Revenge of the Phoenix Beauty-Chapter 27: Growing gazes
Chapter 27: Growing gazes
In the capital of Jin dynasty, a man's fingers were tightening around a parchment. His expression was cold, his frustration was clear.
"The illness was supposed to weaken their empire, not strengthen a mere merchant company," he muttered. "Whoever is behind this... they are too well-prepared."
Another figure stood nearby. "We underestimated them," the voice said. "Whoever this merchant company belongs to, they acted before the illness could even spread. They knew of it, I'm sure."
Silence filled the room.
Then, the first man exhaled sharply. "We must find out who it is."
"But... we can't be direct," the other reminded.
He grabbed a fresh scroll and began writing.
'To His Highness, the Second Prince of Wei. A curious matter has come to our attention. It seems there is a merchant company in your empire that has benefitted greatly from the recent illness. We wonder, who is behind such foresight? Perhaps Your Highness would be interested in uncovering this mystery?'
The message was carefully worded, nothing to raise suspicion, only curiosity. With a stamp, he neatly folded that scroll.
"Deliver this immediately," the man ordered. "And make sure it doesn't raise his suspicion."

At the Second Prince's Palace, Wei Chen was pacing with his expression dark. His mood had been foul for days.
First, Hua Qingyan continued to ignore him as if he was nothing. No matter what gifts he sent, she remained indifferent. Then, the illness spread faster than he expected, throwing the entire empire into chaos.
A servant stepped forward, bowing low. "Your Highness, a message from Jin."
Wei Chen took the scroll and broke the seal. His eyes scanned the parchment, and his face frowned.
"A merchant company...?" he murmured. He had heard rumors, but he hadn't thought much of it before.
But if the people of Jin were curious, that meant this company was more than just lucky. Someone had planned for this. Someone had acted before the illness spread.
His grip on the parchment tightened.
"Investigate this," he ordered. "I want to know everything about this merchant company. Who runs it, who funds it, and how they predicted this illness, each and everything about this merchant company."
Two figures in dark clothing stepped forward from the shadows, bowing silently.
"Find them," Wei Chen commanded. "And do not fail."
The spies went back into the night, leaving Wei Chen alone with his thoughts.
For the first time, his mind shifted away from Hua Qingyan's coldness.
"Just who is behind this company?"
