chapter 386: The Creepy Third Floor (2)

Leng Pan raised an eyebrow before turning to Lu Zhen.

"Someone had been cleaning." She finally replied to his earlier question.

"Thorough." She added.

Gasps of shock rang throughout the reception room from the other teammates once they heard Leng Pan’s judgement.

They didn’t doubt her.

"That’s impossible. Who would clean such a big place so thoroughly in the apocalypse?" Someone asked in confusion.

"It might be impossible for ordinary people, but whoever has been doing this is certainly not ordinary." Leng Pan replied.

Lu Tao frowned since he didn’t notice anything strange when he was surveying the place earlier.

He tried to search again, but this time he was met with some kind of resistance, or interference.

"I don’t see any signs of life here." He whispered close to Lu Zhen and Leng Pan.

"But something is deliberately interfering with my vision.

It’s not as clear as usual. It’s blurry." Lu Tao continued after a slight hesitation.

Lu Zhen grabbed Leng Pan’s hand once more and his grip tightened.

"So, we are either dealing with something smarter than zombies, or a zombie smart enough to hide, or something that doesn’t want to be found." He said solemnly.

Leng Pan nodded in agreement.

But that was the toughest situation for them. They didn’t know whether it was a zombie that was too smart or something that didn’t want interference.

If it was a zombie and they left it to grow, it could become a worldwide threat in the future if they didn’t take it out now.

Leng Pan looked towards the lounge and decided to take the cautious route. They will find out what it is eventually, but for now, the sun was about to rise and they needed to rest.

She pointed at the lounge and said to everyone, "Let’s rest in there for now. But don’t lower your guard no matter what."

No one argued as they walked to the lounge cautiously.

Leng Pan pushed the door open first, and just like the corridor, it was spick and span. Not a speck of dust, not a seat out of place.

The hinges didn’t creak and the door didn’t groan when opened. Unlike a door that hadn’t been cared for for a long time.

It opened silently as if it had been oiled recently.

She didn’t care much about the person who did the cleaning and all the other stuff for now because if they delayed anymore, the heat would catch up to them.

The others followed behind and the last one to enter closed the door behind them and locked it with a dead bolt.

Leng Pan walked inside the lounge and looked around the room.

The sofas were arranged neatly, the tables wiped clean. Even the water dispenser placed in the corner of the room looked like it was still functional.

Someone at the back swallowed hard.

"Commander Leng, this place looks as if someone’s been living in it." They said quietly. As if afraid that the owner would hear them.

Leng Pan didn’t deny that. The place indeed looked similar to someone’s living room.

She walked to the center of the room and turned around in a circle looking at every corner, but saw nothing.

She extended her water ability outward in fine, invisible threads, probing every spot in that room.

But she didn’t find anything. No ambush and no immediate danger.

However, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone or something was watching her.

"Let’s stay here. If you want to sleep, sleep. We haven’t slept in a long time and in case of an intense battle later, we need to be recharged.

We will rotate watches so that all of us can rest." Leng Pan said, completely ignoring whoever was watching in the dark.

If they had a problem with them, they could come out in the open and fight, instead of acting like a creep or a coward.

Lu Zhen’s eyes remained on the closed door for a long time.

Leng Pan walked over to him and asked softly, "You feel it too?"

"Mmm ... .this place is alive. We should be careful." Lu Zhen replied.

"Yeah." Leng Pan replied, then the water serpent that had followed them into the room, as if feeling Leng Pan’s feelings and understanding her thoughts, shrank to a small size and squeezed itself under the door using the almost non-existent gap there.

It lay on the floor outside the door as if guarding the room.

As if reading Leng Pan’s thoughts.

Click.

A soft sound echoed throughout the corridor outside.

Every head in the room turned towards the door and everyone held their breath.

Click click click.

Footsteps followed.

They weren’t draggy like zombies, neither were they staggering.

It was clearly someone walking with measured footsteps.

They stopped outside the door of the lounge.

Leng Pan could feel the smaller version of her water serpent moving, as if to attack, but she used her energy to hold it down.

She wanted to know what was happening first.

A calm, emotionless voice spoke through the door.

"Unauthorized personnel detected. Please identify yourselves."

The temperature in the room dropped sharply regardless of the rising sun outside the building.

"Lu Zhen, Commander of Liberation Survivor Base. May I know who you are?" Lu Zhen stepped forward and answered before Leng Pan could introduce herself.

He didn’t want her to put herself in danger since they knew nothing about whoever was on the other side.

Before anyone could react, a panel opened from the wall and someone, or something stepped inside.

So much for being on guard. They were guarding against someone coming in through the door, but this one came through the wall.

The figure could be mistaken for a human as it was built exactly like a human being and wore a lab coat like an ordinary researcher.

Except, its face was too stiff and its eyes too glassy.

No normal human being would have that kind of facial stiffness even those suffering from facial paralysis.
