Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 365: Night Crawlers
As everyone worked quickly to take whatever their hands touched and shove them into their bags, Janna suddenly froze.
"Sister Panpan, there is something moving towards us.
Some are above us and others from the southern direction." She said in what was almost a whisper, as if scared of startling those creatures.
"Can you tell what it is?" Leng Pan asked.
"No, it doesn’t fit the color scheme of humans, zombies, or aliens. It’s not even a mutated animal. I don’t know what it is. Everyone is grey." Janna replied after closing her eyes as if to examine the map in her head some more.
"Alright. Don’t strain yourself. Let’s move quickly before they arrive. We can use them as a whetstone." Leng Pan didn’t want to scare the team, so she just downplayed the issue. But deep inside she was wondering if another type of species had been born or was it deliberately created?
She still had a specimen of something created in a lab that wasn’t human or alien. And was certainly not an animal.
Everyone deliberately increased the speed of their movement, putting things in the huge bags they had brought.
Some had already filled two bags and we’re helping others do the same.
"They are here." Janna suddenly said.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and hurriedly closed their bags.
"Get into formation and get ready to fight." Leng Pan ordered.
Those with superpowers covered those without as they stood in formation.
Some of the superpower users had weapons in hand, the same as the ordinary survivors while others didn’t have anything, like Leng Pan and Lu Zhen.
Their abilities allowed them to create their own weapons. So, even the tang swords they had bought and carried before had become useless as their superpowers advanced and became stable.
Just as the team members tensed, scratching sounds came from above them as if something was tearing through the cracks on the ceiling.
Before they could register what was happening, something fell to the floor with a thud.
It was an unrecognizable mass that started twisting into shape as soon as it landed.
Soon, something that resembled a zombie, but was walking on all fours like an animal stood in the middle of the store, staring straight at them.
It raised its head and screeched. A sound that was neither a zombie growl nor an animal’s cry. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
It was a monster that seemed to have been human at some point but its spine had been elongated to the point that it couldn’t stand straight anymore and had to bend its back.
The sound it produced made everyone there feel as if something was stirring their brains and they wanted to scratch them out.
Leng Pan realized that it was a mental attack.
"Everyone, cover your ears and..." before she could finish her sentence, she felt movement from the door.
More of those creatures had appeared and were moving step by step towards them.
Leng Pan realized that they would be surrounded soon and looked at Lu Zhen.
"Shoot them with fire. Don’t make it too hot." She said solemnly.
Lu Zhen did as he was told and used a version of his ability that he hadn’t used before. Ordinary fire.
He had been using the mutated fire from the start and had never tried using ordinary fire even though he knew he had the ability.
But today, he used ordinary fire to try and burn those creatures.
A sizzling sound was heard for a few seconds before it quietened down.
Looking at the monsters, they seemed to be covered in wet liquid, as if water had been poured on them to put out the fire Lu Zhen had set.
"Fall back. Everyone, the opposite direction." Leng Pan commanded.
All the team members picked up their bags and swung their weapons at the monsters as they fought their way out.
The monsters screeched loudly and several people including Janna, Xu Man, and a few others stumbled and almost collapsed clutching their heads.
Leng Pan exchanged a glance with Lu Zhen, who turned around to give assistant Yao an order.
Then almost everyone clutched their heads as they fought out of the supermarket.
Luckily, they hadn’t brought the elders for that day’s mission.
Since it was the first mission after the extreme cold, they wanted to scout first.
The team managed to escape after killing a few of those monsters and retreated in the opposite direction of their base.
During the commotion, Lu Zhen used his ordinary fire to create a wall that isolated any prying eyes, giving Leng Pan a second to store two of the bodies of those monsters in her space bangle.
Since they didn’t know what they were, they would study them.
Those things couldn’t be burnt by fire and could launch mental attacks. It was better to understand what was happening.
As they moved further, Lu Zhen used his ordinary fire to set a blaze the dead monsters and this time, they were burnt to a crisp.
This led them to understand that even though those monsters were transformed from zombies, they could be considered to be ’alive’.
When they were ’alive’, they were resistant to fire, but once dead, they didn’t have any power to resist.
As they retreated further, Leng Pan felt as if she was finally free. This made her confirm her earlier guess. Someone, or something was watching them in the dark.
"Sister-in-law, why didn’t you let us fight and kill those monsters? We could have obviously killed all of them within minutes.
Why did you have us pretend to be in pain and escape?" Lu Tao asked as soon as the team retreated to an abandoned building about two kilometers away from their site of the fight.
The others looked curiously at Leng Pan. They also wanted to know the answer to that question.
When Lu Zhen spoke to Assistant Yao, he had asked him to have most of them pretend to be having a splitting headache and clutch their heads as they escaped.
