Chapter 97: Chapter 97 Are You Inviting Me?

Surprise?

More like a scare.

When it came to Cui Hao’s blatant nonsense, Xue Yang wouldn’t believe a single punctuation mark of it.

"Be sure to use protection."

"Thanks, Dad," Cui Hao said excitedly. Then he moved closer to Xue Yang, rubbing his thumb and index finger together. "Um, Dad, can I borrow a bit more? Just one thousand yuan, the last thousand, I swear. After this, I’ll never borrow again. Please, if you don’t lend it to me, I’ll have to sell my kidney."

Xue Yang delivered a precise counter, "Your kidney probably wouldn’t fetch any money."

"That’s all the more reason you should lend me the money! Otherwise, I might really die this time. Dad, can you bear to watch your precious son die?"

It had to be said that Cui Hao was truly thick-skinned. He would say just about anything to borrow money.

"This is the last time!" Xue Yang said sternly.

"The last time, I promise!" Cui Hao declared.

Sighing, Xue Yang took out his wallet and handed him a thousand yuan.

Only someone as kind-hearted as Xue Yang would help out and lend money so readily.

Cui Hao fawningly rubbed against Xue Yang’s shoulder as he took the money. "Thanks, Dad!"

Suddenly, he sniffed around Xue Yang like a puppy.

Xue Yang frowned. "What are you doing?"

"Dad, I just noticed that you smell really good."

Before Xue Yang could get angry, Cui Hao grabbed the money and bolted.

At that moment, Xue Yang really did seem like a long-suffering father, and Cui Hao was the troublesome son he was stuck with.

Shaking his head helplessly, Xue Yang turned his focus back to typing on his keyboard.

After getting the money, Cui Hao immediately took out his phone to call Sun Yufei.

"Feifei, I’ve booked the room. I’ll see you tonight; don’t stand me up."

It sounded quite lively on Sun Yufei’s end. She asked, "Is Xue Yang coming?"

"Oh, him? I mentioned it to him. He said he might come over if he finishes his work."

"Alright, then. See you tonight."

With that, she hung up.

I did ask Xue Yang, and he said he wouldn’t go. So technically, I’m not lying, am I? Cui Hao thought.

He then headed back to his dorm to dig out his sharpest outfit for the occasion.

By evening, Auntie Shen brought Lin Xi to the hotel.

"Alright, Auntie Shen, you’ve said plenty on the way here. I know what to do." Lin Xi gently pushed Auntie Shen out of the room. "You can go back now. I’ll be fine on my own."

Even though the Lin Corporation had already withdrawn her missing person notice, Lin Xi still habitually bundled herself up to avoid being recognized.

"Okay, I’ll be going then. Please be careful, Miss," Auntie Shen said.

"Go on, go on!" 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Lin Xi never realized Auntie Shen could be so long-winded.

After Auntie Shen left, Lin Xi closed the room door. She first took a moment to familiarize herself with the surroundings before walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling window.

The hotel room was on the 20th floor, and from there, she could see the entirety of Yanbei University. Lin Xi tried to see if she could spot Xue Yang, but it was undoubtedly an impossible task. The hotel didn’t have a telescope, and from this high up, trying to find one person in a place as vast as Yanbei was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Still, just being this close to him was a wonderful feeling.

When it was almost time, Lin Xi took out her phone and sent a message to Xue Yang: "Xue Yang, when are you heading back?"

Xue Yang, who was busy typing, heard his phone chime. He picked it up and saw the message was from Lin Xi, and his expression softened. He glanced at the time—it was nearly midnight, about the same as last night—and replied, "Getting ready now."

Upon receiving his message, Lin Xi immediately put on her coat, hat, and mask, making sure she wouldn’t be recognized. She then opened the door and stepped out of her room.

As she walked, she continued to text him.

Lin Xi: "Let me guess, which school gate do you usually use to catch a ride?"

Xue Yang replied while packing his things, "I’m guessing the North Gate."

The North Gate? Lin Xi had done her research before coming. The North Gate had the heaviest traffic flow, so if you were heading home late, it offered the best chance of catching a taxi. That was why Auntie Shen had chosen the Shanshui Dragon City Hotel. It was so close to the North Gate that the university entrance was almost visible from the hotel.

Lin Xi took the elevator and quickly arrived on the ground floor. With New Year’s Day approaching, shops had launched a new round of promotions. Combined with the high foot traffic around the North Gate, many late-night food stalls were still bustling with business, even as midnight drew near.

The snow had stopped after Christmas. Although patches of it remained on the ground, it wasn’t deep. Wearing thick, non-slip snow boots, Lin Xi walked cheerfully toward the North Gate of Yanbei University.

She moved like an elf in the night, quickly drawing the attention of passersby, who wondered where this lively, adorable sprite had come from and where she was going.

With his long legs, Xue Yang quickly reached the North Gate. He stood at his usual spot, preparing to hail a taxi, when his phone rang. It was Lin Xi.

He smiled slightly and answered the call.

"Xue Yang," came Lin Xi’s soft, sweet voice from the phone.

"I’m about to head back now. Just wait a little longer; I’ll be home soon," he said, keeping an eye out for passing taxis.

"Xue Yang, guess where I am?"

"I guess someone’s at home, waiting miserably for my return."

"Haha, you guessed wrong!"

"Where are you then?" Xue Yang asked, puzzled.

"Xue Yang, what direction do you think Polaris usually appears in?"

"The north."

"Then take a look to the north."

Following her words, Xue Yang turned to face north. There, he saw a little elf waving playfully at him.

"Xue Yang, I’m here!" Lin Xi pointed excitedly toward the North Star above them. "Look, that’s Polaris. Isn’t it bright?"

Xue Yang didn’t look at the star. His gaze was fixed on Lin Xi. "Yes. It’s certainly bright, and very beautiful."

He strode over, pulled the little elf into a hug, and inhaled her unique scent. "Why are you here?"

"I booked a room at the Shanshui Dragon City Hotel across the street."

Xue Yang chuckled. "Are you inviting me?"

"Well, do you accept the invitation?"

"Of course!"

They looked at each other and smiled.

Xue Yang took her small hand. "Since you’re here, want to take a stroll around my university? I heard that touching our school gate before the college entrance exam increases your chances of getting in."

"Really? That sounds so magical! I definitely have to try it."

Xue Yang led Lin Xi to the legendary gate. It was a classical and elegant archway-style gate made of green brick and white columns, featuring three arches. Carved on the lintel were the large characters for "Yanbei Garden," an inscription written in 1900 by the first chairman of the Lin Corporation, Lin Zhanghai.

It was one of Yanbei University’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Yanbei itself. The very same gate was printed on the acceptance letter Xue Yang had received.
